Rameswaram, July 27 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate steps to secure the release of 79 fishermen and 149 boats arrested and detained by the Sri Lankan Navy. Speaking at a public meeting after Mr Modi dedicated to the Nation “Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam National Memorial” here, he said thanks to the concrete steps taken by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, a total of 2,664 fishermen and 357 boats were released by the Lankan government. Thanking the Prime Minister for this on behalf of the fishing community and on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu, Mr Palaniswami highlighted the sufferings of the fishermen and appealed to him to take steps to secure the release of 75 fishermen and 149 boats immediately. 'On behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu in General and the fishermen in particular, I request the Prime Minister to kindly use your good office to persuade the Sri Lankan Government to release all the 75 Tamil Nadu Fisherman and 149 fishing boats apprehended by them', he added.
