NCP president Sharad Pawar

Mumbai, Jan 25 :  NCP president Sharad Pawar on Saturday said that all political leaders know that their phones are tapped, which is why they do not think about it seriously.

His comments come a day after Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh accused the previous BJP-led state government of tapping phones of senior NCP and Congress leaders during the 2019 Lok Sabha and Assembly polls.

"It is not new, we all know our phones are tapped.

Hence, we never thought about it seriously," Pawar told reporters here.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis had rejected on Friday Deshmukh's allegation saying that phone tapping was not the culture of the state and his government had not given any such orders.

The Maharashtra government has directed the cyber cell of the state police to look into various complaints of snooping/phone-tapping against the Fadnavis government

Mumbai, Apr 23 :  People are in a mood to change the Modi-led government but manipulation of EVMs is the "only worrying factor", NCP chief Sharad Pawar said here Tuesday.

He was speaking at a joint media interaction addressed by leaders of the Congress, NCP, TDP, Trinamool Congress, AAP CPI(M), CPI and DMK.

"EVMs are vulnerable to programming errors," TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu said. The BJP can get votes only through manipulation, he added.

EVMs can be manipulated, hacked and even malfunction, he said. Only 18 countries have so far adopted EVMs, he added.

Naidu said the economy, business and agriculture are in a bad shape under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh said the Election Commission is acting like Dhritrashtra. "You press any button, the vote goes to the BJP," he said.

Counting of 50 per cent VVPAT machines is not an unreasonable demand, senior Congress leader Sushilkumar Shinde said.         [Agencies]
Mumbai, Dec 14 : In the wake of the Supreme Court dismissing the pleas challenging the Rafale deal, the NCP Friday said the Modi government should not fear a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the issue if its conscience was clean.

In a relief to the NDA government, the apex court Friday dismissed the pleas challenging the deal between India and France for procurement of 36 Rafale jets saying there was no occasion to "really doubt the decision making process" warranting setting aside of the contract.

"Honourable Supreme Court is correct in not interfering on the pricing decision of #Rafale. If the Modi government is clean in conscience, why fear a Joint Parliamentary Committee? What are they hiding? #RafaleDeal #RafaleVerdict," Maharashtra NCP chief Jayant Patil said on Twitter.

The apex court rejected the pleas seeking lodging of an FIR and the court-monitored probe alleging irregularities in the Rs 58,000 crore deal, in which both the countries have entered into an inter-governmental agreement (IGA).

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi dealt with "three broad areas of concern" raised in the petitions -- the decision making process, pricing and the choice of Indian offset partners (IOP) -- and said there was no reason for intervention by the court on the "sensitive issue" of purchase of 36 jets.  PTI

Mumbai, Sep 5: The MNS and the NCP Wednesday likened Maharashtra BJP legislator Ram Kadam to demon king Ravan for telling youngsters he would "kidnap" a girl they like even if she rejects their proposal.

The Ghatkopar MLA, who has expressed regret over his remarks, made the comments at a 'dahi handi' event in his suburban Ghatkopar assembly constituency Monday night.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena put up posters depicting Kadam as Ravan outside Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' residence and in Ghatkopar.

"The 'dashing' MLA, who proclaims himself to be compassionate, will abduct daughters. If he or his men do so, file a police complaint and also let us know. We will help you safeguard your daughters," the Raj Thackeray-led party said in the posters.

Nationalist Congress Party spokesperson Nawab Malik said the BJP's "Ravan-like" face is out and its legislator will be called "Ravan Kadam" till he apologises.

"Expressing regret and apologising are very different things. The NCP will keep protesting against him and call him 'Ravan Kadam' till he apologises. State-wide protests will be held against him till he apologises," the opposition leader said.

Kadam, who is heard making the comments in a video clip, has said his comments were distorted.

"I only repeated a sentence made by one of the persons standing in the crowd... It was not my sentence. The clip which has gone viral is only of 40 seconds. However, later I had said mothers, sisters and daughters in all households are Lakshmi who need to be respected," he said late Tuesday.

"Yet, if I have hurt sentiments, I express regret," the MLA said.

Mumbai, Aug 18: Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde today asked the state government to help Kerala which has been ravaged by the worst floods in almost a century.

He asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to announce financial assistance for the southern state and also urged the Centre to declare the floods there a national disaster.

"Whenever any part of the country has been in danger, Maharashtra has been at the forefront of lending a helping hand. Today, millions of people of Kerala are at risk," Munde said.

"In their time of need, it is imperative that Maharashtra plays the role of a big brother and goes all out to help the Kerala government in relief operations," the NCP leader added.

