Aizawl, Sep 29: The Mizoram unit of the National People's Party (NPP) was formally launched here Saturday by its president Conrad Sangma who is also Meghalaya Chief Minister.

The NPP is a north eastern and tribal-centric party with objectives to ensure that the voice of the region is heard by Delhi, Sangma told.

The party will contest the coming elections to the 40-member Mizoram Assembly due later this year, he said.

"We will fight the elections without forging any pre-poll alliance with other political parties," he said. (PTI)

Jammu, Sept 25: Appealing the people to vote and support Panthers Party in ULB elections, Mr. Harsh Dev Singh JKNPP Chairman and Former Minister today said that it was high time that Dogras identified and acknowledged the services of those who were actually championing the cause of Jammu. He said that neither the national parties nor the Kashmir based parties were the solution for the ills afflicting Jammu region. A regional party alone could meet the aspirations of Jammu and address the local issues of the public, he claimed adding that people were increasingly reposing their faith in Panthers Party and its leadership. He was addressing public meetings at various locations after party candidates filed nominations in various wards of JMC today.

Accusing the BJP of having betrayed the collection sentiment of Dogras, Mr. Singh said that NPP was all prepared to provide a viable alter-native to the people of Jammu region. Those who failed to honour their promise of holiday on 23rd  September, birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh or even rake up the issue in cabinet meeting while in power, could no longer be trusted by the people, said Singh. They had lost the right to represent the Dogras when they failed to get Rasana case probed through CBI and rather joined the chorus with their Kashmir masters describing the agitating Dogras as ‘rapists supporters’. Not only that they succumbed before the separatists and Kashmir centric forces by refusing Dogra Certificate to Jammu Dogras despite the issue forming a part of their election manifesto, said Harsh. While the lion’s share in employment went the Kashmir way during their rule, the BJP leaders were often seen flaunting a consolation prize in the form of negligible share in services for Jammu youth, rued Mr. Singh.

And not only did they surrender the rights and interests of Jammu region but also compromised over the issues of security despite their Jingoistic bullies and ‘zero tolerance’ slogans while in opposition, remarked Singh. He said that release of around 11,000 stone-pelters and declaration of unilateral ceasefire leading to escalation of violence in valley were some of the questions that were irking and agitating the minds of nationalist forces and for which the BJP will have to account for in the days to come.

Mrs. Manju Singh General Secretary said that with peoples’ distrust having exacerbated in BJP and its state leadership in particular, the people were eagerly awaiting to give it a befitting reply in the coming days. She said that Panthers Party had launched an unrelenting crusade against the policies of suppression and oppression being pursued by successive govts with Jammu and it alone could represent the aspirations of this hitherto deprived and incarcerated Dogra land. Panthers alone can galvanize the bruised dignity of Dogras, said Mrs. Singh.

