3 militants killed, massive search operations on in Kupwara

Srinagar, Nov 21: Three militants were killed in a fierce encounter by security forces in the frontier district of Kupwara, where search operations were going on at two other places also on Tuesday.

Official sources said that Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Kumar Mohalla, Magam, Ananwan and Hachburg in Kupwara following a tip off about the presence of militants. All exit points in these areas were closed and search operations launched, they said. At Kumar Mohalla, Magam, Handwara, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area, the militants opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons. Security forces also retaliated and in the fierce encounter, three militants were killed. The militants are believed to be residents of Pakistan, they said, adding that the operation was still going on when the reports last came in. Search operation at Ananwan and Hachburg were also going on when the reports last came in.
