New Delhi, Nov 20: In a set back to Congress endeavours for forging a powerful anti-BJP front in Gujarat, the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday said the party would fight the ensuing polls "alone".
"We wanted to contest in Gujarat in alliance with the Congress and had talks with them too initially, but the Congress did not seem serious and kept on delaying. We are already prepared to contest for the last one-and-half years. Now, we have decided to fight alone," NCP leader Praful Patel said. The NCP's decision came a day after the Congress declared its first list of 77 candidates for the first phase of the elections on December 9. "We are confident that we will do even better alone and bag maximum seats in a solo fight," Mr Patel said. Voting for the two-phase polls are scheduled for December 9 and 14. The count of votes for Gujarat polls along with that of Himachal Pradesh will take place on December 18. It is not for the first time that NCP has deserted the opposition camp and decided to contest the polls in the western state solo.
Even in 2002 - aftermath the communal riots, NCP had contested alone and that had played crucial role in the ultimate analysis to help BJP steal victory in the state. UNI