Jammu May, 28: Addressing a huge congregation of NPP workers and friends at New Delhi late last evening Prof. Bhim Singh while remembering 54th years of shocking history when Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru expired, the day Parliament of India was going to meet that day. He reminded his colleagues and friends that he was the student of Aligarh Muslim University and the chief organizer of Students congress. He along with several youth and students leaders prepared a memorandum for the Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and all of them resorted to fast unto death in front of the Parliament that day demanding ‘call back’ of Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah from Pakistan who had gone to Pakistan with the approval of the Indian Prime Minister. Sheikh Abdullah had made highly objectionable statement challenging the integration of J&K with the rest of the country. The students Congress was demanding return of Sheikh Abdullah and condemning his statement in Pakistan.
          The Students Congress decided to resort to hunger strike in front of Parliament, the day, the Parliament was sitting in session. The Parliament was to meet at 11.00 am. Prof. Bhim Singh with a strong team of Students congress and its patrons started hunger strike at 9.00 am in front of the Parliament.  The prominent leaders of the students Congress who joined the hunger strike included Shri Rashpaul Singh, presently a Sr.Advocate in J&K High Court, Shri Shiv Charan Singh (Retd. ZEO), Shri Kamal Gandotra, Shri Asim Shah (late), Shri Suresh Anadi (Late), Shri Raj Sehgal (late), Shri S. Pathak (late), Shri Durga Dass Abrol (late) and many others student leaders from J&K. The Students Congress leaders were demanding call back of Sheikh Abdullah from Pakistan and amendment of Article 370 and Fundamental Rights for all in Jammu and Kashmir.
           Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru could not reach the Parliament house. He was declared dead. Shri Lal Bhadur Shastri the then Union Minister came with folded hands and appealed  to all those who were sitting on protest, hunger strikes in front of Parliament to close their protest and join the funeral procession of the great leader and the first Prime Minister of India, Nehru Ji.
          Prof.Bhim Singh reminded his friends that the hunger strikers joined the funeral procession of the great leader and the first Prime Minister of India.
          Prof. Bhim Singh told his friends that JKNPP was founded in 1982 after 18 years after this sad day. The Panthers Party Chief Patron said that the movement of this National Integration of J&K movement was founded in the sixties with his friends and colleagues in the sixties. He said that this day, 27th of May, 1964 has a very touching relationship in his life. He along with his friends paid rich tributes to the  first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. He told friends in Delhi that he was detained and arrested with the Raj Kumar Sehgal and Mirza Abdul Rashid in Srinagar a few days after the death of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964.

Jammu, May 26: Prof.Bhim Singh, Chief Patron of National Panthers Party congratulated Kashmir Wing of JKNPP which has made a strong appeal to the Governor of J&K to impose Governor Rule in the state in the interest of civil and political rights of the residents of J&K who happened to be citizens of India in accordance with the Constitution of J&K read with the Constitution of India. Constitution of India does express that J&K is integral part of Union of India yet the citizens of India residing in J&K continue to be remained without fundamental rights and civil rights which are enshrined in the Constitution of India.
Prof.Bhim Singh expressed hope that the people of J&K shall be given all fundamental rights incorporated in the Constitution of India so that the Parliament of India directly look after the interest of the residents of J&K. A meeting of executive committee of JKNPP of Kashmir province was held this morning which appealed to the Governor of J&K to impose Governor in J&K which is the only way out to save J&K from further death and destruction. The senior leaders who held an urgent meeting in Kashmir held in Srinagar included M/s. Masood Andrabi (Vice President), Farooq Ahmed Dar (Provincial President), Manjoor Naik & Maqbook Malik (General Secretaries) and several District Presidents.

