Lucknow, Aug 7   :   Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday expressed deep condolences on the demise of former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, saying she was known for a clean and dignified politics.

The standards of clean politics she set were etched in minds of people, he said in New Delhi after paying tributes to the veteran parliamentarian.

The chief minister said, "Sushmaji's departure is a big loss for the whole country. Sushmaji was an inspiration for all of us."

He said Swaraj made a significant contribution to politics for over four decades and served the country with the same devotion she had on entering the public life.

She performed all responsibilities given to her by the party and it was because of people like her that the respect for women grew, he said.

Adityanath, who visited the BJP office in Delhi to pay tributes to the departed leader, said, "Sushmaji was always ready to share her experiences. She would often tell us as to how to present oneself in Parliament. She was a great orator and guided us on how to address people on different occasions."

He recalled that despite being unwell, Sushmaji was continuously contributing towards the success of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Varanasi.

"The way she was working for the success of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas from 7 am to 12 pm is truly admirable. Her contribution will always be remembered," he said, according to an official release issued here.                                                      [Agencies]

Chandigarh, Aug 7  :  In the Ambala Cantonment neighbourhood where Sushma Swaraj grew up, old-timers remember her with fondness.

Right from her childhood, she was fond of taking part in debates and contests in school, those who lived close to the family home in Cantonment's BC Bazaar area recalled.

"From Class 6, she had shown an inclination towards politics and later she realised what she had aimed for, Shyam Bihari, an elderly man who lives in the same neighbourhood, told reporters after the news of the BJP leader's death on Tuesday night came in.

She was very affectionate, caring and ever ready to help. To render help to any genuine person who was in need, she did not care even if he was a supporter of a rival political party," he said.

Another man, now in his 60s, recalled that Swaraj used to fetch milk for her family in the morning, around the time he and his friends played cricket in the neighbourhood.

At times, the cricket ball hit would hit the pail, spilling the milk.

But Sushmaji never got angry at us and always used to tell us to continue playing," he said.

Swaraj went to the SD College in Ambala Cantonment and later pursued a law course at the Panjab University in Chandigarh.

Her brother Gulshan currently stays with his family at the same Ambala house.

Gauri, a domestic help at the house, was inconsolable on learning about the former external affairs minister's death.

"She was very nice. She had come here a few months ago. When she learnt that I had two daughters, she told me to give them a good education and offered any help that might be needed from her side to ensure that they got the best facilities, she said.

"We used to call Sushmaji 'buaji'. I am deeply saddened at her death. At the same time, I am also proud of the fact that she rose to such heights in her life and became a role model for millions," she said.

Dinesh Aggarwal, another Ambala Cantonment resident, recalled how Swaraj once rushed to the door late in the evening to meet him at her Delhi home.

"When I reached her Delhi residence, her aides told me madam would not meet anyone as she had just returned from a busy day in Parliament. However, when she learnt that Vicky, which is my nickname, had come from Ambala to meet her, she rushed out to meet me, he said. We talked for nearly 20 minutes."

People from other parts of the state also expressed grief.

"I still cannot believe that she is not amongst us. Her death is a big loss to the nation," Hisar resident Lokesh Kumar said.

Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij, who represents the Ambala Cantonment Assembly constituency, described Swaraj as a leader with rare qualities and said he was deeply saddened by her death.

He recalled that Swaraj was elected as an MLA for the first time at a young age of 25, and later went on to become Haryana's education minister.

"In 1977, it so happened that the ticket was first given to Som Prakash Chopra, who was jailed during Emergency. But for some reasons, when he did not enter the fray, the ticket was given to Sushmaji, who won, and the Janata Party government was formed," Vij said.

In 1990, Swaraj moved to the Rajya Sabha. Vij has been representing the Ambala Cantonment constituency since then.

The minister told PTI that Swaraj was raised by her maternal grandparents after the death of her mother.

The veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader died Tuesday night following a massive cardiac arrest. She was 67.