"We urge Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to perform his raj dharma and financially aid the Kerala government," he said.

Munde claimed that the emergency aid of Rs 500 crore declared for Kerala by the Centre was not sufficient.

State Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said over 320 people had lost their lives till now, adding that Maharashtra should declare financial aid with an open heart.

"This is the culture of Maharashtra. Even during the Uttarakhand floods (in June 2013), Maharashtra had immediately declared financial assistance to the ravaged state," he tweeted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Kerala Governor P Sathasivam, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister K J Alphons today conducted an aerial survey of some of the flood-affected areas in Kerala.

As per information from the control room of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, since August 8, 194 people have lost their lives and 36 are missing.

Over 3.14 lakh people have been moved to relief camps.

The southern state is facing its worst flood in 100 years with gates of 80 dams opened and all rivers in spate.

Mumbai, Jul 26: Taking a dim view of violence during the Maratha quota stir in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena said today the state paid the price for the government's nature to "suppress" issues, and criticised Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for "missing from the scene".

The BJP usually leads in taking credit (for its various policies), and it should do the same for yesterday's bandh and violence, the Sena said.

Had the chief minister agreed to talk to the Maratha community when it all started with some people protesting in Parli (Beed district), the subsequent events would not have taken place, it said.

"However, the state had to pay the price for the government's nature, wherein it tends to suppress issues," the Sena alleged in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

It had become difficult for police to control the crowd taking part in the Maratha morchas because apart from being emotional, this (the community's demands) has also become a prestige issue and the government seemed helpless in the last 24 hours, the Sena noted.

It said that Chief Minister Fadnavis, who usually tries to solve every problem himself, was missing from the scene and nobody knew his whereabouts or what he was up to, while the state was in chaos as the Maratha agitation turned violent.

Similar was the condition of Sudhakarrao Naik's government after the 1992 riots, said the Sena, which is an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Maharashtra.

"Where was the chief minister when protesters turned violent, burnt vehicles. Why did the government run away? Maharashtra should know this," the Marathi daily said.

It said the government's decision to fill over 70,000 posts was also responsible for the violence.

"The violence was only natural when the community members feared losing all of these jobs in the absence of reservation," it said.

The policies framed by Fadnavis and his colleagues with regard to the community would be keenly watched, the Sena said.

Notably, Fadnavis had said in the state legislature last week that his government would allot 16 per cent of the 72,000 posts it is going to fill to the Maratha candidates in the form of backlog, if the Bombay High Court allows quota for the community.

"Some people are saying that the posts won't be available to the Marathas in case the high court announces reservation for them if we went ahead with the mega recruitment. I would like to assure that we have more posts available than this," Fadnavis had told the assembly.

"Even if we fill the 72,000 posts, 16 per cent posts would be filled as a backlog as and when reservation is granted to the Marathas. Therefore, there would be no injustice meted out to the community," he had said.

The Sena said, "The BJP is at the forefront of taking credit. Similarly, they should take credit for yesterday's bandh and violence. They may take full credit for providing reservation to the Marathas but there should be an end to this violence."

The previous Congress-NCP government could have resolved this issue keeping the legal aspects in mind. However, it chose the ordinance route to grant 16 per cent reservation to Marathas which was ultimately challenged in court, it noted.

Nagpur, Jul 13: Despite Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' assurance in the Legislative Assembly that the Nanar project won't be forced on people, opposition Congress-NCP and ally Shiv Sena stalled the proceedings of the House on the issue for the third consecutive day.

The House witnessed three adjournments- twice for 15 minutes and once for ten minutes- before it was adjourned for the day as members of the opposition and Shiv Sena trooped into the well of the House shouting slogans seeking withdrawal of the land acquisition notification and scrapping of the project.

After the Question Hour, Fadnavis told the House that the West Coast Refinery was in the country's interest and the state government will take everyone on board before going ahead with the project at Nanar in Ratnagiri district.

Making a statement in the Lower House on the issue which rocked the legislature proceedings for the last two days, Fadnavis said, "The West Coast Refinery is important for our own oil security and export, for which we have signed MoUs with the Middle East countries."

"Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh were eyeing the project. But Andhra was ruled out since the route was not proper. Maharashtra was given priority. The total investment is worth Rs 3 lakh crore," he said.

He added that Gujarat's economy has got a boost due to the Jamnagar refinery. "There is no adverse impact on horticulture and environment," Fadnavis said.

The West Coast Refinery is a green refinery with fourth generation technology. It will have the highest emission standards. A green belt will be developed around he project, he added.