BJP, Congress, NC, PDP all betrayed the people of borders: Harsh

Jammu, May 24: Expressing immense shock over the loss of property and life caused by the persistent heavy mortar shelling and firing by Pakistan on the forward villages of IB in Kathua, Samba and Jammu districts, a strong contingent of Panther activists staged a massive protest demonstration spearheaded by Mr. Harsh Dev Singh Chairman JKNPP and Mr.Yash Paul Kundal State President Young Panthers at Exhibition Ground Jammu today. While torching the effigy of the BJP, the angry protestors slammed the Central as well as the State government for their despicable apathy and gross failure to provide 5 Marla plots at safer zones to the border residents of Jammu region as promised by both the governments.
Mr. Harsh Dev Singh while addressing the media condemned Pakistan for pounding the forward villages all along the IB with heavy shelling and firing which had thrown the life of the people out of gear. He said that the border residents were living in horrifying atmosphere and the BJP partnered State government had paid no heed to their plight and miseries as of now. He pointed out that the children, women and aged were the worst sufferers of the Pak misadventure who were looking at the administration for an immediate relief and rehabilitation to safer zones. He regretted that severe lack of ambulance and allied health services besides defunct Primary Health Centers in the forward hamlets had led to deaths of the injured people which otherwise could have been prevented by timely intervention. He added that several human lives and livestock had perished during incessant firing and shelling besides heavy damage had been caused to the houses and crops of the local residents. Deeply anguished over the miserable plight of the border dwellers all along the IB in Jammu region, Mr. Singh expressed his resentment against both the Central and State governments for doling promises and assurances to the border residents time and again for their relief and rehabilitation but nothing tangible had been delivered so far. He reiterated his demanded for an immediate allotment of 5 Marla of land for each family at safer zones, special recruitment drives, reservation akin to ALC residents, adequate bunkers for emergency situation, ex-gratia to the family of the person killed in Pak firing and to those injured and employment for the next of kin of the deceased and adequate assessment based compensation for the loss of crops, cattle stock and damaged houses as relief measures for the affected people living in the forward hamlets.
Mr. Harsh Dev Singh wondered that how could BJP Ministers enjoy the loaves of power and keep their ally in good humour when their own people were afflicted with pain, chagrin and outrage. He cautioned the BJP to address the issues of the border residents seriously and stop making their contemptuous mockery by betraying them on false assurances. He asked the BJP to provide the promised relief to them without any delay otherwise the seething anger of the people would throw the Saffron party on the mat only to bite the dust. While lambasting Pakistan for sponsoring terror and creating war like situation in the State, he exhorted the GoI to take a stringent and deterrent action against the belligerent enemy rather than condemning the border skirmishes so that it could be restrained once for all from carrying out further misadventures.
Mr. Yash Paul Kundal raising voice in conformity with the genuine demands of the people living along the IB demanded provision of reservation besides other benefits and privileges for the border dwellers at par with the residents of ALC pertaining to government jobs etc. He regretted that the tall pronouncement of the BJP for conducting Special Recruitment Drive had proven to be mere rhetoric. He demanded that the local youth residing in border areas should be absorbed under Special Recruitment drive for Police, Armed and Paramilitary forces without any delay. The NPP leaders vowed that Panthers party shall stand with the border residents in all odds and circumstances and assured the people that it shall not relent unless all the demands of the people and the affected families in particular were addressed by both the Central and the State governments.