Swaraj was a member of the Haryana legislative assembly from 1977-82 and 1987-90.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar mourned her death."It is a personal loss for me," said in a tweet.

"Her contributions to Haryana and India will never be forgotten. My deepest condolences to her bereaved family members. May God give her eternal peace," he said.

Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda too described her death a "personal loss".

"She was a person with rare qualities, ever ready to help others," he said.                [Agencies]

Former Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj has passed away on August 6.

Sushma Swaraj had suffered a massive cardiac arrest, and was rushed to AIIMS Hospital, New Delhi as her condition was critical. Attempts to revive her had failed.

The 67-year-old had not been keeping well lately, which is why she had not contested the recently held Lok Sabha election and opted out of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's new government.
Earlier this evening, Ms Swaraj had tweeted congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation bill in parliament.
"Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime," her tweet read.
She has been the chief minister of Delhi, and held the portfolios of information and broadcasting, and health in the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Wuzhen (China), Feb 27 :  External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday raised the recent Pulwama suicide attack in her crucial bilateral meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi here, a day after India destroyed a major Jaish-e-Muhammed (JeM) terror training camp in Pakistan.

"I am visiting China at a time when there is grief and anger in India. It is the worst terrorist attack directed against our security forces in Jammu and Kashmir," she said in her opening remarks during the meeting held on the side-lines of Russia, India, China Foreign Ministers meeting.

"The attack was carried out by Jaish-e-Muhammed, the Pakistan-based and supported terrorist organisation," she said.

Forty Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed in a suicide attack by Pakistan-based JeM in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on February 14, sparking outrage in the country.

Following the incident, India bombed and destroyed JeM's biggest training camp in Balakot in Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, about 80-km from the Line of Control (LoC) early Tuesday, killing a "very large number" of terrorists, trainers and senior commanders.

Stating that the JeM is banned by the UN and other countries, Swaraj told Wang that this terrorist attack is the direct result of the impunity and cover provided to the JeM and its leaders by the Pakistani side .

After the Pulwama attack the entire UN has spoken with full voice to condemn it, she said.

Swaraj who arrived here early this morning told Wang that this is their first meeting this year and therefore an opportune time for the two sides to take stock of the bilateral relations and look ahead for cooperation.

"This is our first meeting this year. Therefore, an opportune time for us to take stock of our bilateral relations and look ahead for cooperation. The India-China relationship is an important relationship for both of our countries," she said.

Referring to the Wuhan summit between Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Swaraj said "we have made substantial progress in relations".

"It is important for both sides to make sure the through and effective implementation of the guidance given by the two leaders," she told Wang, adding that both side made efforts and "we should sustain this".

"Particularly the decision taken by our leaders to maintain strategic communication between them provided an important foundation for the development of our bilateral relations. This channel of strategic communication between the two of us and between senior officials should always remain open," she said.

The meeting between Swaraj and Wang also took place in the immediate backdrop of India's airstrikes on terrorist targets in Pakistan.

Reacting to India's airstrikes, China on Tuesday called for restraint between India and Pakistan following India's airstrikes against terrorist targets in Pakistan and urged New Delhi to carry out its fight against terrorism through international cooperation.

Asked for China's response to India's airstrikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told media briefing in Beijing on Tuesday that "we have taken note of relevant reports."

"I want to say that India and Pakistan are both important countries in South Asia. A sound relationship and cooperation between the two serves the interests of both the countries and peace and stability in South Asia," he said.

"We hope that the parties remain restrained and do more to improve their bilateral relations," he said.

On India's assertion that it was a non-military attack directed against camps of the terrorist groups who are carrying out violent acts in India, Lu said "as for India's claim on taking action against terrorism, well fighting terrorism is a global practice".

"It needs necessary international cooperation. And India needs to create favourable condition internationally for the same, he said.

Lu also said that Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Shah Muhammad Qureshi also spoke to Wang on Monday over the tensions related to the Pulwama attack.

