Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 5: Kannur International Airport, the second greenfield airport set up under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, near Mattannur in Kannur district would be inaugurated on December 9.
The date for inauguration was fixed as the Director General of Civil Aviation has accorded commercial flight operation licence to the airport, a release from the office of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Friday.
The airport built in an area of 2,300 acres has all modern passenger amenities.
At present the length of the runway is 3,050 metres and work to extend the length of the runway to 4,000 metres had already began, it was stated.
The airport would have 24 check-in counters, self-baggage drop counters, self-checking machines and 32 immigration counters.
Work on seven aerobridges has been completed and the airport has arrangements to facilitate landing of big aircraft like Boeing-777. It has space to park 20 aircraft at a time.
The Kannur airport will be the fourth international airport in the state, the others being in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.
Kannur airport is the second to be built under PPP route after Nedumbassery International Airport at Kochi.
It is only 20 km away from Kannur city, and 2 km from Mattannur on Kannur Mattannur Mysuru road.
Construction of the airport, considered a flagship programme of the previous Congress-led UDF government, was inaugurated by then Defence Minister and senior Congress leader A K Antony on February 2, 2014.
Among the objectives of the airport include transforming the North Malabar region into a highly developed growth centre for travel, tourism and industries. (PTI)
Kasaragod(Ker), Jul 27: Senior IUML leader and former Kerala Minister, Cherkallam Abdullah, passed away after a prolonged illness.
He was 76 and was undergoing treatment for heart ailment.
The Muslim League leader had been admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru since the past two weeks and was discharged last night.
The end came at his home this morning, party sources said.
Abdullah, a prominent leader of the Opposition Congress-led UDF in north Kerala, is survived by wife, two sons and two daughters.
A four-time MLA from Manjeswaram in Kasaragod district, Abdullah was the local self development minister in the A K Antony cabinet from 2001-2004.
Condoling his death, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Abdullah who had represented Manjeswaram four times since 1987, was at the forefront in taking up development projects for Kasaragod district.
Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Ramesh Chennithala, IUML leader, P K Kunhalikutty, MP, UDF convenor, P P Thankachan, were among those who condoled his death. (PTI)
Kottayam (Ker), Jun 8: Kerala Congress (M) tonight decided to field its leader Jose K Mani as the candidate of the Congress-led UDF for the Rajya Sabha election.
The decision to field Mani as candidate to the Upper House of Parliament was taken at the leaders' meeting of the KC(M) held tonight in Pala near here, hours after the party led by veteran leader K M Mani rejoined the UDF after a two-year hiatus.
Jose K Mani, son of K M Mani, is currently the party's lone member in Lok Sabha from Kottayam parliamentary constituency.
Jose K Mani will be the party's candidate for the Rajya Sabha poll. It is a unanimous decision," senior leader P J Joseph told reporters in Pala after the meeting.
Earlier in the day, KC (M) announced its decision to return to the UDF fold, after the Congress decided to support its candidate for the Rajya Sabha election.
The seat is currently held by Rajya Sabha deputy chairman P J Kurian of the Congress who will retire on July 1.
The KC(M) had walked out of the Congress-led UDF in August, 2016, ending over three-decade-long association alleging it was being "insulted" by the party leading the alliance.
After it snapped ties with the Congress nearly two years ago, the KC(M) has maintained that it was keeping equidistance from the UDF, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front, as also the BJP, which is trying to create a sustainable political space for itself in the southern state. (PTI)
