Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao

Hyderabad, Jan 25 :  Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday said the state assembly may pass a resolution against the new law like some other states did recently.

Rao said he has already spoken to many of his counterparts in other states and he may convene a conclave of regional parties and Chief Ministers here to oppose the CAA since it concerns the country's future.

The TRS is secular by its policy and nature and it had opposed the CAA, he told reporters here.

The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi had voted against the amendment to citizenship law in Parliament last month.

"I have already spoken to many chief ministers on this. I spoke to leaders of other parties also.

Probably, maybe, in the next one month, I may arrange a conclave of regional parties and CMs in Hyderabad to oppose this....100 per cent. Because, this concerns the future of the country. This is not good for India, where 130 crore (people) live," Rao said.

After Kerala and Punjab, Rajasthan became the third state to pass a resolution against the CAA on Saturday.

Hyderabad, Jun 29 :  Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu Saturday said the country does not need any lessons from others, as it is the most secular one in the world even as religious freedom is a fundamental right guaranteed under the Constitution.

"Please remember that culture is a way of life and religion is a way of worship. Accordingly, I have the honour of asserting that India is a country built on the foundations of a civilisation that is fundamentally tolerant," he said.

In India, religious freedom is a fundamental right guaranteed under Articles 25 to 28 of the Constitution, he said.

"We do not need any lessons from anybody. Some countries of late have started giving us 'pravachans' (sermons), forgetting what is happening back in their own countries. If at all, you have to grade number one, the most secular country in the world, is Indian civilization, India, that is Bharat, our motherland," he said.

Naidu was speaking at the Graduation Day-2019 of Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology here.

Last week, the US state department, in its annual 2018 International Religious Freedom Report, had alleged that "mob attacks by violent extremist Hindu groups against minority communities, particularly Muslims, continued in India in 2018 amid rumours that victims had traded or killed cows for beef".

It evoked a sharp reaction from the ruling BJP, which said it shows a clear bias against the Modi government.

Making his point, Naidu quoted the Indian concept of 'sarva dharma sama bhavana, which means respect for each others religion.

The Preamble of the Constitution declares the country as secular so as to guarantee every citizen equality without any discrimination based on religion, though our country is predominantly Hindu, he said.

India is the birthplace of four major religions of the world Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism and significant population of three other religions of the world - Islam, Christianity and Zoroastrianism - live in India, he said.

In fact, Indian Muslims constitute the third largest Muslim population in the world, he said.

In an apparent reference to incidents of lynching, he said some may happen here and there in a country of 135 crore people.

But such incidents should be 'localised' and action taken against those responsible for them, instead of branding the entire country as if things are going wrong, he said.

"In spite of languages, in spite of so many religions, in spite of different political parties, we are able to live together with peace and trust. There may be some isolated incidents here and there. They have to be isolated. They have to insulated. They have to be condemned and action has to be taken against those people..." he said.

Equality of religions as observed in all walks of life have enabled leaders from minority religions rise to hold the offices of President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Governors, Chief Justices, Chief Election Commissioners and Army Chiefs, besides making major contributions in other walks of life like music, culture, sports and films, Naidu said.

Certain "aberrations like looking at minorities as vote banks" may have had some undesirable socio-political ramifications, but the situation is changing as a new, young and aspirational India is emerging fast, he said.

The motto of Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas Sabka Vishwas has its roots in the core principles of Indian civilisation, he said.

"We believe in an inclusive India, wherein every citizen has the same entitlements, irrespective of his or her religious leanings," he said.

All through the ages, Indian philosophers and rulers and the modern political leadership have expounded and upheld the principles of equality and tolerance, he said.

"The world can rest assured that India celebrates its religious diversity by upholding religious freedom. No other country matches India in respect of such diversity and the commitment to preserve such a colourful mosaic," Naidu said.

He deprecated discrimination based on caste, religion and gender and called for a bringing about a change in attitudes.

On incidents of rapes and other crimes against women and children, he said a change of mindset, not just laws, was required.

He also emphasised on achieving academic excellence.

"None of the Indian universities are there in the top 100 of the world. Why, is a question all of us should put to ourselves," he said.

Hyderabad, June 13:  AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi Thursday hit out at the NDA government over "record" unemployment of youth in the country, retail inflation reaching a six-month high and other allegedly negative development parameters.

"Record youth unemployment - Auto industry 'temporarily' shutting down production Inflation at 7 month high 50% of India facing drought-like situation Rural income growth in negative But Sensex is at 40,000! Kiska saath, Kiska vishwas?," he tweeted.

