Surat, Feb 2 :  Police on Sunday seized over 500 kg ganja from a godown near Kudsad village in Gujarat's Surat district and arrested one person, an official said.

The godown is located in an industrial area, he said, adding that the operation was carried out by the Local Crime Branch and Special Operations Group.

The value of the seizure is estimated to be more than Rs 50 lakh, he said.

As per preliminary investigation, the consignment of ganja was smuggled from Odisha and was supposed to be supplied to customers in Surat and other cities.

It can be recalled that the police had seized around 18 kg ganja from the same village around three months ago and arrested one person.

Surat, Jul 21: A woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the ninth floor of the district court building in Athwalines locality here today, police said.

The woman was identified as Shilpi Lalchand Singh (27), they said.

"The woman allegedly ended her life by jumping off the ninth floor of the district court building, where she had come for a hearing of a domestic violence case she had lodged against her husband," Assistant Commissioner of Police Pinakin Parmar said.

She had lodged the complaint at Limbayat police station and the matter was being heard in the court, he said.

The woman's body was taken to the new civil hospital for post-mortem, Parmar said adding that further investigation was on. (PTI)

Surat, Dec 1: Taking BJP President Amit Shah head-on, Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief Raj Babbar on Friday trained his guns on him said Mr Shah 'calls himself a Hindu but he is a Jain'. 
Talking to reporters here, Mr Babbar said, 'Amit Shah calls himself a Hindu, but he is a Jain. As far as Rahul Gandhi is concerned, Shiv Bhakti is being practised in his home for a long time. Indira Gandhi used to wear rudraksha, which was only worn by those who worship Shiva.' Mr Babbar also spoke on Rahul Gandhi's 'non-Hindu' controversy and said, "As far as Rahul Gandhi is concerned, Shiv Bhakti is being practiced in his home since a long time." He also said, 'Religion is a matter of faith and belief but unfortunately the BJP is distributing the certificates.' After addressing a gathering in Narmada district’s Kewadia, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani who
himself is Jain, said, 'Mr Babbar’s comment is full of ill-informed. It is frustration of the Congress being losing the election. He has no knowledge that Mr Shah is a Hindu Bania.' UNI

Surat, Gujarat, Nov 29: Sholay' film scenes were recreated here during an election campaign by enthusiast Congress workers on Tuesday in endorsement to Rahul Gandhi's jibe - 'Gabbar Singh Tax', but the 'Gabbar Singh' here preferred to flee the spot.
'Gabbar Singh' came on horseback with 'GST' inscribed on his belt boldly and the irreplaceable Thakur (with hands chopped off) walked along the streets in pensive mood.
And there were many others in the campaign drama even displaying guns.
According to sources, Samba and Kaalia were played by Congress workers Krunal Mori and Ashwin Patel.
But the law and order agencies could not allow something like that go on -- as the rally was brought out without police permission.
Umar Sheikh, a vegetable vendor, who played 'Gabbar Singh' later said, "when I saw police coming, I escaped with the horses'.
Five youth Congress members, including Surat Municipal Corporation Congress councillor Aslam Cyclewala, were arrested on the charge of rioting.
Police have taken exception to the display of guns saying this created fear among people and hence - they say -the process of law has to get underway. UNI

Ahmedabad/Surat, Nov 27: The top BJP leaders seem to be eyeing to make 'terrorism' a subject matter of debate in the run up to the crucial elections in Gujarat as both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday - almost sharing similar sentiments - tried to rake up the terror bogey.
On a day, Prime Minister said in his monthly radio programme 'Mann-Ki-Baat' that terrorism has taken an 'ugly shape' and has emerged as a global threat, Mr Jaitley, also a former Defence Minister, tried to drive home the point that the Modi government has able to fight terror elements in Jammu and Kashmir especially by making use of measures like demonetisation that 'squeezed' fund flow for the anti-national forces. Political observers in Gujarat point out that strong anti-terror stance has been always a forte for the saffron party in the state especially on the eve of elections. In 2002, Mr Modi himself made a repeated reference to 'Mia-Musharraf' (when Gen Pervez Musharraf was in power) to castigate Pakistan for its support to terrorism.
In 2007 also - terror elements and measures to fight it had figured prominently in the form of controversy pertaining to 'Sohrabuddin encounter. In fact, the issue only boomeranged on Congress when Sonia Gandhi made the now infamous jibe 'Maut-ka-saudagar (Merchant of Death)' against the BJP leadership. "On November 8 last year, we introduced note ban and it had a major impact. Those who used to distribute money to stone pelters are not able to gather even 100 youth to pelt stones in the past eight to 10 months after  demonetisation," Mr Jaitely said in Surat on Sunday after listening to Prime Minister's 'Mann Ki Baat' speech. For his part, Mr Jaitley said concerted effort must be made globally to fight the menace of terrorism. Mr Jaitley further has said: "Our biggest problem is Kashmir. Narendrabhai government inherited a situation where there was a civil disobedience- like situation three years ago. Thousands of stone pelters would gather to protest against stray incidents. Terrorists would mount attacks with impunity and Hurriyat leaders could close down the valley with one call. 
Today, the situation has changed. The person who becomes the commander of Lashkar knows he will be alive for two to three months. The intelligence network has been strengthened right down to the village level". In Rajkot on Sunday immediately after Prime Minister's 'Mann-Ki-Baat' speech, a Patel housewife in University Road area lauded the central government for what she said "taking tough and befitting measures" to fight terrorism. "As a Patidar, I may feel aggrieved against BJP on reservation issue. But when it comes to nationalism and fighting terrorism, I have no choice, but to back the Modi-led dispensation," remarked Snigdha Patel. UNI
