Agartala, Sep 16: Tripura government constituted an expert team to find out the remedial measures to manage water-logging and flash flood situation of Agartala even with moderate rainfall. The Urban Development Minister Manik Dey today admitted that there were problems with drainage system of Agartala city that caused rain waters to stand for days, which was established in five occasions in past one month and left lives out of gear. He however, claimed high intensity rainfall in this monsoon had caused tributaries and distributaries of river Haora swelled beyond usual. parts of Agartala city south of river Haora were severely hit by the flood water. Houses in north of Kathakhal canal were inundated by the flood besides, two other sewerage canals due to blockades of plastic wastes and other non-degradable items. “Moreover, because of weak solid waste management of Agartala municipal council, the people and small traders disposing wastes in the storm water drains that has been preventing flow of sewerage; ultimately inundated some low-lying areas of the city,” Dey admitted. He tried desperately to defend the failure of municipal authority and his government of unplanned growth of Agartala saying that such issues were common in bigger cities like New Delhi or Mumbai and added, “We are having 11 water suction pumps to evacuate waters from the city streets. But the excessive load caused them to work slowly too. Besides, the drains have their upper limit of drainage potential.” The minister today put up a strong defence against the accusation that covering up all drains of the city interrupted proper evacuation of flood water. If the drains were indeed clogged as some people have claimed, it would have been impossible to drain the water despite all the pumps, Dey claimed. UNI
