Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 5: Kannur International Airport, the second greenfield airport set up under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, near Mattannur in Kannur district would be inaugurated on December 9.

The date for inauguration was fixed as the Director General of Civil Aviation has accorded commercial flight operation licence to the airport, a release from the office of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Friday.

The airport built in an area of 2,300 acres has all modern passenger amenities.

At present the length of the runway is 3,050 metres and work to extend the length of the runway to 4,000 metres had already began, it was stated.

The airport would have 24 check-in counters, self-baggage drop counters, self-checking machines and 32 immigration counters.

Work on seven aerobridges has been completed and the airport has arrangements to facilitate landing of big aircraft like Boeing-777. It has space to park 20 aircraft at a time.

The Kannur airport will be the fourth international airport in the state, the others being in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.

Kannur airport is the second to be built under PPP route after Nedumbassery International Airport at Kochi.

It is only 20 km away from Kannur city, and 2 km from Mattannur on Kannur Mattannur Mysuru road.

Construction of the airport, considered a flagship programme of the previous Congress-led UDF government, was inaugurated by then Defence Minister and senior Congress leader A K Antony on February 2, 2014.

Among the objectives of the airport include transforming the North Malabar region into a highly developed growth centre for travel, tourism and industries. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jun 23 : Kannur International Airport will begin operations in September, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said today after meeting Union Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu.

Kannur aerodome will become the fourth international one in Kerala, which is already the state with the most number of international airports in the country.

Vijayan said Prabhu has assured that issues regarding the operations of foreign airlines at the airport would be sorted out and that the issues would be discussed with the overseas carriers.

Addressing a press meet on the achievements of the Left Democratic Front government, which completed two years last month, Vijayan also said the meeting with Prabhu was fruitful.

Last month, the Union Home Ministry sanctioned deployment of over 600 CISF personnel at the airport, spread over 2,330 acres.

Vijayan said feasibility study is under way for setting up an airport at Aranmula in the southern district of Pathanamthitta. The district is known for the hilltop shrine Sabarimala which attracts lakhs of pilgrims every year.

We also discussed development plans for Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode airports. Chairman of the Airports Authority of India will visit Kerala to study issues related to these airports, he said.

Vijayan said AAI will conduct inspections as part of the expansion plans of these airports.

Land is necessary for development. Since we are short of land, AAI will inspect whether they can make any adjustments with their demands for expansion, he said.

About achievements in the two years, Vijayan said his government is trying to build a corruption-free and secular society.

Kerala is a small state in India. We have to implement welfare policies while staying within the country's federal system, he said.

The globalisation-based liberalisation and privatisation policies adopted by the Centre in this regard do not aid in the overall development of the society.

Hence, our government has focused on developing an alternative policy. Our experience in this regard indicates that we have been successful in our efforts. We have been able to record several achievements in various fields.

We need to maintain these achievements, Vijayan said.

The chief minister also said the main impediments for Kerala's development are seen in core industries like agriculture.

We have given much importance to remedy such issues. To boost industry and production, we need to develop core infrastructure like roads, ports etc, he added.

In an hour-long press meet, he said the government has many achievements in the last two years.

As per the United Nations report, the state tops in the Human Development Index in the country. We also bagged the award for the state with the best law and order situation. We have also developed policies for the protection of elderly citizens. Kerala also has a clear-cut transgender policy, he said.

Vijayan also said Kerala is the state with the highest minimum wages and is the least corrupt compared to other states.

We are an open defecation-free state. We also achieved total electrification in all houses unlike other states which claim total electrification even when they give electricity to any part of a village, he said.  PTI

Kannur(Ker), Jun 7: In an atonement against the Kathua gang rape, noted Malayalam writer and Sahitiya Akademi award winner, K P Ramanunni, today performed a symbolic 'Sayana Pradakshinam' (prostration) at a temple in nearby Chirakkal today.
This was a penance against the brutal rape and murder of the 8-year-old muslim girl inside a temple at Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir in January this year, the writer said.
The girl was allegedly raped by six men who had held her in captivity in a small temple village for a week.
She was allegedly drugged so that she could be sexually assaulted again before being bludgeoned to death, according to police.
Yuva Morcha activists had gathered at the Sree Krishna temple in large numbers to prevent him from performing the 'sayana pradakshinam.'
But Ramanunni, took a dip in the temple pond and performed the symbolic ritual.
He later told reporters that prayers can be held not only for personal matters, but also for social issues.
Yuva Morcha said the writer's act was only a 'political stunt.'
The Kerala Samskritha Sangham (KSS) organised the programme.
Ramanunni's novel 'Daivathinte Pusthakam,' which is about his concerns in a world dominated by communal hatred and stresses for humanity beyond all boundaries, had won him the Sahitya Akademi Award last year.
The progressive writer had donated the prize money of Rs one lakh to the family of Junaid, the teenaged boy who was killed on a train in Haryana by an angry mob.
His first novel 'Sufi Paranja Katha' had won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1995. (PTI)

Kannur, Mar 13: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Panchayat unit president T Santhosh suffered stab injuries in an alleged attack by a three-member CPI(M) gang on Monday night. 
In a protest against the attack, a dawn-to-dusk hartal was being observed by the BJP district committee in Muzhappilangad Panchayat on Tuesday.
Police said 50-year-old Santhosh, an auto rickshaw driver, was attacked by the gang at Kettu near Muzhappilangad. He was admitted to the Thalassery Indira Gandhi Cooperative hospital. The gang led by Rahul of Muzhappilangad attacked him with swords and iron rods, when Santhosh was on the way to this house on a bicycle last night. 
Meanwhile, CPI(M) Muzhappilangad local committee denied its role in the attack. Edakkad police registered a case.
In another incident, the car of BJP State council member C V Vijayan at Mattanur, parked at his house, was came into attack by miscreants at the wee hours on Tuesday. UNI