Kohima, May 16: As the Lok Sabha by-election coming closer, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio begin the campaign in Dimapur yesterday for the Peoples Democratic Alliance candidate Tokheho Yepthomi and called upon the people to work collectively and support PDA consensus candidate.
Addressing a well attended PDA campaign launch programme at DDSC stadium in Dimapur, Rio invited the people to be part of the change of the NDPP-led PDA Government. He said the PDA leaders will be campaigning in all 11 districts before the scheduled election on May 28. He urged upon party workers of PDA constituents to ensure a thumping win for the consensus candidate.
He expressed gratitude to PDA partners- BJP, JD (U), NPP and Independent– for unanimously endorsing the NDPP candidate Tokheho Yepthomi as the consensus candidate. He also cited some of the steps taken by the PDA soon after coming to power such as ban on VIP culture, chief guest system and undertaking urgent repair and maintenance of roads.
Rio took a dig at the NPF for crying hoarse at BJP for deciding to form alliance with NDPP and also expressed surprise for branding BJP as “communal, anti-Christian party” after having an alliance with the party (BJP) for the past 15 years.
Defending the BJP party, he said “no Naga has been converted to Hinduism after joining BJP.” He reiterated that BJP was not a religious party, and both NDPP and BJP were political parties working tirelessly for the welfare of the people.
Rio also questioned the credentials of NPF as a regional party since it had allied with Congress in the 90s and then with the BJP from 2003-18 in order to form the government in the state. He asked people to be aware of the political scenario in the country where BJP-led NDA was still in power. In this regard, he said it was important for the state to have its representative with the ruling government.
The chief minister pointed out that two months and six days have passed since the PDA came to power in Nagaland and had already begun the process of fulfilling its campaign promises to achieve certain promises within 100 days of being in office.
However, due to the announcement of Lok Sabha bye-election, he said there have been some hiccups but assured that these will resume with earnestness in fulfilling both these campaign promises including the Common Minimum Programme of the PDA.
Rio also announced that the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) will soon be meeting to deliberate on promoting sports and evolve sports policy within the next 100 days. After every two years, he said there will be Nagaland Olympic Games which will be at the culmination of events of schools and district-wise games besides Special Olympics for the differently abled persons.
He said the differently abled will also be inducted into the NOA and special infrastructures will be constructed where they can actively train themselves in various sports disciplines. Rio also assured that the Dr T Ao Award for sportspersons will be reinstated. Besides this, he also reiterated that as various Naga tribes have festivals every month of the year and hence, it was necessary to have mini Hornbills festivals in collaboration with the respective tribal Hohos. New Delhi, May 14: An emergency meeting of the executive of the Indo-Palestine Friendship society and the members of the working committee of the National Panthers Party (NPP) was held in New Delhi, the capital of India on the aggressive message of the USA against the United Nations’ Resolutions carried by the Security Council from time to time directing the parties concerned to maintain the demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem.
            The urgent conference convened at New Delhi was presided over by Prof. Bhim Singh, Executive Chairman of the Indo-Palestine Friendship Society, Sr. Advocate in the Supreme Court of India and among the old associates of the PLO. Several advocates and political and social activists participated in the meeting to review effects of Israel’s provocative and anti-Palestine decision to establish US Embassy in Jerusalem against the letter and spirit of several resolutions passed in the past by the Security Council which stands for peaceful negotiation to determine the status of the Holy City of Jerusalem. It was United Nations which has stated and affirmed that:
“Any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council, and in this regard, calls upon all States to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions in the Holy City of Jerusalem, pursuant to Resolution 478 (1980) of the Security Council.” All relevant resolutions that include; 242 (1967), 338 (1973), 446 (1979), 452 (1979), 465 (1980), 476 (1980), 478 (1980), 1397 (2002), 1515 (2003), 1850 (2008), and 2334 (2016), needs to be studied because they shall provide a mirror if he happens to go through them today. So that USA changes its mind and withdraws its Embassy from Jerusalem.
            Prof.Bhim Singh who wrote several books on the composite character of the State of Israel, described the decision of Mr. Donald Trump, the President of the United States of America as a threat to world peace and existence of the United Nations itself. It reminds, he said, how the League of Nations was banged by the draconian declaration of Hitler which led to the World War-II. NPP Supremo called President Trump to reconsider this draconian act, withdraw his so-called US Embassy from the Holy City of Jerusalem having regard to the holy land. This act against the Holy City shall not be accepted by his own countrymen except selected Zionists who have forgotten the deadliest history of how thousands of Jew families were destroyed by the act of mindless dictator at that time.
            Prof. Bhim Singh appealed to all the progressive, peace-loving and secular people in the world to give their mind to Donald Trump so that he may be stopped from playing havoc with the world peace. His action against the Holy City of Jerusalem is undesirable, violative of UN Resolutions, against the letter and spirit of the concept of peace as it shall not be accepted even by the majority of Jews who understand the past and present history better than the President of United States of America, Mr. Donald Trump.

