New Dehi,
Nov 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held talks with the Belgian
King Philippe and both the leaders discussed issues of bilateral
importance.
"His Majesty King Philippe would be making the first State visit to India following his ascension to the throne in 2013. The visit would further strengthen the historical strong ties between the two countries. Belgium was also among the first European countries to establish a diplomatic mission in India after Independence," a MEA statement said ahead of the visit of the King.
"PM @narendramodi receives His Majesty The King Philippe of Belgium at Hyderabad House on his 1st State visit to India," MEA spokesman Raveesh Kuar tweeted. Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj called on the visiting dignitary, who is in India on a five-day trip. The Belgian King is accompanied by six ministers and a high powered business delegation comprising CEOs of 86 Belgian companies. India is Belgium’s second largest export destination and third largest trade partner outside EU. In 2016-17, our bilateral trade amounted to $13.28 billion of which exports from India to Belgium accounted for $5.65 billion while imports from Belgium accounted for $6.62 billion, MEA has said. Ms Swaraj is reported to have an "engaging conversation" with the King on expanding the bilateral relations between India and Belgium. Philippe and his wife, Queen Mathilde, were accorded a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan. UNI