"During the phone call Wang Yi listened carefully to Pakistan Foreign Minister's notification and proposals on the issues and reaffirmed his opinions that the two sides need to advance their cooperation in the counter terrorism for peace and stability in the region," Lu said.

The Pulwama attack and its aftermath as well Tuesday's airstrikes were expected to figure in Swaraj's talks with Russian Foreign Minister SergeY Levrov later in the day.          [Agencies]

New Delhi, Jan 9 : Asserting that no country is immune to the "existential threat" of terrorism, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday said the need of hour is to ensure zero tolerance towards terrorism and those using it as an "instrument of convenience".

Swaraj, in her address at the Raisina Dialogue here, said that with unwavering belief in multilateralism, India speaks not just for itself but also for the cause of justice, opportunity and prosperity around the world.

"For us, transformation is not just a domestic agenda but a global vision," she said.

Talking about the "critical challenges" that confront the world, she said the first among them is terrorism.

"There was a time when India would talk about terrorism and it would be treated as a law and order issue at many global platforms. Today, no country, big or small, is immune to the existential threat, particularly terrorism actively supported and sponsored by states," Swaraj said.

In this digital age, the challenge posed by terrorism is even greater with more vulnerability to radicalisation, she said.

As far back as 1996, India proposed a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations, but it remains a draft to this day because the countries cannot agree on a common definition of terrorism, she said.

"Ensuring zero tolerance towards terrorism and towards those using it as an instrument of convenience is the need of the hour," the external affairs minister said.

She said the threat of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and climate change were also major challenges facing the international community.         PTI

New York, Sep 27: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj held talks with her Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif and discussed bilateral issues, including the US' sanctions against the major crude exporter which are set to be implemented in November.

During the meeting held on the sidelines of the 73rd UN General Assembly session on Wednesday the two sides also discussed the status of Iran nuclear deal with the European Union.

"On the issue of sanctions, India remains engaged with all stakeholders who are part of the process and Iran is one of them. So, it was natural that the issue of sanctions did come up during the meeting, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told reporters here Wednesday.

The two sides shared each others' position about where they stand at this point of time, he said.

"There are developments taking place in different corners of the world," Kumar said, adding that Zarif shared part of the discussion Iran is having with the European Union on the nuclear deal.

We heard them out, we also explained our position. It is important to understand that as far as the sanctions on Iran go, we are also engaged with other stakeholders and countries for example the US as well, Kumar added.

He referred to recently concluded 2+2 dialogue between India and the US during which Washington was sensitised about New Delhi's concerns and expectations.

We felt that there was this understating from the US side on our position, Kumar said, adding that India is working to ensure its energy and national security.

In May, President Donald Trump announced that the US was withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal signed by the Obama administration in 2015, under which Tehran had agreed to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and allow international inspectors in return for lifting of crippling economic sanctions.

The US has told India and other countries to cut oil imports from Iran to "zero" by November 4 or face sanctions.

Kumar said before the sanctions come into effect, India has been talking to several partners and countries on the issue.

"We are engaged with all countries in this regard. We hope that our positions, sensitivities, concerns, which we have explained to the US, must have been taken into account by them. It's not only a question of purchasing oil from Iran but it is also a question of relationship, he said.

Kumar described the talks with Iran as a "good meeting", saying the two countries share strong civilization bonds and go back a long way.

Iran is India's third-largest oil supplier after Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Iran supplied 18.4 million tonnes of crude oil between April 2017 and January 2018 (first 10 months of fiscal 2017-18).

New York, Sep 27: The Antigua government has assured India of its full cooperation in the extradition of fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi, allegedly involved in the USD 2 billion scam in the Punjab National Bank, and conveyed its commitment to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, a senior official said Thursday.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met Foreign Minister of Antigua and Barbuda E P Chet Greene here on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly and raised the extradition issue of Choksi, who is currently in the Caribbean island.

