Shillong, Dec 27: Eight legislators, including five Congress legislators, will quit as members of Meghalaya assembly on Friday, National People’s Party Chief Conrad K Sangma said today.
The Congress legislators include Rowell Lyngdoh, Prestone Tynsong, Coming One Ymbon, Sniawbhalang Dhar and Ngaitlang Dhar.
Opposition United Democratic Party legislator, Remington Pyngrope and two Independent members – Stephanson Mukkhim and Hopeful Bamon will also quit as members of the assembly.
“All the eight MLAs have decided to join NPP and contest the upcoming assembly elections on NPP ticket,” he.
Mr. Sangma said their move to join the NPP shows that people of the state are looking for a change.
Moreover, he said that their joining will also boost the NPP image ahead of the assembly polls.
The NPP is an ally of the BJP-led NDA government at the centre. It is also one of the constituents of the North East Democratic Alliance headed by Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had already kick-started the BJP’s campaign. UNI