Owaisi, Lok Sabha member from Hyderabad, is a bitter critic of the BJP and NDA government.

His remarks "Kiska saath, Kiska vishwas" is a reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent comments, adding 'sabka vishwas' to the slogan of his first government 'sabka saath, sabka vikas     [Agencies]

Hyderabad, Mar 1 :  Mahendra Singh Dhoni had an injury scare during the Indian team's net session on the eve of the ODI series opener against Australia here Saturday.

Dhoni sustained an injury on his right forearm while taking throwdowns from team's support staff member Raghavendra.

The former India captain had a long batting session at the nets and like all first team players was taking throwdowns after the formal session.

It was one such delivery from Raghavendra that kicked up and Dhoni was hit on the right forearm.

The veteran was in some pain and didn't bat after that as a precautionary measure.

Whether the injury is serious enough to make him doubtful for the opening ODI couldn't be ascertained. A final call is expected to be taken by the evening.

In case Dhoni is unavailable, then Rishabh Pant is expected to don the big gloves. That is the most likely option in case Dhoni fails to get fit in time.

If the team management is keen on checking all the fringe batting options, then KL Rahul and Ambati Rayudu could both play in the XI with Rahul keeping.

India are aiming to bounce back in the five-match ODI series after losing both the T20s.                              [Agencies]

Investigation was on to trace the jawan, they added.

The CRPF personnel were coming to their Group Centre at Hakimpet, Secunderabad, the sources said.                [Agencies]

Hyderabad, Feb 21 :  The Congress has gone well beyond whatever it has done in the past to reach out to opposition parties and bring them together to take on BJP-led NDA in the Lok Sabha elections, says senior party leader Salman Khurshid.

The former union minister also said Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's recent entry into active politics has energised the Congress 'troops' ahead of the Lok Sabha elections due by May and the party workers' enthusiasm is very high.

He said the time is running out for the Congress to seal seat-sharing pacts, but added the party had been working fairly tirelessly to conclude such talks within a specific time schedule.

"I think we have gone well beyond whatever we have done any time in the past, we are doing everything that's possible. There are some contradictions that are difficult to handle, so let's see what happens," Khurshid told PTI in an interview Wednesday.

Asked if there is still hope the Congress can go together with Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh for the polls -- the two parties had excluded the Rahul Gandhi-led oufit in seat-sharing deal --, he said his party is proceeding on the assumption that it has to be on its own.

"But I understand there is a whisper that... may be there will be rethinking in all the parties (BSP, SP and Congress) and there may be something possible. But frankly I have no firm indication of any such thing. We seem to be preparing to be on our own. But our President (Rahul Gandhi) has taken a fairly soft position, saying repeatedly that we are willing to cooperate and we will cooperate and our objectives are common (to defeat the BJP). Beyond that it's a bit difficult to say right now," he said.

Khurshid said the immediate impact of Priyanka's entry into active politics is already being felt. "The enthusiasm of the (Congress) worker is certainly very high".

"She has energised the troops as it were", he said on the party's new General Secretary in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

"We still have an election to fight and there is lot of hard work up ahead, and it's almost certain that her entry at this time will have a significant impact," Khurshid said.

On the perception in some quarters that Priyanka may overshadow her brother, he was dismissive.

"They work very well together; they have been working for sometime. They have a very, very important personal bond between them. I think the timing and the decision (of her entry into politics) just as much as hers as it was Rahul Gandhi's," Khurshid added.                    [Agencies]

Hyderabad, Feb 21 :  The executive committee of consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has decided to seek permission from the Bar Council of India to allow full-time faculty to practise law in courts.

The decision, among others, was taken by the committee at a meeting here Wednesday, a press release fromthe Nalsar University of Law here said Thursday.

Also, the committee resolved that the issue would be taken up with the Bar Council of India seeking an amendment to its Rule 49 which prohibits full-time salaried employees from practising in courts.

The committee said that not allowing law teachers to practise in the courts of law was 'harming' the legal system as law teachers are as important stakeholders in the system as lawyers and judges and can contribute meaningfully to the legal system, the press release said.

Besides, the committee said that as the country badly needs litigation lawyers and also needs to bridge the gap between law in books and law in action, it is necessary that the teachers should themselves go to the court along with the students.

Vice-chancellor of Nalsar varsity and president of consortium of NLUs professor Faizan Mustafa said the executive committee resolved that in case law teachers are not permitted to practise, a non-practising allowance of 25 per cent at par with medical doctors should be paid, according to the release.