"Greene conveyed to the EAM the assurances of his Prime Minister for the fullest cooperation of their Government in the matter of extradition of Mehul Choksi to India," Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

Kumar told reporters that Greene told Swaraj he wanted to personally inform her about the Antiguan government and its Prime Minister's "commitment on Mehul Choksi's extradition."

The bilateral meeting had been requested by Greene, Kumar said, adding that Swaraj requested to him that there should be "expeditious resolution" of the matter.

Greene said his country too would like this issue to be resolved as quickly as possible within the framework of Antigua's law and court process. He added that Antigua's government will try its best to resolve the issue.

Greene informed Swaraj that there are certain legal angles and court procedures that need to be examined but conveyed full commitment on this issue.

Kumar said the Antiguan minister conveyed that the extradition process itself has to go through a certain legal and court process in his country.

"They have to follow certain procedures internal to their country. At the same time, when we mentioned we would like this to be resolved expeditiously, they expressed their undertaking saying they would like this to be resolved as quickly as possible within the framework of their law and court process," Kumar said.

Choksi is one of the alleged masterminds of the USD 2 billion scam in state-run Punjab National Bank and is an uncle of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi. He is wanted in India by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate probing the fraud, the biggest banking scam in the country.

Choksi had fled India on January 4 this year and took oath of allegiance in Antigua on January 15. His valid passport was revoked in February 2018.

Swaraj's early engagements included a meeting Sunday with World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to discuss global health issues.

She also held discussions with a few members of the Indian diaspora.

On Monday, she will have bilateral meetings with Morocco Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini, Liechtenstein Foreign Minister Aurelia Frick, Nepal's Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell, Colombian Foreign Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo, Ecuador's Foreign Minister Jose Valencia, Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Mongolia's Foreign Minister Tsogtbaatar Damdin.

Asked about the possibility of a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin said New Delhi and Washington just completed a successful round of 2+2 dialogue and discussions are being planned with nations with which India has not had an opportunity to hold bilateral talks.

New Delhi, Sep 6: Ahead of the inaugural two-plus-two dialogue, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held separate meetings Thursday with US Secretary of State Michael R Pompeo and Defence Secretary James Mattis respectively.

Official sources said a number of key bilateral issues were to be discussed during the meetings.

Both Pompeo and Mattis arrived here Wednesday for the inaugural Indo-US two-plus-two talks which was finalised during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Washington last year.

In a special gesture, Swaraj received Secretary Pompeo at the airport here yesterday while Sitharaman welcomed Secretary Mattis, reflecting the importance India attaches to their visit here.

The officials said the focus of the two-plus-two talks will be to deepen global strategic partnership between the two countries and resolve differences over India's defence engagement with Russia and crude oil import from Iran.

United Nations, Aug 7: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will address the annual high-level UN General Assembly session here on September 29, according to the provisional list of speakers released by the UN.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not likely to attend this year's UNGA session. He had given his maiden address to the UN General Assembly as Prime Minister in 2014.

According to the first provisional list of speakers for the General Debate of the 73rd session of the General Assembly, Swaraj will address the high-level session in the afternoon of September 29. She had addressed the General Debate last year as well.

The General Debate will open on September 25 and run through October 1. US President Donald Trump, who had delivered his first address to global leaders from the General Assembly hall's iconic green podium last year, will address the high-level session on the morning of September 25. The US is traditionally the second speaker on the opening day of the General Debate, after Brazil.

According to the list of speakers, Pakistan's Head of Government is scheduled to address global leaders on September 27.

Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan is expected to make his debut in New York for the high-level session. Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had emerged as the single largest side in the National Assembly in the July 25 general elections. The party's parliamentary committee has officially nominated Khan as the party's prime ministerial candidate and he is likely to take oath as the country's next Prime Minister on August 14.

In 2015, Modi had attended the high-level UN Sustainable Development Summit ahead of the General Debate, when world leaders had adopted the ambitious 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, an intergovernmental set of aspiration Goals with 169 targets.

He had also attended the UN Peacekeeping Summit hosted by President Barack Obama when he had announced that India will contribute an additional battalion of 850 troops for UN peacekeeping operation.

