Islamabad, Jun 27 : Pakistan's former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was today barred by an election tribunal from contesting the July 25 general elections from Rawalpindi, a day after he was allowed to run for a seat from capital Islamabad.
Abbasi had filed nominations for NA-53 Islamabad and NA-57 Rawalpindi. Initially, the election officials had rejected his nomination from Islamabad but accepted his bid from Rawalpindi.
He had challenged his rejection from the capital in a special election tribunal of the Islamabad High Court, where his plea was accepted by judge Mohsin Akhtar Kayani yesterday.
His rival candidate from NA-57 (Murree in Rawalpindi), Masood Abbasi had challenged his candidature in another tribunal led by judge Ibadur Rehman Lodhi.
Masood had accused the former premier of tampering with the nomination papers and illegally occupying forest land in his native Murree city near Islamabad, among others.
Justice Lodhi upheld some of the objections against the former prime minister while his lawyer argued that Abbasi's nomination papers were same as the one filed for the NA-53 constituency in Islamabad, which had been already accepted, according to court officials.
Abbasi, who was appointed as premier after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court in July last year, can now appeal in a three-member bench of the Lahore High Court against the tribunal's decision.
Meanwhile, Justice Kayani today accepted the nomination papers of Pakistan-Tehreek-i-Insaaf chief Imran Khan from NA-53 (Islamabad) constituency, against former premier Abbasi.
Khan's nomination papers were rejected by the Returning Officer, following which he had filed an appeal in the election tribunal.
Also, Khan's candidacy from NA-35 (Bannu) was also approved today after his nomination papers were challenged in the Peshawar appellate tribunal.
Khan has filed five nominations -- from NA-53 (Islamabad), NA-35 (Bannu), NA-95 (Mianwali), NA-131 (Lahore) and NA-243 (Karachi) constituencies. PTI
Islamabad, Mar 24: Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said that if Nawaz Sharif was
jailed, he would lead Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) from behind bars,
The Express Tribune report said.
In an interview with a private media outlet, PM Abbasi said
that rumours and speculations of Nawaz being jailed were based on assumptions,
but that even if the former premier was to go there, he would regulate and
decide on PML-N’s policies from there.
“He controlled and ran the party during the reign of Pervez
Musharraf as well, people have won elections while in prison,” he said.
He further added such decisions will not stop Nawaz’s
political career or involvement in politics, “neither did his political career
end during the army’s reign, neither will it diminish now.” UNI
Islamabad, Feb 24: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said that Pakistan was the land of
saints and not the terrorists, a Saturday report in the Dunya News said.
Mr Abbasi was addressing a ceremony in
connection with Lahore Literary Festival at the Governor House in Lahore on
Friday evening.
The Prime Minister said, Pakistan’s face,
portrayed by the western media was wrong, adding local cultural heritage and
saints’ teachings were in fact the real face.
Noted and internationally acclaimed writers,
intellectuals, scholars and foreign dignatories were present on the occasion.
Prime Minister said, Lahore Literary Festival
would help promote tolerance in the society and the foreign delegates coming
from various countries would carry back the message of love.
Welcoming the foreign dignitaries to Pakistan,
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said, it provided an opportunity for sharing ideas and
thoughts. He expressed the optimism that delegates would enjoy the festival and
play a key role in presenting soft image of Pakistan abroad upon returning to
their respective countries.

Jehangir said, she besides people’s rights, fought for strengthening democracy
and its survival.

Jan 17: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has ruled out action against
Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, saying that there is no case registered
against him in Pakistan.
"Action is taken when there is a case registered
[against someone]," he said during a Geo News programme.
He also said the Gwadar port, the starting point of the China
Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is being used for commercial purposes and
alleged that India has been waging a propaganda against the multi-billion
dollar project.
Recently there were reports that China is looking to open a
naval base in Gwadar to supplement its already existing Indian Ocean facility
at Djibouti.
"Gwadar is a commercial port and it is being used for
commercial purposes," he said.
On Afghanistan, Abbasi said the country has to solve its
problems, noting that Pakistan can only be a facilitator.
"We want Afghanistan to resolve its issues; no outsider
would come to solve their problems," he said,
adding that re-settling three million Afghan nationals is
important.
Abbasi said that around 60-70 thousand people come and go
using the Pak-Afghan border on daily basis.
About relations with the US, he said a dialogue with the US

Islamabad, Jan 17: Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has ruled out the prospects of war
with India and said both the countries should avoid escalation.
Pakistan has never indulged in unilateral actions and always
stood for dialogue but it should be based on respect and without compromising
on the core issue Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Abbasi said responding to a question in
an interview with a private television channel here.
When asked about Indian Army chief's recent statement about
Pakistan, the Prime Minister said India might have several objectives, but it
should realise the situation along the Line of Control, a report in Radio
Pakistan said on Wednesday.
Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat had said that the force
was ready to call Pakistan's 'nuclear bluff' and cross the border to carry out
any operation if asked by the government.
He urged the world to help in repatriation of about three
million Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
PML-N will contest the next general election in July 2018 on
the plank of its five-year best performance and unprecedented development work,

Oct 30: Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said that there
was no rift among the national institutions and a perfect sense of
understanding prevailed between the political and military leaders. Talking to
newsmen after his arrival at Heathrow Airport here, the Prime Minister said he
neither believed in conspiracy theories, nor there was any room for those in
the country. "Such notions of rift among national institutions were only
seen in TV channels or newspapers," he said. He said both political and
military leaders were sitting together during the recent meeting with the US
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Islamabad and all of the country’s
institutions were collectively playing their role for national development, he
added, according to a Samaa report. To a question, he said he had no proposal
for holding general elections before completion of the current tenure. UNI