Once the law teachers were permitted to take up the cases, it would be on a pro-bono basis and if a fee was charged, it would be shared between the university concerned and the law teacher in the ratio of 60:40, the release said.                          [Agencies]

TLC Chairman K Swamy Goud Wednesay disqualified K Yadava Reddy, R Bhoopathi Reddy and S Ramulu Naik as members of the upper house of legislature.

Separate bulletins have been issued by the secretary to the state legislature on their disqualification.

The ruling TRS had complained to the Chairman against the members seeking their disqualification for allegedly working against the party in the Assembly polls and also joining the Congress.

Hyderabad, Dec 14 : The Army is taking efforts to compile data on war veterans who suffered disability so as to provide them support, including prosthetic limbs in needed cases, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said Friday.

Gen. Rawat, here to attend the Convocation Ceremony at the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), said the aim was also to motive the disabled soldiers that disability does not mean they cannot do anything.

"What we are doing is, firstly we are identifying these people. There are disabled soldiers some of them are in the village. Some are elsewhere. Some got disabled in the 1965 war. Some in the 1971 war. They are now very, very old. So, the idea is to first identify and see how their condition is," he told reporters here.

He was replying to a question on the Army's plans to extend the support system to soldiers who suffered disability in the line of duty.

Gen Rawat said the Army was looking at compiling data on the present condition of the veterans.

"And once we have compiled the data... then we have to work out the kind of support we have to give them... It is not just monthly support, and some people need prosthetic limbs," he said.

The army was now providing very good artificial limbs and artificial systems which can help the affected lead a near-normal life, he said.

Noting that there were two distinct types of people who get disabled while serving the army, the General said some, who lost parts like an eye or a hand, need support of family members and there were others who were disabled because of service conditions, stress and even lifestyle diseases, but can take care of themselves.

Hence, there should be distinct support for the two types of disabled persons.

Earlier, Rawat, in his convocation address, said the graduating officers need to harness latest technologies.

"As technology refines and research throws open new vistas, your challenge would be to harness the latest technologies for the benefit of our great Indian Army," he said.

He also said future battle space would be dominated by guided missiles, Artificial Intelligence, unmanned platforms, robots and network-centric operations.     PTI

Congress President Rahul Gandhi has passed all "leadership tests", and would emerge as the Prime Minister after the next Lok Sabha elections, senior party leader M Veerappa Moily claimed Wednesday.

Hyderabad, Dec 12 (PTI) Congress President Rahul Gandhi has passed all "leadership tests", and would emerge as the Prime Minister after the next Lok Sabha elections, senior party leader M Veerappa Moily claimed Wednesday.

A resurgent Congress Tuesday made significant gains in the Assembly elections, dealing a body blow to the BJP in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan and emerged as the single largest party in Madhya Pradesh.

BSP chief Mayawati Wednesday said her party will extend support to the Congress to form the government in Madhya Pradesh and keep the BJP out of power. She also said that if the need arises, the BSP will also support the Congress in Rajasthan to form the next government.

"People have tolerated too long the misgovernance and the misrule of (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi and his NDA government. And this (results of elections to state assemblies) is an indication that they are totally unhappy with him," the former union minister told PTI.

"And the manner in which they (BJP) have carried on certain personal propaganda against Soniaji and Rahulji... people are not tolerating. This is the success not only of the Congress party but also of the (party) leadership," he said.

The elections to state assemblies, the results of which were declared Tuesday, were a big test of leadership of Rahul Gandhi, the former Karnataka Chief Minister said.

"...that means to say May 2019 onwards Rahul Gandhi will emerge as the leader of the country and also as Prime Minister."

He praised Gandhi for the manner in which he was working with "this kind of hardship, perseverance and patience" and said it has really paid dividends in the elections to the assemblies.

"He (Gandhi) has passed all the tests which was posed to him to become a leader," Moily claimed.

"People definitely see that he is a much better leader than Narendra Modi".

Gandhi, he said, has also been successful in mobilising all the forces against Modi. "This (poll to the assemblies) is quite a manifestation of the combination of all the opposition parties against Narendra Modi and NDA," Moily said.

Hyderabad, Dec 11 : TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao Tuesday dedicated the emphatic victory of his party to the people of the state and said the election results would enable it to play a crucial role in national politics.

"We dedicate this victory to the people of Telangana.

