Kochi, Jan 25 :  The country's first Super Fab Lab, which will give a major push to the hardware industry in the country and the only such facility outside the U.S., was launched at the Integrated Startup Complex of the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) here on Saturday.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the facility through remote control from Palakkad, where he attended a function at the government Polytechic College.

The Super Fab Lab will function in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The Fab Labs concept, the only one outside the U.S., is the brainchild of Dr Neil Gershenfeld, presently the Director of MIT Centre for Bits and Atoms, who set up the first Fab Lab in the U.S. about 17 years ago, KSUM said.

Dr Gershenfeld was in the city for nearly a week to personally supervise setting up of the Super Fab Lab.

Fab Labs are fabrication laboratories offering digital fabrication and computation.

Dr Gershenfeld asserted that the new facility, the only one outside the U.S., not only "has the tools to make anything, it also makes the tools that make things.

It will break down boundaries between the digital and physical worlds," he said.

Relying on Computer Aided Design with additive and subtractive manufacturing, the Super Fab Lab allows researchers, innovators and developers to do things beyond the purview of the states existing fab labs.

Dr Gershenfeld said the Super Fab Lab is a pioneering venture by Kerala and would let people produce what they consume

The state-of-art facility enables the state to produce machines locally, for access throughout Kerala. It can be for business, education and almost anything.

"It is an exciting initiative and the whole world is watching what is happening here so that they can follow on your footsteps", Dr Gershenfield was quoted as saying by Kerala Startup Mission in a release.

The Super Fab Lab, which is poised to give Indias hardware industry a huge leap by allowing researchers, innovators and developers to do things beyond the purview of the states existing fab labs, will function in collaboration with MIT, it said.

KSUM CEO Dr Saji Gopinath said the Super Fab Lab will give a huge boost to Keralas industrial sector.

"Innovations that happen at the Lab can soon get translated to the industrial sector and we may see quite a few startups springing up in the near future," he said.

The KSUM Super Fab Lab has state-of-the-art machines worth more than Rs seven crore in a 10,000 square feet area.

The Super Fab Lab is set to make ISC one of the countrys most sought-after investment hubs, coming as it is after electronics hardware incubator Maker Village and its biotech counterpart Bio-Nest.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced a new Design Biennale slated to be held in Kochi in 2021. He was speaking at the opening of the fourth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) on Wednesday.

Kochi, Dec 13 (PTI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced a new Design Biennale slated to be held in Kochi in 2021.

He was speaking at the opening of the fourth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) on Wednesday.

KMB is touted to be the subcontinent's biggest art event featuring works by 94 Indian and international artists.

"After the next edition of the Biennale (KMB in 2020), there will be a Design Biennale in Kochi," Vijayan said.

Based on the curatorial theme of 'Possibilities for a Non-Alienated Life', the 108-day-long art extravaganza, curated by artist Anita Dube this year, seeks to explore newer access to art practices amid seminars, workshops, lectures, cinema and performances.

Vijayan said the government continued to support the Kochi Biennale despite the devastating floods that ravaged the state earlier this year, because art was an important aspect of an individual life. "The government has been spearheading the rebuilding of the state, but we have not gone back on the grant for the event. Art is necessary for man to be elevated from animal status."

The chief minister added that efforts to find a permanent venue for the Biennale were gaining strength.

According to Dube, who curated the Biennale after a year's travel across the globe, the event aimed at blending "pleasure with pedagogy". "I hope these works also evoke questions in your mind."

Dube has divided the show into two parts. While one exhibits all the artist projects, the other, Pavilion, is a space she has created to allow anybody and everybody to be creative and "become a curator".

Kerala Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said the state and the Biennale had come to develop a symbiotic relationship, with the event drawing a significant number of tourists here.

"The Biennale boosts Kerala's tourism as the government has been aggressively promoting the art event abroad," he said.

The evening also saw a 90-minute long 'Chenda Melam' orchestra of 180 artistes, led by top drummer Peruvanam Kuttan Marar, and came to a close with a concert by Bangalore-based Indian folk-fusion band Vasu Dixit Collective.

The event will continue till March 29 and is being held across 10 heritage venues in the twin towns of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, as well as in downtown Ernakulam.

New Delhi, Jun 23 :  Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of consistently ignoring Kerala and its demands.

Vijayan's, who was yesterday denied permission to meet the prime minister, also alleged the Centre was not paying heed to the country's federal structure.

The PM has been ignoring Kerala. The Centre's aversion to Kerala's demands is leading to the collapse of several industries in the state. When we needed to see the PM and submit our requests, we were not allowed to do so, Vijayan said.

"We need a satisfied state and a strong Centre in the federal system," Vijayan said, adding that the response of the previous governments to the state's demands was not as bad as it was now.

For instance, in the case of the Kanjikode rail coach factory, our requests were completely ignored. The Centre's involvement must indicate a basic understanding of the federal system and the states' needs. Unfortunately, the central government does not recognise this need. The previous governments understood this. I am not saying that they took all necessary measures. But things were not as bad as they are now, he said.

An all-party delegation from Kerala had yesterday sought permission to meet the prime minister to convey their grievances over the reduced ration allocations to meet the food security needs of the state. They were instead asked to meet the Union minister concerned.

Vijayan had last week extended support to his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, who was on a sit-in at the Lieutenant Governor's office, against the alleged strike of bureaucrats.PTI

'Yes, it is unprecedented. I received a letter from them saying that they cannot participate in the meeting in which Mr Chandy is also participating,' Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told newspersons here. The CPI ministers should not have taken such a decision, he said, adding that as a minister, Mr Chandy had every right to attend the Cabinet meeting. He made it clear that the Cabinet had not discussed any issues relating to Mr Chandy, whose writ petition challenging a government report alleging gross violation of conservation regulations and illegal reclamation of a water body in the construction of ancillary facilities at his resort in Alappuzha backwaters was turned down by the High Court yesterday. The court observed that it would be better for the Minister to step down and fight the issue legally as a common citizen. A Cabinet Minister cannot approach the Court against the Government, it said. However, the Chief Minister said the NCP state leadership sought some more time to discuss the matter with their National leadership. An appropriate decision would be taken once the the NCP leadership conveyed their decision. UNI
