Hyderabad, Jul 27:  Union Minister for Food Processing Industries, Harsimrat Kaur Badal today said that though the country is amongst the largest producers of food in the world but only 10 per cent of the country’s food produce is processed due to lack of processing facilities, infrastructure and technology. Ms Badal said that the food processing industry holds tremendous potential to grow in India in view of the very low level of processing at present. While addressing a road show of ‘World Food India 2017’ to be held in New Delhi from November 3 to 5, here, Ms Badal said, India is not only food surplus country but largest producer of many of the agriculture products but still facing problems of farmers distress and wastage of food. India needs a fresh breath of everything from post harvest management technology, cold chain infrastructure and refrigerated transport to processed produce and brands, the Minister said the world Food India strives to attract the world’s best food processing companies and give them a golden opportunity to harvest growth and reap profits from the world’s fastest growing economy. In the last three years, the government under the leadership of Narendra Modi, has taken revolutionary steps to address these issues of farmer’s distress and reducing wastage by taking giant steps in correct direction so that quantum difference would be achieved improving the life of the farmers, she added. In this sector only, the government had allowed 100 per cent FDI, the Minister informed. While ascertaining that the food sector is on roll, the Minister also stated that the Kisan Sampada Yojana for which Prime Minister has allocated Rs 6000 corers would transform the lives of farmers. The objective of the scheme is to give thrust to development of food processing sector, augment capacity through technology infusion, linking farmers, processors and markets, to create robust supply chain infrastructure for perishables, development of agro processing clusters and to promote skill development, R&D and quality assurance, said Ms Badal. Ms Badal also appealed to the captains of the food processing sector, all the state governments to participate in the ‘World Food India 2017’ in a big way.UNI