Astana, Aug 3: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today held a comprehensive discussion with her Kazakhstan counterpart Kairat Abdrakhmanov on deepening cooperation in areas like trade, energy and defence and security.

Swaraj is on a three-nation tour to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan as part of India's efforts to boost strategic partnership with the resource-rich nations.

"Strategic partners since 2009! EAM @SushmaSwaraj met Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov," Raveesh Kumar, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, tweeted.

The two leaders held a comprehensive discussion on deepening cooperation in trade and investment, defence and security, energy, Information and Communications Technology, pharma, capacity building and culture, he said.

Swaraj was earlier warmly welcomed by Abdrakhmanov at his office ahead of the delegation-level talks.

New Delhi, Aug 2 : Congress President Rahul Gandhi today attacked External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj over the Doklam issue, alleging that she had "buckled and prostrated herself in front of Chinese power".

His assertion came a day after Swaraj told Parliament that the India-China face-off over Doklam was resolved through "diplomatic maturity without losing any ground" and status quo has been maintained.

"Amazing how a lady like Sushma ji has buckled and prostrated herself in front of Chinese power. Absolute subservience to the leader means our brave jawan has been betrayed on the border...," Gandhi tweeted.

He also tagged a media report on a US Congresswoman claiming China has "quietly resumed" its activities in the Doklam area and asserting that neither Bhutan nor India sought to dissuade it. The claim, however, was denied by New Delhi.

Swaraj had told the Lok Sabha that the main objective of the informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Wuhan was to ensure mutual comfort, mutual understanding and mutual trust between the two leaders and all the three objectives had been achieved.

Congresswoman Ann Wagner had made the claim during a Congressional hearing of the US House Foreign Affairs Sub-Committee for Asia and the Pacific last week.   PTI

New Delhi, Jul 30: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that illegal agents have started using asylum seeking as a means to traffick people from India to other countries.

She said Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat report the highest number of such cases where agents traffick people to other countries and they seek asylum on political grounds in those countries.

"The illegal agents take Rs 20-25 lakh from these people and some of them have to cross five countries to reach Mexico and upon reaching the US, they seek asylum," she said while addressing a conference of state women commissions on the issues of NRI Marriages and Trafficking of Women and Children on Friday.

However, when embassy officials go to meet these asylum seekers they refuse as the agents have told them that if they meet the officials it would appear that they are being helped by the Indian government and their request for seeking asylum would be rejected, said Swaraj.

"What these agents are doing is also a form of trafficking which mostly trap people falling in the age group of 20-22 years," she said.

Swaraj said the number of people seeking asylum has been climbing. It increased from 52 to 101 to 340.

"We have launched a campaign to spread awareness about such fraudulent agents, advising people to avail the services of only government-authorised agents," she said, noting that there is a need to break the circle of trafficking run by these agents.

Over 7,000 people from India filed applications for asylum in the US last year, according to a report by the UN refugee agency which said America was the largest recipient of new asylum requests in 2017.

Washington, Jun 26 : External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will hold talks with their American counterparts Mike Pompeo and James Mattis here next week which experts here hope will help change the current narrative surrounding the bilateral relationship amid economic and trade issues.

Pompeo and Mattis will host Swaraj and Sitharaman in Washington DC for the maiden India-US 2+2 Dialogue, the format of which was agreed between the two sides during the White House meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in June last year.

The July 6 dialogue comes at a time of heightened trade tensions between the two countries.

Last week, India announced a plan to raise tariffs on 29 US imports in retaliation for the US' decision to include India in its list of countries covered by higher steel and aluminium duties.

During their engagement, the four Cabinet ministers are expected to spend time on discussing strategic issues in particular those related to defence, the Indo-Pacific region and the South Asia policy of the Trump administration, in which India has a key role to play, officials here said.

This is going to be the biggest engagement of the year between the two countries.