He told the House that the refinery is being modelled on the lines of the one in Singapore.

Fadnavis said 32(1) notification for land acquisition was issued but along with consent for land acquisition, there was opposition to it as well.

"Industries Minister Subhash Desai announced withdrawal of the notification and the file has come to me. I haven't taken any decision on it. Wherever there is opposition, we are holding talks to resolve the concerns. The project will not be forced on the people," he said.

Fadnavis said the environment and social impact analysis would be carried out by National Environmental Engineering Research Institute(NEERI) and IIT Bombay.

"Talks are on to resolve differences," he said.

However, the opposition parties and the Shiv Sena were not satisfied with the reply.

Leader of OppositionRadhakrishna Vikhe Patil demanded that Fadnavis announces scrapping of the project.

Senior Congress leader and former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said Fadnavis should explain to the people how the project was in the interest of the state.

"Saudi Aramco hires Pakistani engineers. Shall we allow Pakistani nationals into the country. Marine Academy and International Finance Centre have been shifted from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. Why is the refinery brought here?" he asked.

NCP MLA Jayant Patil sought Fadnavis's reply on whether the project will stay in Maharashtra or not.

"It is not possible to reply in yes or no. We will resolve the differences through talks," he said.

"Shiv Sena opposed the Mumbai-Nagpur corridor, but after we explained the importance of the project, they are supporting it. We will arrive at a consensus, address all concerns and then only move forward, "he said.

Shiv Sena's Sunil Prabhu said his party's opposition to the project will continue, and demanded that the project be scrapped.

He said a nuclear power project as well as a refinery project in Konkan is bad for the region's horticulture and fishing industry.

Fadnavis said he had not given a presentation on the project to Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. "I thought showing the presentation to Industries minister Subhash Desai would be enough," he said when asked by Patil if he had shown the presentation to Thackeray.

The Sena members rushed to the Well demanding that the chief minister announces scrapping of the project. They were joined by the Congress and NCP members.

Thereafter, the House was adjourned for 15 minutes by Speaker Haribhau Bagde.

Later, after the introduction of bills, the House was again adjourned for 15 minutes by presiding officer Sudhakar Deshmukh.

After the business resumed later, Jayant Patil said the government was in a minority on the Nanar refinery issue and should not make the issue a matter of prestige. He demanded that the project be scrapped.

Prabhu said the 32 (1) notification regarding the withdrawal of the land acquisition notification was approved by the chief minister.

Thereafter, House was adjourned for the third time for ten minutes.

After the proceedings resumed, the Gram Panchayats Amendment Bill was introduced for the passage amid din.

Jayant Patil said there was a contradiction in the Sena's stand as its members were opposing the government, but party minister Sanjay Rathod was moving the bill. The bill was approved by a voice vote and the House was adjourned for the day.

Nagpur, Jul 5: The Maharashtra Legislative Council witnessed noisy protests today by the NCP members over the issue of compensation to farmers for pest attack on crops following which the House was adjourned for the day.

As soon as Council Chairman Ramraje Nimbalkar called for the Question Hour, Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde (NCP) demanded a discussion on compensation to cotton farmers who had faced losses due to the 'pink bollworm' (a pest) attack on their crops.

The chairman said the discussion would be taken up after the Question Hour.

However, Munde termed it as a "serious and important issue" and demanded that it be taken up on priority.

The NCP members started raising slogans against the BJP-led state government and trooped into the well of the House.

The chairman then adjourned the House for 30 minutes.

Later, when the House reassembled, Munde again demanded an urgent discussion on the issue.

The NCP legislators, led by Munde, continued to raise slogans against the state government and stalled the House proceedings.

The Chair then again adjourned the House for half-an-hour.

When the House proceedings resumed after the second adjournment, the NCP members continued with their noisy protests over the demand for a discussion on compensation to cotton farmers.

Amid the din, the Chair adjourned the House for the day.

