ANANTNAG, OCTOBER 13: The
District administration Anantnag today organized to mark the International Day
for Disaster Reduction to raise awareness on the importance of building more
disaster resilient communities and to promote risk-awareness.
Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Mohammad Younis Malik was the chief guest
on the occasion. The
function was also attended by Tehsildar (Hqr) to DC, Tehsildar Anantnag, Deputy
Controller Civil Defence & SDRF, Chief Warden and a large number of volunteers.
On the occasion, the DC said that the district is prone to multiple
disasters and concerted efforts need to be made for disaster mitigation. He
said that the unplanned settlements have, to a large extent, exacerbated the
proneness of floods because of the encroachments on the main drainage systems.
Climatic changes and other anthropogenic influences have further added to the
risk.
“The purpose of observing this day is
to sensitize the public about the capacity building methodologies that need to
be adopted to minimize the impact of any disaster,” said the
DC.
Regarding the involvement of the volunteers in the disaster management,
the DC said that block and village level committees have been constituted where
the volunteers can play a pivotal role in meeting any eventuality.
The Deputy Controller Civil Defence and Tehsildar (Hqr) to DC also spoke
on the occasion and briefed about the mechanisms being conceived so as to make
the existing system more robust and effective.
Later, a mock drill was also conducted wherein different aspects of
risk reduction and disaster mitigation activities were undertaken.
