Investigation was on to trace the jawan, they added.

Kolkata, Feb 17 :  IMG Reliance Sunday pulled out from broadcasting the Pakistan Super League in protest against the Pulwama terrorist attack.

On Thursday, at least 40 CRPF paramilitary troopers were killed in a terror attack while several others are battling for their lives following what is being termed as the deadliest terrorist strike in three decades in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Due to unfortunate events a couple of days back which resulted in the death of Indian soldiers, IMG Reliance is pulling out with immediate effects, from offering broadcast production services for PSL. The incident that occured is deeply regrettable," stated a mail addressed to Sohaib Sheikh and Kamil Khan of Pakistan Cricket Board.

Being the only producers of the event, the development means PSL will go off air unless the PCB brings in an alternate production services, an official said.

The fourth edition of PSL got underway in Dubai on Thursday.

The six-team tournament is currently being held in Dubai and Sharjah before moving to Pakistan for final eight matches, including the summit clash in Karachi.                               Agencies

Lakhimpur (Assam), Feb 17 :  BJP president Amit Shah said Sunday the sacrifices of the 40 CRPF jawans, killed in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, would not go in vain as the BJP government at the Centre, unlike the erstwhile Congress dispensation, would not compromise on any security issue.

Addressing a rally here, Shah said the gruesome attack was carried out by Pakistan-backed terrorists, who would not be spared at any cost.

"This cowardly act was done by Pakistani terrorists. Their (jawans') sacrifices will not go in vain, because there is no Congress government at the Centre. It is BJP government and the Narendra Modi government will not compromise on any security issue," he added.

Slamming the opposition Congress and its former ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Shah said both the parties did nothing to implement the Assam Accord despite ruling most of the period since signing of the pact in 1985.

"We will not allow Assam to become another Kashmir. That is why we have brought NRC (National Register of Citizens). We will deport each and every infiltrator with the help of NRC. We are committed to that," he added.

On the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which the Centre failed to table in Rajya Sabha, the BJP president said misinformation were being spread as if it was only for Assam and other parts of the Northeast.

"It was not only for Northeast, but for all refugees in entire country. The way demography is changing in Assam, without the Citizenship Bill, the people of the state will be in big danger," he added.              PTI

The prime minister, who was in this north Bihar town to launch a slew of projects, began his speech with a few lines in the local dialect Angika and paid tributes to two jawans from the state who died in the Pulwama attack.

New Delhi, Feb 15 :
Warning Pakistan that it cannot weaken India by orchestrating attacks such as the one on CRPF jawans in Pulwama, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said those responsible will pay "a very heavy price" and security forces will be given a free hand to deal with terrorists.

In a hard-hitting speech, Modi said the "blood of the people is boiling" and forces behind the act of terrorism will be definitely be punished.

"Security forces have been given complete freedom, the blood of the people is boiling...Our neighbouring country, which has been isolated internationally, thinks such terror attacks can destabilise us, but their plans will not materialise," Modi said at a function to flag off the Vande Bharat Express, India's fastest train from Delhi to Varanasi.

On Thursday, an explosives laden truck rammed into a CRPF convoy in Pulwama outside Srinagar, killing 37 soldiers in one of the biggest terror attacks in recent years.

"My condolences to families of those martyred in Pulwama attack, those behind the terror strike will pay a very heavy price," Modi said.

"I am thankful to all nations which condemned Pulwama attack and urge them to come together to crush terrorism. The forces behind this act of terrorism and those responsible for it, will be definitely be punished," he said.

Appealing to his critics to not politicise the tragedy, Modi said the attacks have left the country emotional.

"I understand the sentiments of those criticising us but I urge them that it is an emotional time, so stay away from political one-upmanship," he said.

Earlier in the morning, after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said India had withdrawn Pakistan's most favoured nation status and was working on a plan to isolate the country internationally in the wake of the attacks.

"The most favoured nation status to Pakistan stands revoked," Jaitley said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh will be visiting Srinagar on Friday and would convene an all-party meeting most likely on Saturday to brief political parties on the incident so that the nation speaks in one voice on the issue.

The CCCS meet was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack.                             PTI

New Delhi, Sep 11: Concerned over suicides and stress factors claiming more lives of troops than operations, country's largest paramilitary force CRPF has launched a first-time project to ascertain the mental health of its jawans, the force chief has said.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is training a maiden batch of counsellors to check the menace in the ranks, its Director General R R Bhatnagar told in an interview.

The over 3-lakh personnel strong paramilitary, involved in three major combat theatres of counter-terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, anti-Naxal operations in Left Wing Extremism hit states and counter-insurgency in the North East, has tied up with premier institutes like AIIMS and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to ensure better work-life balance for the troops.

"If you were to look at suicide figures for the last five-six years, these numbers per lakh of force personnel have gone down. The number of suicides (in the force) to the national average for people of that age is comparable.

