Maharashtra, Sep 8: Marathwada has reported 50 farmer suicides in last
three weeks, according to divisional commissioner office here today. With this,
630 farmers have committed suicide in the region since January 1 as compared to
580 last year. Drought prone area, Beed registered highest number of 127
suicides cases while Hingoli the least as 33. District wise figure as follows:
100 cases in Nanded, 86 in Osmanabad, 84 in Aurangabad, 82 in Parbhani, 60 in
Latur, 58 in Jalna. Of 630, 425 cases have been found liable for compensation
as per the norms so far compensation has been provided to the next of kin of
deceased farmers by the respective district administrations. The claim in 103
cases were rejected following official inquiries made by the administrations,
and the remaining 102 cases are still pending for inquiries. The state
government has taken up several steps to including loan waving scheme of
Rs.34,000 crore to 89 lakh farmers in the state and measures to tackle the
natural calamities like drought, hailstorm and to make farmers aware about
alternatives available to them, instead of committing suicides, report added.