Mumbai, Jun 12: BJP candidate Suresh Dhas today won the Maharashtra Legislative Council election from the Osmanabad-Beed-Latur local bodies seat.
The former Maharashtra minister defeated NCP-backed Ashok Jagdale by a margin of 74 votes, an election official said.
Of the 1003 votes polled, Dhas got 526 votes, while Jagdale polled 452 votes, an official release said. Altogether 25 votes were declared invalid, while a voter opted for the None of the Above (NOTA) option.
Counting of votes was held today for seat, where biennial elections, along with five other Legislative Council seats, were held on May 21.
While counting of votes for those five seats was held on May 24, the process for Osmanabad-Beed-Latur local bodies seat was deferred due to a court order on suspension of some local bodies members in Beed district.
In the results declared for the five local body seats on May 24, the BJP and the Shiv Sena had won two seats each, while the NCP retained one.
The ruling BJP and the Shiv Sena had contested the polls in alliance. The opposition Congress and the NCP had also tied-up for the biennial polls.
Apart from Amravati, the BJP bagged Wardha-Chandrapur- Gadchiroli local bodies seat.
The Shiv Sena won the Nashik and Parbhani-Hingoli local bodies seats.
The NCP retained the Raigad-Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg seat but lost the Nashik seat to the Sena.
The Congress fared poorly in all the three seats it contested -- Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadhchiroli, Parbhani-Hingoli and Amravati.
With today's result, the BJP's tally in the 78-member Upper House has increased to 19, while the NCP's tally is 21.
Congress has 17 and Shiv Sena 11 members in the House.

Mumbai, Jun 12: Congress president Rahul Gandhi will appear before a court in the adjoining Thane district today in connection with a defamation case filed against him by a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker.
Gandhi arrived in Mumbai this morning on a two-day visit to Maharashtra.
He will appear before the court at Bhiwandi in Thane at 11 am today, a Congress leader earlier said.
The court had on May 2 asked Gandhi to appear before it today to record his plea in the defamation case filed by RSS worker Rajesh Kunte in 2014.
Kunte had filed the case after watching Rahul Gandhi's speech at an election rally in which he had claimed that the RSS was behind the killing of Mahatma Gandhi.
"The RSS people had killed (Mahatma) Gandhi," the Congress president had allegedly said in the rally.
During his two-day visit to Maharashtra, Rahul Gandhi is also expected to address party workers and interact with its corporators in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
Tomorrow, he is scheduled to meet the kin of Dadaji Khobragade, the rural inventor who revolutionised rice farming, at Chandrapur in Vidarbha, before returning to Delhi.
Khobragade, 78, died earlier this month after a prolonged illness.
Contrary to media reports, Rahul Gandhi's itinerary doesn't mention any meeting with NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, the leader said.
"Top leaders (of both the parties) can meet any time.
But no such meeting is on the agenda today," he said.
"Rahulji will appear before the court in the morning, address party workers in the afternoon and interact with Congress corporators about Mumbai's civic issues," the leader added.

Lucknow, Apr 23: Though the party was yet to decide whether to contest the polls or not, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav will campaign for Congress in the Karnataka Assembly elections next month.
The Congress, affirming its commitment to its alliance with the SP for 2019 Lok Sabha election,
has named the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh as its star campaigner for Karnataka Assembly polls.
Along with Akhilesh Yadav , RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav and NCP leader Sharad Pawar are among the star campaigners for the Congress in Karnataka assembly polls this time along with the party's own leaders.
Surprisingly, SP and BSP are going for an alliance in UP, but in Karnataka they will go separate ways. BSP is contesting the Karnataka Assembly election in alliance with Janata Dal (Secular) led by former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda.
SP spokesperson Rajendra Choudhury said here on Monday that Akhilesh Yadav will campaign for the Congress candidates in Karnataka assembly polls." We are yet to decide on whether to field any candidate in alliance with the Congress in this elections," he said.
Though SP has its organisational unit in Karnataka and it had asked it to decide the names of the candidates a few week ago but it now it seems that they are not contesting the Assembly election in the southern state.
S Bangarappa, former Chief Minister of Karnataka, was elected to Lok Sabha from Karnataka on Samajwadi Party ticket, a decade ago.
Karnataka will go to polls on May 12 to elect its representatives for the 225-member Assembly. The results will be out on May 15. UNI

New Delhi, Apr 4: Aam Aadmi Party convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday called on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who is in the national capital for a two-day visit.
Mr Naidu’s meeting with Mr Kejriwal was held at the Andhra Bhavan, where the former is staying, the Chief Minister's office stated.
On his first visit, after his party, Telugu Desam Party, quit from the Union Cabinet and the BJP-led NDA, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister on Tuesday visited Parliament and met several opposition leaders and BJP allies.
The TDP supremo met opposition leaders, including NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Congress’ Veerappa Moily and Jyotiraditya Scindia, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandhopadyay and Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav on Tuesday.
Mr Naidu also met BJP allies like Apna Dal’s leader and Minister in Modi government Anupriya Patel, Akali Dal leader and Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Rawat.
Mr Naidu's meeting was to seek support for the No-Confidence Motion, moved by the TDP against the Modi government.
Mr Naidu will address the media at 1500 hrs later in the day, when he is expected to announce his future plans.
The southern party had sharply criticised the Narendra Modi government after the Centre refused to grant Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh. UNI