"Having said that, we are very concerned about the problem. We have started the administration of certain tests and questionnaires to find out the stress and depression levels of jawans as part of a pilot project," CRPF Director General (DG) R R Bhatnagar told PTI in an interview.

He said the test has been recently conducted in one of their field formation and force experts will now see the results to gauge its utility further and then implement it as a policy measure.

The CRPF chief was asked a question in the context of recent data that showed heart attacks, depression and suicides claimed 15 times more lives of troops than anti-Maoist operations during the last two years.

The data said 156 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel died due to heart attack, 38 because of depression and suicide and 435 due to other non-operational reasons last year.

Similarly, the data for 2016 revealed that 92 troops of the force died due to heart attack, 26 because of depression and suicides while 353 lost their lives due to other reasons.

The CRPF chief added that the latest questionnaire series has been prepared by a panel of experts and doctors in consultation with their in-house medical wing and they were now going through the results.

"We are checking the reliability and validation of this exercise. Then, we will make it a regular affair. We want to ensure that no life is lost due to these reasons," Bhatnagar said.

"We are taking steps, he said, to see how can we deal with it (depression) in terms of counselling and medical treatment?

"The CRPF is training some of its own people as counsellors. Till now, we used to take recourse to professional counsellors from other agencies," he said, adding the counsellors will further train more personnel so that each force unit has such skilled staff.

The 1983-batch IPS officer said he has passed directions and "made it a point that every suicide case in the force is thoroughly investigated".

"This is to see that if there were certain signals that the person who committed suicide was giving and if yes, were they picked up and responded to or not?," he said.

The DG asserted that they have found that largely the reasons behind suicide cases in the force were due to domestic or household issues and also due to the "pressures of today's modern day lives".

"We have involved the TISS, All India Institute of Medical Sciences and local institutes to find solutions so that somebody who has a psychotic issue and needs medical attention can be helped quickly. I can however tell you that the figures do not indicate it (stress related problems and suicides) is increasing," he said.

The DG said a "lot of effort" has been made in the force to address these problems and some standard operating procedures and guidelines have been framed.

"We have put stress on the 'buddy system' where one trooper is responsible for the other.

"We have asked unit and battalion commanders to frequently interact with their subordinates and their team, especially when a jawan comes back from home as that is the time many incidents of suicide take place as the person brings back some issues of home with him," Bhatnagar said.

SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 6: Sh. V.S.K Kaumudi, Additional Director General, CRPF, J&K Zone, called on Governor Satya Pal Malik, at Raj Bhavan here today.
Sh. Kaumudi briefed Governor about various matters pertaining to the functioning of the CRPF and discussed issues relating to internal security management and the Police-CRPF operational deployments in various district headquarters and vital areas. He also informed Governor about the programmes and civic action interventions launched by the CRPF in all the three regions of the State.
Governor expressed satisfaction over CRPF’s coordination developed with local police and other security agencies in handling the challenging law and order situations in J&K.
Governor lauded the role of CRPF for ensuring smooth conduct of the Shri Amarnathji Yatra-2018. Governor urged the officer that CRPF, besides ensuring the security in the respective areas must also maintain a cordial relationship with the people of the State.

Latehar (Jharkhand), Sep 4: Jawans of the CRPF have lit up over 50 households in two villages of Jharkhand's Latehar district with LED bulbs, as part of community policing efforts, an official said.

The two villages -- Karamdih and Khamikhas -- is situated on the foothills of Maoist-hit Burapahar area bordering Chhattisgarh, CRPF Second-in-Commandant Ravi Ranjan said on Monday.

As there is no electricity in the villages, the jawans installed the LED lights in 53 households with the help of a generator, he said.

The 112 Battalion of the CRPF worked continuously for 48 hours from August 17 to light up the houses, where about 100 children are now able to study in the evenings, Ranjan said.

A medical camp was set up in the area, where around 250 people underwent checkups, he said, adding, school essentials were also distributed among students, as part of the community policing drive.

New Delhi, Sep 3: A first-time concerted crackdown has been launched against 'overground' Maoist supporters in various states and about 500 such people have been apprehended by the security forces in Chhattisgarh alone over the last one year, the chief of country's lead anti-Naxal operations force, the CRPF, has said.

CRPF Director General R R Bhatnagar told in an interview that this fresh action is being undertaken by them in coordination with state police forces with an aim to deny 'space' to the Left Wing Extremists and to counter them beyond the field operations.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has deployed close to a lakh armed personnel and a heavy assortment of weapons and gadgets to tackle the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) in various states of the country.

"We are now going to the villages and we are trying to see that action is taken against their (Maoists) overground supporters and workers, 'jan militia' and other people who give them the intelligence and local support.

"We are working with the local police and we are seeing that all the people who have been identified, either 'jan militia' or are wanted in different cases, they are rounded up (by the police). More than 500 people with the help of our forces have been taken into custody in the last one year in Chattisgarh. We are trying to see that their (Naxal) overall support is also reduced," the DG told the news agency.

