Oct 13: The biggest convention centre in eastern India, and one of the
largest in the country, located in New Town, is going to be inaugurated by
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today. It was the Chief Minister, who had
proposed the setting up of a world- class convention centre in Bengal. She has
named it Biswa Bangla Convention Centre. Housing Infrastructure Development
Corporation (HIDCO) has implemented the project. The Bengal Global business
Summit in January 2018 is going to be held at this convention centre. The main
convention hall has a seating capacity of 3,000. Two smaller- capacity
auditoria, each with a seating capacity of 434, four large exhibition halls
including a state banquet, with a total carpet area of 17,000 square feet (sq
ft) and a 12,500-sq ft spacious pre-function area are also be located at the
centre. A garden food court will be linked to the exhibition halls. There are
extensive food and beverage facilities for conferences through provisions of
banquet kitchens and satellite kitchens at all levels. A business hotel is
located at the convention centre, comprising of 100 twin-bedded rooms, a
business centre with 10 meeting rooms, a business club covering an area of
8,000 sq ft, comprising a state-of-the-art gymnasium, billiards room and cards
room, a spa with a rooftop pool, two speciality restaurants and a 24-hour
coffee shop. The convention centre has a parking facility for 640 cars and 92
open parking and 15 bus parking facilities. The campus has been envisioned as a
‘green’ building project with all modern amenities and services like HVAC
(heating, ventilation, and air- conditioning), illumination with LED fixtures
and auto control, dual plumbing, audio-visual systems, fire detection and
suppression system, CCTV, security and surveillance, and IBMS (integrated