"It's an enormously positive signal that the 2+2 dialogue is continuing this year. It will provide a good opportunity to change the current narrative surrounding the bilateral relationship," Anish Goel, a senior fellow at New America and a former senior director at the White House's National Security Council told PTI.

"The past few months, we have been stuck on sanctions, tariffs, and other economic and trade issues where the United States and India don't see eye-to-eye. This dialogue will allow them to focus on the strategic issues that are really the backbone of the partnership," Goel said in response to a question.

Goel expects that key issues such as counterterrorism, cyber security, defence cooperation, and regional security will dominate the dialogue.

Alyssa Ayres from the Council on Foreign Relations and a former State Department official under the previous Obama administration anticipates that discussions about shared concerns in the Indo-Pacific and fresh ideas about what India and the United States can do together should take centre-stage during their talks.

"But I can't help adding that the deteriorating tenor of the economic relationship has made me worried for the first time in years," Ayres told PTI.

"So I hope this backdrop does not overshadow the important and urgent cooperation on strategic ties," Ayres said.

Noting that India-US relations enjoyed relative stability in the first year of the Trump administration, Rick Rossow from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) observed that negativity now dominates the landscape, particularly on economic issues.

"The 2+2 dialogue must find ways to tangibly move our security partnership forward, and energize our security leaders to intervene in our declining economic relationship before we suffer irreparable harm," Rossow said.

"Our leaders must also set in motion a strategy to ensure that new and revisited sanctions programs against Russia and Iran don't disrupt progress in our emerging relationship," he said.

He was referring to Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, signed into law in August 2017 and went into effect in January this year, which mandates the Trump administration to punish entities engaging in significant transaction with the defence or intelligence sectors of Russia.

India, which does business both with Russia, is likely to be hit.   PTI
Brussels, Jun 22 : External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj warned today that all the effort put in by countries to tackle climate change would face a setback if developing nations did not get adequate finances and technologies to

translate their political commitments into tangible initiatives.

Swaraj during her address at the 'EU High Level Event on Climate Change' here, Swaraj said climate change posed significant development challenges, especially for developing countries.

"It can pose a threat to the food and water availability in developing countries, on their nutritional needs, livelihoods, health and well being, and energy security. The response to these challenges must therefore be in terms of solutions that factor in developmental requirements," she said.

She said that the capacity of developing countries to translate their political commitments into tangible initiatives and projects gets constrained by lack of predictable, sustained and adequate finances and technologies.

"The scale of resources required for the ambitious and effective achievement of the Paris Agreement or the 2030 Agenda is enormous. The need for global partnerships, in this regard, is recognised in these processes and is at the core of all solutions offered therein."

"If these major documents are not implemented to reflect equity and principle of Common But Differentiated Responsibility, or fall short of the targets because the developing countries did not receive the requisite support, it would be a setback to all the effort put in by countries in a spirit of togetherness," she said.

She said that the schedule for phasing out of hydrofluorocarbons under the Montreal Protocol could be achieved as it was accompanied with a robust financial package to help developing countries make the transition to cleaner technologies.

"The world needs a similar roadmap for finance and technology if we have to achieve the goals set out in the Convention and its Paris Agreement," Swaraj said.

"In its absence, developing countries will face serious constraints in achieving their existing (Nationally Determined Contributions) NDCs. Any expectations of them to enhance their ambitions should be matched with enhanced support," she added.

Swaraj also recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks at Davos earlier this year in which he referred to terrorism, environmental degradation and climate change as 'issues which have the capacity not only to fracture but also to frustrate many good things which human race has achieved.'

"These challenges are global in nature, and can be tackled only through global cooperation," she said.

Swaraj said India is committed to contributing effectively to the efforts at forging common and united action.

"We are also conscious of the expectations the world has from India and are striving to accomplish the objectives set out in major global agreements," she said.

India has set a target of generating 175 Giga Watts of solar and wind energy by 2022.

"We have undertaken mission mode action to provide electricity to every household and cleaner sources of cooking fuel to poor women," she said.

