Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 15: In an unprecedented move, all the four Ministers of the CPI, the second largest constituent in the Left Democratic Front Government in Kerala, today boycotted the meeting of the state Cabinet in protest against the presence of Transport Minister Thomas Chandy, who is facing charges of land grab.
'Yes, it is unprecedented. I received a letter from them saying that they cannot participate in the meeting in which Mr Chandy is also participating,' Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told newspersons here. The CPI ministers should not have taken such a decision, he said, adding that as a minister, Mr Chandy had every right to attend the Cabinet meeting. He made it clear that the Cabinet had not discussed any issues relating to Mr Chandy, whose writ petition challenging a government report alleging gross violation of conservation regulations and illegal reclamation of a water body in the construction of ancillary facilities at his resort in Alappuzha backwaters was turned down by the High Court yesterday. The court observed that it would be better for the Minister to step down and fight the issue legally as a common citizen. A Cabinet Minister cannot approach the Court against the Government, it said. However, the Chief Minister said the NCP state leadership sought some more time to discuss the matter with their National leadership. An appropriate decision would be taken once the the NCP leadership conveyed their decision. UNI