Teach lesson who indulge in personal attacks    

New Delhi, May 09: Supremo of J&K National Panthers Party & a distinguished human rights advocate, Prof.Bhim Singh has made a strong appeal to the electorates of Karnataka State to vote a political party contesting Assembly election to ensure that undesirable, unwanted and professional leaders learn a lesson and that polished language and balanced speeches do not convince the electorates and the people in general.
            Prof.Bhim Singh with the team of National Panthers Party had planned to canvass in Karnataka during the Assembly election for a week but he could not make it due to his hospitalization in All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He regretted that he failed to appeal the electorates in Karnataka where he has had an opportunity to interact with the people of Karnataka several times during the governance of Shri D. Devaraj Urs, Shri Gundu Rao, Shri Ram Krishna Hegde and several others in connection of his (NPP) campaign for extension of Fundamental Rights to the State of J&K.
            Prof.Bhim Singh in his appeal to the electorates of Karnataka urged them to expose and defeat all demagogues who have been using undesirable, unwanted and acceptable words during the election campaign no matter which party they belonged to. He regretted the languages which were used in their political campaign by Hon’ble Shri Narendra Modi ji and Hon’ble Congress President, Shri Rahul Gandhi during their campaign for their respective parties in different election rallies in Karnataka. The Hon’ble super bosses should have wasted some of their time in studying the past history and the languages were used by the past leaders during the election campaign. NPP Supremo expressed deep shock on the words and very personal criticism used by both of them against the other. The leaders should have learnt from the past leaders that the respective parties they represented conveyed their respective policy, programmes and objectives each one of them wanted to achieve. The speeches of the senior national leaders particularly in Karnataka have conveyed the message that hit the opposition leader by worse least caring whether those words behoved well. NPP Supremo called on the voters to make a sincere effort to dig out what these leaders have spoken against each other and who had failed to discharge his duty in accordance with the responsible post they hold.
            Prof.Bhim Singh appealed the electorates of Karnataka to defeat and expose the Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi because he failed to use appropriate words and he must be taught a political lesson so that in future every Prime Minister shall understand what language and words he should use whenever he shall speak in his capacity as Prime Minister of India anywhere. Let the people of Karnataka vote anyone, any party or any candidate who appeals to the voters but Bharatiya Janata Party deserves a long vacation particularly in Karnataka. This is a lesson which electorates of Karnataka can teach to the out spoken Prime Minister of India today.

Shillong, Mar 6: National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad Kongkal Sangma and son of former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma, was today sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
Governor Ganga Prasad administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr Sangma and his Ministers at a simple ceremony at Raj Bhavan.
Mr Sangma was given ten-day time to prove his majority on the floor of the House.
Along with Mr Sangma, eleven other Legislators of the newly installed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government – four from the NPP, three from the United Democratic Party, two from the People’s Democratic Front and one each from the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and BJP - were administered the oath of office and secrecy as Cabinet Ministers.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president Amit Shah, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and designated Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio among others witnessed the swearing-in ceremony on the lawns of the Raj Bhavan.
BJP’s key strategist in the Northeast Dr Himanta Bishwa Sarma was also present.
The Ministers, administered the oath of office and secrecy, were Prestone Tynsong (NPP), James Sangma (NPP), A L Hek (BJP), Sniawbhalang Dhar (NPP), Comingone Ymbon (NPP), Metbah Lyngdoh (UDP), Lakmen Rymbui (UDP), Kyrmen Shylla (UDP), Banteidor Lyngdoh (PDF), Hamlet Dohling (PDF) and Samlinv Malngiang (HSPDP).
Admitting that heading a coalition government a “challenging task”, Mr Sangma appealed to all the members of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance to work together as a team to ensure that Meghalaya reached new heights.
“The real challenge and the real work starts today. All MLAs of different political parties must work and in that we may face several challenges, but surely we will become successful, ” he told reporters.
He said, “Coalition will always face the challenges and there is no doubt about it. If we say there is no challenge then we are running away from the truth. We have to face those challenges. As a coalition partner we need to communicate and respect each other, ” Mr Sangma said.

Shillong, Mar 6: The NPP leader Conrad Sangma was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Meghalaya on Tuesday here.
State Governor Ganga Prasad administered the oaths of office and secrecy to the new ministers - which included members from BJP and the regional parties like UDP, HSPDP and PDF besides NPP.
Son of former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma, Conrad is at present Lok Sabha member from Tura and will have to get elected to the state legislature within next six months.
The swearing-in of the new ministry marks the end of Congress rule in the state.
With Tuesday's swearing in, the Congress is now left with power only in the states of Punjab, Mizoram and poll-bound Karnataka.
As part of power sharing formula, UDP leader and former chief minister Donkupar Roy is likely to
be the new Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. UNI

In Ampati Assembly constituency, the veteran Congress leader won by a huge margin of 8104 by defeating BJP’s Bakul Chandra Hajong.
He had won from this constituency by a margin of 9096 votes in 2013 Assembly polls.
In Songsak constituency, the Chief Minister won the seat by a margin of 1830 votes.
Dr Sangma, polled 10274 votes, while National People’s Party (NPP) candidate ND Shira got 8444 votes. UNI