Kannur, Dec 26: Two CPI(M) cadres, including a Homeopathic doctor, suffered serious stab injuries in an attack, allegedly by BJP/RSS workers at Ayalur near Mattanur on Monday night.
CPI(M) has called a dawn-to-dusk hartal at two municipalities Mattanur and Iritty and four Panchayaths-- Thilankery, Maloor, Koodali and Keezallur areas on Tuesday to protest against the attack 
However, it allowed plying of vehicles and exempted the essential services from the 'hartal'. A protest march will also be carried out at Mattanur town to protest against the attack.
According to police, the CPI(M) workers were identified as Sudheer (48), who is also a professional homeo doctor and son of former Mattanur Municipal Chairman K T Chandran ,while another worker Sreejith (32), son of Damodharan and brother of CPI(M) Ayalur ward member Sreeja. 
The attack occurred around 2230 hrs on Monday, when both of them were sitting at a bus shelter near the party office at Ayalur. 
Six BJP workers came in a car and attacked them with sharp-edged weapons, injuring them seriously. Locals residents rushed them to a near by hospital and later, shifted to a private hospital at Kozhikode.
Large number of police personnel were camping at Mattanur and nearby areas following the series of political clashes and now the situation is under control, police said. UNI

Kannur, Oct 14: Kerala Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala today said the Communist Party of India (Marxist) should say who is its main enemy at the national level. The Congress leader said this as the CPI(M) top leaders meet in Delhi. Chennithala said the CPI(M) has so far failed to decide which party--BJP or Congress--is the main enemy at the national level and the polit bureau should clarify this. Talking to news persons at a press conference here, Mr Chennithala said in CPI(M) National Secretary Sitaram Yechury's opinion BJP is the main opponent while the Kerala unit of the party has been saying the Congress is the main opponent. He alleged that the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Forum government's 'allegations' against Congress leaders following the Solar Scam commission report is helping the BJP to divert people's attention from the allegations that BJP Chief Amit Shah's son Jay Shah benefited after the party came to power at the Centre. Mr Chennithala also alleged that there is an 'unholy nexus' between the CPI(M) and BJP in Kerala which is strengthening the BJP in the state. The state’s ruling Left Front government has ordered an investigation into about a dozen Congress party leaders, including former Congress chief minister Oommen Chandy in what’s come to be called the solar scam. He also said the Congress will fight the cases legally and politically. He said his party is yet to receive a copy of the Solar scam commission report and would respond once it gets it. UNI

Kannur, Oct 4: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today joined Janaraksha Yatra emerging as a star attraction of the day. The UP Chief Minister landed Kannur late last night. He walked all the way from Keecheri to Puthiyatheruva this morning, during the second phase of the yatra, led by BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan. This was Mr Adityanath's maidan visit to Kerala after becoming the Chief Minister of the state. A saffron clad sanyasi leading a political yatra raised curiosity among the highly politicised people in Kannur. More than 5000 BJP workers were marching along with Mr Adityanath and Mr Kummanam shooting slogans against 'Red and Jihadi Terrors.' The march in two lines was most peaceful and orderly. Hundreds of people cutting across the political side gathered on both sides of the road to greet the yatra. In this evening, the yatra will continue from Puthiyatheruvu to Kannur with Mr Adityanath and Kummanam at its helm. The yatra was against CPM atrocities against RSS and BJP workers in Kerala. UNI

Kannur, Oct 3: BJP National President Amit Shah offered prayers at famous Rajarajeswarai temple near Thaliparamba on Tuesday. Mr Shah reached at Mangalore Airport at 0130 hrs this morning and drove straight to Green Park Hotel in Kannur. He was here to flag off Janaraksha Yatra led by Kerala BJP President Kummanam Rajasekharan aiming to create awareness against 'jihadi terror' and CPM-sponsored 'red terror' in the state. Mr Shah would inaugurate a photo exhibition depicting 'the atrocities against BJP and other parivar activists by Jihadis and Communists at Payyanur town square at 1045 hrs.' After flagging off the yatra, the BJP president will meet the family members of Balidanis at town square. Later, Mr Shah will have lunch with BJP leaders and workers. At 1500 hrs Mr Shah will take part in the nine km-long padayathra from Payyanur Gandhi park to Pilathara town. UNI

Kannur, Sept 28: Indian National League State president Syed Alavi Puthiyavalappil, popularly known as S A Puthiyavalappil, died due to cardiac arrest at his own house at Thalassery in the early hours. INL is one of the ally of Left Democratic Front. He was 72 and survived by wife Aysha and four children, including two sons. The funeral function will be held at Odathil mosque near Thalassery in this evening. The body was shifted to his ancestral house at Thalassery so that people can pay last respects. He was the INL state president since 2004 and also served as the General Secretary during 1998. He was contested for INL from Koothuparamba constituency as LDF candidate in 2011 assembly election, but lost to K P Mohanan of Socialist Janatha (Democratic), an ally of UDF for just 3,303 votes. His father CKP Cheriya Mamukoya, who was also a Indian Union Muslim League leader, S A Puthiya Valapil, also served as the MSF, state general secretary in 1963. He also served as the chairman on Cheruvannur steels and the vice chairman of the governing body of Sir Syed College at Thaliparamba. UNI