New Delhi, Mar 27: The proceedings of the Lok Sabha was a washout on Tuesday yet again as the House could not take up the No Confidence Motion against the Narendra Modi government due to continuous uproarious scenes.
As the repeated plea from the Chair urging the slogan shouting AIADMK members and rebel AAP member Dharam Vira Gandhi to return to their seats from the Well did not yield expected results, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House for the day.
In the post noon session, taking up the No Confidence Motion moved by the floor leaders of various parties including Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress), P Karunakaran (CPI-M) and Thota Narasimham (TDP) and other members, the Speaker told the agitating members that she had to do headcount of 50 members standing on their designated places to allow taking up of the motion.
"I am duty bound to allow the motion, but I cannot do the headcount in this situation and therefore I request all members to go back to their seats," she said.
The Congress, NCP, Left and TDP members resorted to unique style to demonstrate their support for the No Confidence Motion and several members carried a placard each with numbers inserted on it.
Amid the din, Congress floor leader Mr Kharge said, "Madam, you require 50 Members to allow the No Confidence Motion, there are now more than 50 members. We all want a debate on the Motion".
The Speaker, however, contended that she could not do the headcount amid unruly scenes in the House.
Making a brief intervention, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the Modi goverment is keen for debate in the House on the no-trust motion as the ruling regime enjoys "confidence" both in the House and outside.
He also slammed Congress role in the entire episode and said the grand old party is "losing its primacy" in national politics.
"The Congress is now a marginal party. Even for No Confidence Motion, they are following others," Mr Kumar said and counseled that Mr Kharge's party should do some "soul searching" on the matter.
"As the House is not in order, I will not be able to allow to take up the Motion," the Speaker said in reference to the AIADMK members who were raising slogans demanding setting up of Cauvery Water Management Board.
The Patiala lawmaker Mr Gandhi was in the Well with a placard reading - 'State Control over their resources'.
In between, the Speaker allowed laying of papers and later adjourned the House till Wednesday.
A No-Confidence Motion in the Lok Sabha can be accepted, only if there is support of at least 50 members.
Earlier, the House was adjourned within minutes of assembling till 12 noon due to bedlam created chiefly by the AIADMK members. UNI

New Delhi, Mar 27: Giving a fresh momentum to the efforts by regional players to frame up a joint electoral strategy and a new front for the general elections next year, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee arrived here on Monday night to hold political meetings with key opposition leaders.
According to Trinamool Congress sources, Ms Banerjee will attend dinner meet being hosted by NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday night.
She may also meet Congress leader Sonia Gandhi but that is being described more as a courtesy call.
A Trinamool leader said: "Every meeting should not be linked to politics. Sonia Gandhi has been unwell for sometime, so it can be a courtesy call".
Ms Banerjee's arrival in the national capital for the crucial dinner meeting convened by NCP chief Mr Pawar is significant as the West Bengal Chief Minister had skipped dinner meet of 19 opposition parties hosted by Sonia Gandhi earlier this month. Instead she had nominated her party colleague Sudip Bandyopadhyay for the same.
In the last fortnight, Ms Banerjee had met Telangana Chief Minister and TRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao in Kolkata making it amply clear that she is keen to play a major role in stitching up a front against the BJP for the general elections.
In recent weeks, Ms Banerjee also increased engagements with other regional leaders including Lalu Prasad Yadav (RJD), Akhilesh Yadav (Samajwadi), Mayawati (BSP) and Arvind Kejriwal (AAP).
In the larger political scenario vis-a-vis formation of a new front of regional parties, the game has turned more exciting with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu deciding to quit the BJP-led NDA.
In mid-nineties, Mr Naidu had played important role in the formation of United Front which gave two Prime Ministers H D Deve Gowda and I K Gujral - of course with "outside support" of the Congress. The CPI was part of both the governments with Indrajit Gupta becoming Home Minister and Chaturanan Mishra the Agriculture Minister.
According to sources, some regional parties want to keep the Congress 'out' of their scheme of things, but the likes of Mamata Banerjee and Sharad Pawar - incidentally both former Congress leaders - and even a section of Left parties insist that no result oriented formidable opposition front can be formed without the Congress.
A section of opposition leaders are though hesitant to give 'leadership' role to Congress president Rahul Gandhi even as they all seemed to enjoy good working relations with the chairperson of Congress Parliamentary Party Sonia Gandhi. UNI