New Delhi/Shillong, Mar 3: The NPP founded by P A Sangma has emerged a key player in the corridors of power in Congress-ruled Meghalaya even as Agatha Sangma, daughter of former Lok Sabha Speaker, has established early leads in South Tura assembly segment.
Notwithstanding the fact that NPP - now being led by Lok Sabha MP and son of P A Sangma Conrad is all set to wrest power in alliance with BJP and other regional players, former Union Minister Agatha Sangma was leading ahead of BJP nominee Billykid A Sangma by a modest margin of 274 votes only.
Though alliance in Manipur and in the centre, in Meghalaya, BJP and NPP fought against each other.
In North Tura also NPP nominee Thomas A Sangma could establish comfortable lead against Noverfield R Marak of Congress by a convincing margin of 2041 votes.
The Congress has won 9 seats and is leading in 11 more but NPP was leading in 16 and won three seats so far.
BJP which put up 47 candidates was leading in two but regional players like UDP, HSPDP and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement also did well and this will in the ultimate upset Congress efforts to retain power in the hilly state.
Senior Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Ahmed Patel left for Meghalaya from Delhi on Saturday to explore possibilities of tie ups with independents and others in the state in the eventuality of a hung assembly. 
According to results and trends so far, while two Independents have already won, two are leading in respective segments.
In the 60-member assembly, the magic number to form government is 31. 
Counting of votes began at 8 am for 59 seats as election was countermanded in Williamnagar of Meghalaya following killing of NCP candidate on February 18.

Shillong, Tura, Mar 21: The ruling Congress on Saturday opened its account after Information and Technology Minister Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh has been declared elected East Shillong constituency by a huge margin of 6074 votes.
The Congres is leading in 20 assembly seats with Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is leading from both the Assembly constituency- Ampati and Songsak. 
Dr. Sangma is set to return for the sixth consecutive time from Ampati constituency, is leading by a margin of 2200 votes. While in Songsak, he is leading by 1830 by a margin of votes against his nearest rival Nihim D.Shira of the National People’s Party. 
However, Home Minister and veteran Congress leader Horju Donkupar Roy Lyngdoh has been in a triangular contest with Hill State People’s Democratic Party legislator Samlin Malngiang won by 622 votes.
The National People’s Party (NPP) is leading 16 Assembly constituencies out of the 59 seats, for which voting was held on February 27.
Former Union Minister Agatha K Sangma is leading and former Congress minister Prestone Tynsong is leading from South Tura and Pynursla assembly constituency respectively.
The BJP which is contesting in 47 assembly seats, is leading five seats with prominent candidates Alexander Laloo Hek , Sanbor Shullai leading in Pynthorumkhrah and South Shillong seat.

New Delhi, Mar 3: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday said that the trends suggest that there is a "new direction" in northeast and this will have impact in national politics also.
"In Meghalaya, we will have requisite numbers to form a non-Congress government with the support of NPP and UDP," Mr Rijiju told reporters.
He said both National Peoples Party (NPP) of Conrad Sangma and United Democratic Party (UDP) are already "partners of BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance" and therefore their support to BJP is possible.
On Nagaland, he said National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP)-BJP will be able to form government. He also confirmed that the NPF, which has been BJP ally from 2003 but parted ways in the run up to the polls, has also started moving back to the saffron party.
NPF has now started reaching out to the ruling dispensation in the Centre.
NPF sources said the party is not against "realigning with BJP" as it wants a congenial atmosphere for the "ongoing political dialogue" In the run-up to the recently-concluded Nagaland assembly elections, the BJP and the NPF were engaged in a vitriolic verbal war. 
The NPF’s chief, Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu, had even declared the 2018 Nagaland assembly elections as a choice between ‘outsiders’ and ‘Naga identity’ while asking voters not to ‘gamble with their faith, culture and identity.’
On the other hand, the BJP has also attacked NPF reminding it of the 15-year alliance that existed between the two parties prior to the 2018 Nagaland assembly elections.
In Nagaland, the BJP parted ways with its two-decade old partner NPF and chose to ally with newly floated NDPP.
Former Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio of NDPP is now expected to lead the new government if the results favour the NDPP-BJP alliance. UNI