A senior official heading a special combat unit in Chhattisgarh later informed that all those people who have been found to have helped the Naxalite cadres in planning, aiding and executing an attack on security forces are the ones who are on their radar primarily and such persons are being tracked and apprehended or arrested as part of this new strategy to counter the LWE challenge.

Bhatnagar, a 1983-batch Indian Police Service officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, said the paramilitary force is gradually increasing its footprints into the core Naxal areas and has opened at least 15 new camps in the highly impenetrable and inhospitable jungles and terrain of south Bastar in Chhattisgarh which shares borders with Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha and Telangana.

"If you were to look at figures this year, 160 Naxals have been neutralised in various states and the number of incidents (anti-Maoist operations) are maximum in Chhattisgarh followed by Jharkhand," he said.

The CRPF boss said he has taken some major policy decisions to better orient his combat units for success in operations without suffering major reverses.

"What we have also done is hardened our defences. We have also placed emphasis that it is not only only the special forces like the CoBRA (specialised jungle warfare unit of CRPF) who have to be competent but also the GD (general duty) battalion troops who need to be properly trained as they are in the highest numbers by way of deployment and they are facing the maximum attrition," Bhatnagar said.

The officer took charge of the force in April last year in the backdrop of two major ambushes in Chhattisgarh's Sukma that claimed the lives of 37 CRPF men.

The regular battalions of the CRPF are the ones, he said, who go out every day in the same area where the threat is severe.

They actually are facing more threats than the special forces who largely go out for focussed operations and hence it has been decided to make the regular units stronger, the DG said.

"We have focussed to make our general duty battalion component very strong. We have infused the concept of young platoons, boys who are fit and well-trained and able to counter. We have also introduced a lot of young element in the Naxal theatre and in Chhattisgarh we have recently introduced about 5,000 new young recruits after their training," the officer said.

The DG said as a result of undertaking these policy and operational changes, this year during three or four severe attempts of ambush by Naxals, the force has been able to successfully "break" the killing ring without suffering any casualty and they affected injury to the attacking party.

"That has got the salutary effect for the forces," he said.

This year, the DG said emphatically, the CRPF operations and the boys are now much more confident, much more stronger and our area domination is better.

"We are also introducing a lot of new technology in terms of IED (improvised explosive device) detection and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) coverage, night vision devices, static surveillance like PTZ (pan, tilt and zoom) cameras not only for camp security but also for keeping a watch on the roads.

"We have tried to deny the Naxals the space to operate by deploying all these measures," he said.

No doubt, the DG said, the area and the number of districts in the control of the Naxals has reduced and there has been a 40 per cent decline in LWE violence incidents over a period of the last few years.

"West Bengal is almost clear except some areas on the border, Telangana has got a lot of success and now Naxal activity is restricted there close to the Chhattisgarh border.

"Today, the main movement (of the Naxals) is restricted to certain areas, primarily Chhattisgarh's south Bastar region and also the cut-off area in Odisha which is the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border and certain parts of Jharkhand," the DG said.

Srinagar, Aug 29: In a breakthrough, two Hizbul Mujahideen militants including its commander Altaf Ahmed Dar alias Altaf Kachroo, one of the oldest surviving terrorist, were killed today in South Kashmir's Anantnag district, police said.

Giving details, a spokesman of the police said that based on a specific intelligence, Jammu and Kashmir police along with other security forces launched the search operation at Muniward village of Khanabal area in the district at the crack of the dawn.

"During the searches, terrorists fired on the search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter and in the ensuing encounter two terrorists were eliminated. The killed terrorists were identified as Altaf Ahmad Dar alias Ataf Kachroo alias Moin of Hawoora Mishipora and Omar Rashid Wani of Khudwani Kulgam," the spokesman said.

He said Dar, who also hails from Kulgam in South Kashmir, was currently operating as a one of the most important terrorist Commander of proscribed terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen and had a long history of criminal records since 2007.

"It was a specific operation carried out swiftly by the security forces. In the action both terrorists, who were involved in several cases of civilian atrocities and attacks on policemen, were eliminated," Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Range) Swayam Prakash Pani said here.

Considered as a long time surviving terrorist in the area, Dar was involved in series of terror crimes in the area which included attacks on the security forces and killings of civilians and policemen in South kashmir.

One of the police officials, who was involved in the operation, described him as a 'chief architect' of attacks on policemen.

The police spokesman also said that Dar along with his associate Yasin Itoo played a major role in instigating people during 2016 unrest which was sparked after the death of Hizbul Mujahideen's poster boy Burhan Wani.

The other militant killed in the encounter was Omar Rashid Wani, who had become active since last year.

The spokesman said he was involved in many civilian atrocities and attacks on security establishments.

Wani was also involved in killing of policemen at Anantnag and recently he carried an attack on CRPF in Srinagar and managed to give a slip during the recent Batmaloo encounter site.

The spokesman said though the two were part of the Hizbul Mujahideen terror group, they managed to keep close coordination with other outfit for unleashing terror.
