Jammu, Sept 28: Hundreds of activists of Jammu and Kashmir Youth Congress, led by its state
president Pranav Shagotra, on Thursday staged a gherao at the official residence of Deputy Chief
Minister Nirmal Singh to protest against failure of the BJP leadership to
convince its coalition partner PDP to declare state holiday on the birth
anniversary of last Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh.
The Youth Congress
activists also gave vent to their anger against brutal lathicharge on female
students of Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
Youth Congress
activists, who gathered in front of the Circuit House as per their announced
programme, trooped towards residence of Deputy Chief Minister, Nirmal Singh
amid shouting of anti-BJP and anti-Nirmal Singh slogans.
Carrying placards and
banners, Youth Congress activists blocked vehicular movement on Talab Tillo
road.
Although there was
heavy deployment of force to foil attempts of Youth Congress workers' march
towards residence of Deputy Chief Minister, some of the workers even managed to
stand on the main gate of Dr Nirmal Singh's residence.
Cops scuffled with
some Youth Congress activists to restore normalcy in the area.
Speaking on the
occasion, Pradesh Youth Congress (PYC) President Pranav Shagotra
said that reason of holding protest in front of the residence of Deputy Chief
Minister was his betrayal with the people of Jammu region, who had voted to the
BJP with a hope that Saffron Party would come up to their expectations.
"Non declaration
of holiday on birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh and criminal silence of
the BJP Ministers had fully exposed the ruling alliance which had defied the
popular sentiment of Jammu only to appease separatists and forces inimical to
the nation", he said and alleged that the state holiday was being denied
at the behest of secessionist forces who had all along opposed the integration
of the state with the union of India besides questioning the legality and
authenticity of the instrument of Accession.
He said with BJP-PDP ostensibly
endorsing the separatist agenda in J&K and BJP ministers were party to it. UNI