This is a positive vote for us," Rao, who is set to return as chief minister for a second term, told a press conference.

The Telangan Rashtra Samithi has secured a two-thirds majority, winning 81 seats out of the total 119 as per the latest vote count in the assembly elections.

The TRS was leading in six others, leaving the others way behind.

According to results and trends available at 5 pm, the Congress won 15 seats and was leading in four while ally TDP bagged two seats.

"We are going to play a very crucial role in the national politics...and we will show...we will give a new definition to the national political scenario," he said, as TRS workers broke into celebrations.

"Today's results...Telangana has shown the way to the whole nation. Today, Telangana stands (as) a non-Congress,non-BJP state," Rao added.

Rao has been one of the votaries of a broad-based non-BJP and non-Congress federal front, and the win would further fortify his position as a regional satrap.

According to results and trends available at 5 pm, the Congress won 15 seats and was leading in four while ally TDP bagged two seats.  PTI

Hyderabad, Oct 15 (PTI) Political parties are divided over the BJP's proposal in its yet-to-be-released election manifesto to restrict sale of liquor in Telangana.

"How can I comment on somebody else's manifesto?" a senior Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader responded when asked for his party's view on the matter.

Another TRS leader noted that the BJP was yet to officially release the manifesto and added that the party may comment after it's actually unveiled.

A key Congress functionary said he welcomed the proposal on a personal level but pointed to revenue collection implications for the State.

"This government has taken the revenue from liquor sales from Rs 8,000 crore per annum to Rs 20,000 crore in the last four and half years.

If liquor sales are curbed, it will hurt the State economy, draining its resources to a significant extent," he said.

The CPI National General Secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy was dismissive about the BJP's proposal.

"They are not going to come to power any way. What's the purpose of making such a statement. These are empty statements like their national manifesto like 15 lakh rupees for each family promised by Narendra Modi," Reddy told PTI.

The BJP won five seats in the 2014 Assembly elections in alliance with the TDP, which emerged victorious in 15 constituencies.

This time, the BJP is going it alone in the December seven polls for the 119-member Assembly.

The BJP has proposed in its election manifesto, which is in the works, to regulate the sale of liquor, claiming that its unrestricted availability and consumption was leading to several social and law and order problems in the state.

The proposal is to restrict the sale of liquor to five days a week.

"Sale of liquor will be regulated to five days only..

Every day, timings will be maintained.. After 6 (PM), no wine shop or bar will be open," BJP's manifesto committee chairman N V S S Prabhakar had said.

The TRS government in Telangana and the governments in undivided Andhra Pradesh have seen sale of liquor only as a source of income, Prabhakar, who was MLA in the recently dissolved Telangana Legislative Assembly, alleged.

The consumption of liquor is leading to various problems, including atrocities against women, suicides and law and order problems, Prabhakar claimed.

Hyderabad, Oct 13 (PTI) Young Prithvi Shaw blazed his way to a half-century after Umesh Yadav's six-wicket haul as India raced to 80 for one at lunch on the second day of the second Test here Friday.

At the break, Shaw was batting on 52 off 42 balls with eight fours and a six, and had Cheteshwar Pujara for company.

West Indies were all out for 311 in their first innings, adding only 16 runs to their overnight total, as Yadav recorded a career-best figures of six for 88, polishing off the tail in only 6.4 overs in the morning.

Roston Chase (106 off 189 balls), however, deservedly completed his fourth Test hundred before the innings wrapped up.

When the Indian innings started, it was all about how comfortable Shaw looked against Shannon Gabriel and Jason Holder, as he completed his half-century in only 39 balls.

He started by using Gabriel's pace to hit a couple of boundaries. The first was guided past gully and the next was slashed hard over third-man for a six. When Holder pitched up, he played a lovely cover drive and an off-drive.

As Shaw scored with ease, his opening partner K L Rahul (4) looked like a player, who has currently lost all his confidence. Against the same bowlers he struggled and his miseries ended when he played on against Holder.

The only blemish on Shaw's part before he reached his half-century was a dropped catch off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican. Shai Hope, at first slip, dropped it as Shaw tried to play a cut.

Before that he did hit Warrican over deep mid-wicket for a one-bounce four.

In the morning, Umesh surpassed his previous best figures of five for 93 recorded during a 2011 Test match at the Perth, as he removed Devendra Bishoo, Chase and Gabriel in quick succession to reach his individual milestone.