Tura, Mar 3: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma was leading in both the Assembly constituency – Ampati and Songsak – in the first round of counting of votes.
In Ampati assembly constituency, Dr Sangma is leading by 400 in a straight contest against BJP candidate Bakul Hajong, while in Songsak, he was leading by 1352 votes against National People’s Party candidate Nihim D.Shira.
Meanwhile, the ruling Congress is leading in 14 seats, NPP in 6, United Democratic Party and People;’s Democratic Front in 4 seats each.

New Delhi, Mar 3: The BJP on Saturday welcomed the early election trends of vote count from Northeastern states with the saffron party doing well in CPI-M citadel Tripura.
Senior BJP leader Ram Madhav exuded confidence that the BJP will be able to form government in Tripura and its alliance partners from national polity NPP is emerging an important player in the corridors of power in Meghalaya.
In Tripura, while BJP is doing well, the story of CPI-M in 'red fortress' is far from over.
According to trends available so far, the CPI-M was leading in 29 in the 60-member assembly and if the trends
continue, the Marxists seemed to be making headway in retaining their hold.
"The Modi blitzkrieg will fail in Tripura. The countdown for 2019 will begin," remarked CPI-M leader Bijan Dhar.
The incumbent Chief Minister Manik Sarkar is in office since 1998 and during the high-profile campaign, all throughout his party was solely banking on what BJP leaders say - the "fading charishma" of Manik Sarkar.
Nearly 80 per cent of the state's 37 lakh people are Bengali-speaking Hindus, mostly migrated from Bangladesh. Tribals, mostly Christians, for less than a third of the state's population. BJP had allied with a tribal-based outfit IPFT in Tripura - that is bordered on three sides by Bangladesh.
The Congress party is likely to emerge as single largest party with the trends giving them 20 seats so far in the 60-member assembly.
While BJP is maintaining lead in six seats, NPP of Conrad Sangma is leading in 12. But importantly for Meghalaya, regional parties like HSPDP and UDP are also doing well.
The personal magnetism of Congress Chief Minister Mukul Sangma that came in focus in this year's elections is key to future power politics in Meghalaya.
In fact, the Congress, which has been losing ground in every election since last three years, is hoping that Mr Sangma would play a 'savior' and help the grand party retain its hold. 
Even as many tribal Christian leaders suspect some voters have "turned towards" the pro-Hindu BJP in the Christian-majority state, political observers and the exit polls generally suggest that Conrad Sangma-led NPP would do well and emerge a key player in the corridors of power.

Shillong, Feb 23: Parties like BJP, National People's Party (NPP), United Democratic Party (UDP) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have mentioned the mining issue in its 'manifesto' and 'documents' to woo the voters in the poll-bound Meghalaya.
The BJP which is leaving no stone unturned to oust the ruling Congress government led by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma in its "vision document" promised to put back on the track the coal mining issue in 180 days if voted to power.
The party also assured to promote mining of mineral resources with a sense of responsibility towards the protection of the environment and regenaration of forests.
The National People's Party (NPP) led by Conrad Sangma in its 'people's document' which was released on Thursday, promised that the party will come up with an appropriate Mining Policy to uphold the interests of the people. 
It assured to work towards finding amicable and acceptable solutions to the current ban on major and minor minerals including coal.
NPP chief Conrad Sangma had attacked the Congress party on mining issue, and alleged that Mukul Sangma government did not prepare policy in this matter.
"If you want mining to re-open in Meghalaya, vote for NPP. We will find a solution in this matter," Mr Sangma assured people at a rally in Jowai.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) vowed to bring a mining policy with the consent of the people.
It also proposed to use method of scientic mining.
Regional party like United Democratic Party (UDP) has promised to weigh this issue from the prespectives of people's economy, and the vital duty of protection of environment if voted to power.
The ruling Congress party, however, has not released its manifesto so far despite only few days are left for the polls.
The polling for the ensuing Assembly polls is scheduled to be held on February 27, and results will be announced on March 3. UNI