India would have not only reduced the emission intensity of our GDP by 25 per cent over 2005 levels by 2020, but is also committed to further reduce it by 33 to 35 per cent over 2005 levels by 2030 as part of our Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Swaraj also mentioned other steps like The International Solar Alliance, which iNDIA launched with France, to provide cheap and affordable energy to all.

"We are also optimistic people, who believe in humanity's ability to tide over seemingly insurmountable problems. We will continue to work with all stakeholders for our common well-being," she said.

Swaraj concluded her speech by invoking a prayer from the Vedas that also finds mention at the very beginning of India's Nationally Determined Contributions. PTI

President Kovind, who is in the Surinamese capital Paramaribo on the second leg of his three-nation tour, and Boutersel wearing round neck T-shirts joined dozens of yoga practitioners in this Latin American country to perform the asanas.

"Extremely happy to have participated in #InternationalYogaDay celebrations 14,000 kms away from India at Paramaribo with President Bouterse of Suriname. I thank all the yogis who joined us and made this event truly memorable," President Kovind told the gathering.

This was the first time that heads of two countries together participated in the International Day of Yoga.

The United Nations General Assembly in December 2014 had declared that June 21 would be observed as International Day of Yoga every year.

In Brussels, Swaraj joined the yoga day celebrations at the Yehudi Menuhin Space in the European Parliament.

In Pakistan, the Indian High Commission in Islamabad celebrated the yoga day as a festival of health and well-being. Johannesburg, Jun 4: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has discussed with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa enhanced engagement between the two countries and greater cooperation in areas of skill development, agriculture and information technology.
Swaraj arrived here yesterday on a five-day visit during which she will attend meetings of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and IBSA (India, Brazil, South Africa) -- the two major groupings where India has been playing a key role.
Swaraj met Ramaphosa who recalled his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Commonwealth Summit in London and conveyed his commitment to take the bilateral relations to the next level, according to a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs.
"The enhanced engagement between the two countries, especially in the aftermath of the India-South Africa Business Summit, and greater cooperation in areas such as skill development, agriculture, IT etc were also discussed," it said.

New Delhi, May 28 :  India today said it will continue trading with Iran and Venezuela despite US sanctions against the two countries, asserting that it only recognises UN restrictions.

"We only recognise UN sanctions. We do not recognise any country-specific sanctions," External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said at a press conference.

She made the remarks while responding to a question on whether US sanctions against Iran and Venezuela will hit India's oil imports from the two countries.

The external affairs minister also said that India does not make foreign policy under any pressure from any country.

"We don't make our foreign policy under pressure from other countries," she said.

Earlier this month, the US had pulled out from the landmark Iran nuclear deal of 2015 under which Tehran had agreed to stop its sensitive nuclear activities in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions.

Announcing the decision, President Donald Trump had reimposed sanctions against Iran which were suspended after the nuclear deal was finalised three years back.

The US had also announced tightening sanctions against Venezuela following re-election of President Nicolas Maduro.

Iran is India's third largest oil supplier. Venezuela is also one of the major suppliers of oil to India.

Swaraj also ruled out using cryptocurrency in oil trade with Venezuela saying the Reserve Bank of India had banned it.

Her comments came hours before a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif who is here to seek India's support to salvage the nuclear deal.

There were apprehensions about possible impact of the US decision on India's oil import. However, officials said the US decision to reinstate financial sanctions on Iran would not impact India's oil imports as long as European countries did not follow suit.

China, Russia and several European nations have been trying to salvage the deal.

Iran had struck the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) with the US, the UK, Russia, China, France and Germany after years of negotiations.

In its reaction to Trump's decision, India had said all the parties concerned should engage constructively to resolve the issue peacefully and that Iran's right to peaceful use of nuclear energy must be ensured.

According to the External Affairs Ministry, India-Iran bilateral trade during the 2016-17 fiscal was USD 12.89 billion. India imported USD 10.5 billion worth of goods, mainly crude oil, and exported commodities worth USD 2.4 billion.PTI