Hyderabad, Oct 12 (PTI) Indian spinners went off the boil in the final session as all-rounder Roston Chase hit a gutsy unbeaten 98 to take the West Indies to a respectable 295 for seven on the opening day of the second Test, here on Friday.

Chase, who scored 137 to deny India a victory in a Test match in Jamaica back in 2016, showed the much-needed application with requisite technique as Indian bowlers struggled after polishing off the top half for only 113 runs.

Chase, along with skipper Jason Holder (52), did enough to ensure that the West Indies will have a good first innings total to fight against a heavyweight Indian batting line-up.

Not being able to dismiss the middle and lower-order was a problem in England and it once again turned out to be the bowling unit's bane as the Chase-Holder duo added 104 runs for the seventh wicket.

In England, it was the pacers, here it was the spinners and only one wicket fell for 102 runs in last session.

Nonetheless, Umesh Yadav (3/83 in 23 overs) bowled his heart out on a good batting track while left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav (3/74 in 26 overs) was also impressive during the first two sessions.

Debutant pacer Shardul Thakur left the field complaining of groin strain after bowling merely 10 deliveries and the Indian attack was reduced to four men.

It seemed good enough till tea time but the lack of a fifth bowler did have its effect in the final session as the two senior spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (1/49 in 24.2 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (0/69 in 20 overs) lacked a Plan B to dismiss a set Chase.

That Jadeja didn't even have a Plan A was evident as he bowled flat out but wasn't even restrictive like Ashwin.

Prior to the match, when Chase was asked about doing a Jamaica encore, he replied: "Anything is possible."

He walked the talk and read the pitch better compared to his top-order colleagues.

He understood that it was a flat track and played most deliveries on the front-foot to meet the ball early. When the spinners fired in the faster ones, he was quick to lean on his backfoot.

In all, he hit seven boundaries and a six during his 174-ball knock.

However, it was India, who had started the post-lunch session on a dominant note with signs that another batting debacle from the Caribbeans looking imminent.

Shimron Hetmeyer (12) offered no stroke to a googly and was adjudged plumb in-front. Sunil Ambris (18) played a loose shot as the Caribbeans were left stuttering at 113 for five.

Chase and Shane Dowrich (30) then added 69 runs for the sixth wicket before Umesh got the ball to reverse trapping the keeper leg-before. While the umpire initially gave not out, skipper Virat Kohli had a successful DRS review.

Earlier, Ashwin and Yadav struck early in the session as West Indies lost their top-order in the first session in which they scored 86 runs.

At the stroke of lunch, Shai Hope (36) was dismissed by Yadav as India gained the upper-hand.

Opener Powell, who scored 83 in the second innings at Rajkot in the first Test, struck four boundaries. He successfully reviewed a leg-before call off Ashwin's delivery as TV replays showed a big inside edge.

But Powell did not survive long as Ashwin flighted one and the batsman, trying the inside-out lofted drive, failed to get the elevation to be caught by Ravindra Jadeja at cover.

Powell's opening partner Brathwaite showed better application compared to the first Test as he was ready to dig in his heels and defend doggedly.

However, not scoring runs did put pressure as he looked clearly uncomfortable at not being able to pick Kuldeep's wrist-spinners.

In fact, he was facing problems with Kuldeep's incoming delivery -- the stock ball for a chinaman.

One such delivery ended his 68-ball vigil with a delivery that spun sharply into Brathwaite as the batsman played to a wrong line.

Youngsters Hope and Shimron Hetmeyer (10 batting), however, batted with grit, punishing the odd loose balls for boundary.

Both were ready to defend Ashwin off the front-foot primarily and it worked to their advantage as they added 34 runs for the third wicket.

The stand-out shots of the first session were a couple of back-foot punches by Hope off Umesh Yadav's bowling.

Hyderabad, Oct 11 : Rishabh Pant on Thursday earned a maiden call-up to the Indian ODI team, replacing Dinesh Karthik for the first two games against the West Indies.

The wicketkeeper-batsman's call-up was on expected lines after he impressed in his debut Test series against England before scoring an entertaining 92 in the first Test against the West Indies in Rajkot.

Captain Virat Kohli, who was rested for the Asia Cup last month, returns to lead the side.

The five-match series begins in Guwahati on October 21.

Squad (for first two ODIs): Virat Kohli (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu, Manish Pandey, MS Dhoni (wicket-keeper),Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Khaleel Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, KL Rahul.     PTI

Hyderabad, Oct 10 (PTI) Mahendra Singh Dhoni's poor batting form might force selectors to include the flamboyant Rishabh Pant when they pick the ODI squad for the limited-overs leg of the ongoing home series against the West Indies, here Thursday.

