New Delhi, Jul 17 : As follow up of the observations made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a recent Mann-Ki-Baat programme that he should not be gifted bouquet and instead given a book or a single flower, the Union Home Ministry has issued an instruction to this effect. "I am directed to state that it has been desired by the competent authority that no bouquet may be presented to the Prime Minister during his tours within India," a notice from Union Home Ministry said, according to sources. A flower along with a 'khadi handkerchief' or a book may be presented to welcome the dignitary, sources said. A few states have already received the instructions from the Union Home Ministry. According to Home Ministry official, states and union territories have been asked to suitably "sensitise all concerned" to ensure compliance of the instructions. During his 'Mann ki Baat' programme over All India Radio last month, Prime Minister Modi had said people should gift useful materials like books or handkerchief rather than (flower) bouquets. "We should gift Khadi handkerchieves as it will help poor artisans, and books so that people are inspired to get into the habit of reading," PM Modi has said in his popular radio broadcast programme on June 25. "When I was in Gujarat, I had set this tradition of welcoming, by not giving bouquets, but books or handkerchiefs instead. And that too, a ‘Khadi’ handkerchief, so that it promotes ‘Khadi’. Till the time I was in Gujarat, this habit had been ingrained in us, but after coming here, I had lost that habit," he had said. Pitching strongly for gifting books -- a somewhat vanishing trait in recent years -- Mr Modi had also said, "....when you present a book, it becomes a part of the household, a part of the family".
