Islamabad, Jul 14: Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam have spent their first night in the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi and the two VIP convicts were provided "B" class facilities, media reports said today, a day after their arrest.

The National Accountability Bureau officials took Sharif, 68, and Maryam, 44, into custody in the Avenfield case, shortly after their arrival at Lahore airport from London via Abu Dhabi. They were flown to Islamabad on a special aircraft and then were taken to the Adiala Jail in separate armoured personnel carriers escorted by police convoys.

The authorities, according to new plan, have decided to keep the former prime minister and his daughter in the Adiala jail in the garrison city where they have been provided 'B' class facilities, The News reported.

According to a notification issued by the Islamabad administration, they have declared a rest house at the Sihala Police Training College in the capital as a sub-jail to keep the two figures, with immediate effect and until further orders.

However, Geo News quoting sources reported that authorities have decided to keep them at the Adiala Jail for now.

A team of doctors, in the presence of Islamabad magistrate and senior police officials at Adiala jail, conducted the medical examination of Sharif and his daughter Maryam and declared them fit.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Law and Justice has issued a new notification, saying that the accountability court would conduct trial of remaining two corruption cases, which include Flagship Investments and Al Azizia Steel Mills, against Sharif and others at the Adiala jail.

Accountability Court-Islamabad Judge Muhammad Bashir, who last night issued warrants for the imprisonment of the three-time premier and his political heir, will conduct the trial against the Sharifs in the jail, the report said.

As per the rules class 'B' consists of prisoners who by social status, education or habit of life have been accustomed to a superior mode of living. Habitual prisoners can be included in this class by order of the government, the News reported.

It is learnt that usually A or B class prisoners are educated and give lessons to the uneducated prisoners perhaps in Class C. They do not do hard labour and can be engaged in useful work which is defined as rigorous punishment in their case.

The room of class A and B prisoners are usually equipped with: one cot, one chair, one teapot, one lantern if there is no electric light, a shelf, and necessary washing and sanitary appliances.

The expenses of facilities to prisoners under A or B class such as TV, air-conditioner, fridge, and newspapers are usually paid by prisoners with the permission of jail department, the report added.

Both Sharif and Maryam have been sentenced by an accountability court to 10 and 7 years in prison respectively.

Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court last year in the Panama Papers case.

Sharif has been one of the country's leading politicians for most of the past 30 years. He remains popular, especially in Punjab, the most populous and electorally significant province.

Islamabad, Jun 27 :  Pakistan's former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was today barred by an election tribunal from contesting the July 25 general elections from Rawalpindi, a day after he was allowed to run for a seat from capital Islamabad.

Abbasi had filed nominations for NA-53 Islamabad and NA-57 Rawalpindi. Initially, the election officials had rejected his nomination from Islamabad but accepted his bid from Rawalpindi.

He had challenged his rejection from the capital in a special election tribunal of the Islamabad High Court, where his plea was accepted by judge Mohsin Akhtar Kayani yesterday.

His rival candidate from NA-57 (Murree in Rawalpindi), Masood Abbasi had challenged his candidature in another tribunal led by judge Ibadur Rehman Lodhi.

Masood had accused the former premier of tampering with the nomination papers and illegally occupying forest land in his native Murree city near Islamabad, among others.

Justice Lodhi upheld some of the objections against the former prime minister while his lawyer argued that Abbasi's nomination papers were same as the one filed for the NA-53 constituency in Islamabad, which had been already accepted, according to court officials.

Abbasi, who was appointed as premier after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court in July last year, can now appeal in a three-member bench of the Lahore High Court against the tribunal's decision.

Meanwhile, Justice Kayani today accepted the nomination papers of Pakistan-Tehreek-i-Insaaf chief Imran Khan from NA-53 (Islamabad) constituency, against former premier Abbasi.

Khan's nomination papers were rejected by the Returning Officer, following which he had filed an appeal in the election tribunal.

Also, Khan's candidacy from NA-35 (Bannu) was also approved today after his nomination papers were challenged in the Peshawar appellate tribunal.

Khan has filed five nominations -- from NA-53 (Islamabad), NA-35 (Bannu), NA-95 (Mianwali), NA-131 (Lahore) and NA-243 (Karachi) constituencies.     PTI

Rawalpindi, Aug 31: A special anti-terrorism court is all set to announce verdict in the Benazir Bhutto murder case in Rawalpindi’s Adiyala Jail today. The verdict comes after nine years, eight months and three days of the assassination. According to a report in "The Express Tribune" today, Benzair Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, had been assassinated in a gun-and-bomb attack in Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007. At least 23 PPP workers had also died in the incident. Special anti-terrorism court judge Muhammad Asghar Khan would announce the judgement under strict security arrangements. Seven men had been held accused in the murder case, including two police officials responsible for the breach of security at Liaquat Bagh. Five of the accused allegedly belong to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. During the course of the proceedings, seven challans of the case were presented and eight judges and three courts were changed. Lawyers of the accused and the prosecutor completed their arguments yesterday after which the judge reserved judgment in the case. Rao Abdul Raheem and Raja Ghanim Aaber, counsels for two accused, said that DNA samples had been sent to the laboratory for forensic tests, but they never received the test report. They said it was still a mystery why the report was not received. And if it was received, where it disappeared, they said, expressing surprise. Calling it a major lacuna in the case, they said doctors had mentioned the cause of BB’s death in their report after her medical examination and x-rays; and after that, the post-mortem examination had become unnecessary. The counsel for CPO Saud Aziz, Ghanim Aaber, said that security staff of the slain PM had clearly been told that the situation was not safe and that she should avoid exposing herself out of the bullet-proof vehicle, but the police instructions were not followed. He acknowledged that on July 15, a dispatch had been sent to all district officers and the police, stating that the situation was critical and the life of the former prime minister was at risk and she should be provided fool-proof security. “Steps were taken in this regard.” A suicide attack had already been mounted at Karsaz in Karachi but the CPO or the SPO was not nominated as the accused. “Under a conspiracy, the crime scene was washed [soon] after all the evidence was acquired. If the CPO had made a phone call to remove someone, why was the data of that call not presented? This did not happen. This is just an assumption. The security arrangement was in place. It was also wrong to assert that Commander of the Elite Force Azmat Dogar was not produced as a witness,” he said. Naseer Tanoli, the counsel for accused Aitizaz Shah, said that his client had been arrested a month before his arrest was recorded. He is blamed to have known the conspiracy before it was executed, he said. “This is wrong. The police recovered a Tasbeeh, a litre bottle and some cash from him. No arms or anything prohibited was recovered from his possession,” he said. Defence counsel Rao Raheem said that there were discrepancies regarding the name of the suicide attacker. According to the US forensic DNA report, pieces of the attacker’s body and blood seemed to be of African, European and South Western descent as if he was not a Pakistani while the prosecution holds him to be Pakistani. “The whole case is a compilation of controversies. Innocent people are being used as scapegoats to avoid exposing the real culprits. Innocent people must be freed honourably,” he requested. Prosecutors Chaudhry Azhar and Khawja Imtiaz contended that all solid evidence should have been presented. Top police officials also agreed that the security cover of the former prime minister was removed. The police report also mentioned the security lapse. The case of accused Pervez Musharraf was detached because of his absence and it would resume after his return. Accused CPO Saud Aziz and SP Khurram Shehzad were also present in the court, According to "The Express Tribune" report. UNI