It is still not clear whether the squad will be announced for the first three games or the entire series, which comprises five ODIs and three T20 Internationals and starts on October 21.

Skipper Virat Kohli's presence may be another key issue even though it's unlikely that he will be inclined to rest for the entire series.

However, the primary bone of contention will be whether the selectors and the team management will at least agree on having a cover batsman for Dhoni, whose wicketkeeping remains sharp but batting form has been on the slide.

"We all know that Dhoni will play till the World Cup but there is no harm in grooming Pant, who could be a terrific No.6 or 7 batsman, who has the ability to finish games," a senior BCCI official privy to selection matters told PTI today.

Since his debut Test hundred at the Oval followed by a stroke-filled 92 in Rajkot, calls for the 20-year-old's inclusion have only grown louder.

While Dinesh Karthik is already there, his consistency and inability to finish matches at crucial junctures will keep the team management worried.

There are a few other permutations that the selectors might consider.

Kedar Jadhav's dodgy hamstring will rule him out of the limited-overs leg which opens up one potential middle-order batting slot.

Ambati Rayudu, after a good Asia Cup performance, will retain his place even if Kohli decides to play.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah are set to come back after a much-needed break during the ongoing Test series.

Ravindra Jadeja is also expected to make it after his lion-hearted show as Axar Patel's replacement.

The axe might just fall on Manish Pandey, who has had a poor run of late since getting a chance against Afghanistan.

Hyderabad, Oct 8: India need not take an aggressive position in public on the issue of US sanctions on nations defying its directive to bring their oil imports from Iran to zero by November 4, says a former Indian diplomat.

India has to play a cautious role, in that priority should be the country's national interests, former Ambassador of India to Saudi Arabia Oman and the UAE Talmiz Ahmad said.

"India's national interests lie in maintaining relations with Iran while at the same time not totally alienating the United States", he told.

"And what India will do and I think that's the correct policy that there will be some reduction in oil imports for a short period and at the same time discussions with the United States will continue in order to ensure that the US policy becomes more accommodative", Ahmad said.

He was of the view that over a period of time or as early as six months, the entire sanctions regime would "collapse".

"My own view is that we don't need to take an aggressive position in public but constantly subserve our own interests and wait for that time when the United States' absurd policy is revised by the international community or the US itself," he said.

Ahmad said this had to be done quietly without going public and ensuring the country's interests was safeguarded.

According to him, there would be some reduction in oil purchases from Iran in the short term but it's not likely to continue for a longer period.

Hyderabad, Oct 3: Retired Supreme Court judge N Santosh Hegde Wednesday advised the newly appointed Chief Justice of India, Justice Ranjan Gogoi to bring in more transparency in judicial proceedings and promote solidarity between judges to avoid any "misunderstanding".

"Also, he (Justice Gogoi) should give an impression to the public that judges are one when it comes to justice," the former Solicitor General of India told.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi was Wednesday sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India (CJI). He succeeds Justice Dipak Misra.

Justice Gogoi was among the four senior-most judges who had in January criticised the then Chief Justice Dipak Misra, especially the manner of allocation of cases to certain benches.

Hegde said Justice Gogoi's primary responsibility would now be to reduce the huge pendency of cases in courts, and he was glad the new Chief Justice of India had already spoken on the issue.

Justice Gogoi said last week that he had a plan to deal with pendency of cases which has been bringing in a lot of "disrepute" to the judicial system.

He said he had a plan to deal with the backlog of cases and he would "unfold" it soon.

Hegde, also former Lokayukta of Karnataka, said, "He (Justice Gogoi) should bring more transparency in the judicial proceedings. They (Supreme Court) have already decided on videographing (live-streaming) of proceedings. That apart, misunderstanding that the judges had in the last regime, should not be repeated".

"That misunderstanding has led to a lot of scenes....

problem with people whose respect (towards Judiciary) is reducing. Once people lose respect of the judicial institution, that is end of democracy," he said.

Hegde said the CJI should take fellow judges into confidence and discuss their views so that they will also develop a confidence in him.

"Probably that lack (of such a practice) has led to some misunderstanding (during the previous regime) which has become a public issue and many things happened thereafter which should not happen," Hegde said.

"He (Justice Gogoi) should bring about transparency in judicial administration and solidarity between the judges.

Administrative solidarity should be there," he noted.