Kohima/Agartala, Feb 21: The on-going elections in northeastern states among other things are also playing crucial role in deciding about the future of Congress party - which once had a commanding position in the entire region.
But the going has been more than tough for the grand old party, which is struggling hard to retain power in Meghalaya, and which has simply failed to put up a befitting fight in Nagalanad and Tripura.
"In the case of Nagaland, it is largely a case of missed opportunity. The Congress unit simply lacked the fighting instinct. Between 2016 and 2017, the regional NPF-led coalition government changed Chief Ministers thrice. The BJP was part of the coalition. In fact, the NPF split even at organisational level and yet Congress could not take the advantage," says Peang Kithan, a former Congress man from Wokha remote district. 
In February 27 elections, the Congress fielded only 19 candidates in the 60-member House.
The pradesh Congress tried to justify this by issuing a statement and said: "The decision is aimed at stopping the BJP and its alliance partner from compromising the rights of our people and our way of life". 
The Congress party also issued a statement saying it has directed its rank and file to back "secular party candidates to save the people from sinking in the "Hindutva quicksand". 
However, this was hardly convincing as most if not all BJP candidates are Naga Christians only. BJP is contesting on 20 seats in alliance with a newly floated NDPP but Congress – which was a dominant force – is friendless.
In 2013, the Congress tally in 60-member House was eight and at later stage all the members had quit the party. "The Congress-free state legislative assembly came in Nagaland," remarks Bishnu Bhattacharjee, NPF Minority Wing leader.
However, the blame game has started and a section of party leaders have heaped all blames on AICC in-charge north east, C P Joshi. The general refrain was about "high command not providing adequate funds".
Bringing down the number of candidates actually show the "existential crisis" as hardly there was clamour for tickets.
Local workers also blame state unit president K Therie for running an "one-man show" and has unable to carry a team along with him.
The Congress showing lack of enthusiasm in fighting it out has also opened rooms for other parties to try establish their toehold. Even JD(U) is seeking to grow and so is Conrad Sangma’s NPP.
The Congress really faces – do or die situation in Nagaland where it lost power in 2003 after 10 years of continued rule from 1993. 
Similar to Nagaland, the prospect of Congress revival in Tripura also looked remote as the grand old party is generally taken as a ‘B Team’ of CPI(M) and has been lacking in confidence and perhaps the 'will' to fight the Leftists.
The general refrain among Congress leaders and even Congress supporters is – the Congress High Command has let down the Tripura unit as the party did not show enough interests to fight the communists.
"No amount of ground work and fight by footsoldiers in the state can help revive the party if the central leaders do not give their best," says a Congress leader in Agartala. The general complaint among Congress leaders and also those who quit Congress to join BJP is: Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi did not come to campaign for the party candidates in 2013 despite assurances given to the state leaders.
"For the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh even the stage was set up in Ambasa in Dhalai district but he did not come," says Manoj Kanti Deb, a former Congress legislator and now BJP candidate from Kamalpur.
The result of such frustrating situation was that the Congress leaders – rank and file - shifted to the BJP in 2016 and 2017 and thus helped saffron party turn into a fighting force in Tripura.
Tapash Dey, senior Congress leader in Tripura, denies the high command has "neglected" the state unit. In fact, he blames the former state unit leadership like Sudip Roy Barman for letting down the party.
"It will be erroneous to say Congress can be written off in Tripura. We remain the chief anti-Left party in Tripura," he said trying to dismiss BJP emerging as a major force in the state.
In the given situations in poll-bound states, Meghalaya is the only state where Congress is in strong position and can retain power - as a saving grace to the legacy of the grand old party. 
Mukul Sangma has served as Chief Minister for quite some time but is facing anti incumbency mood and also 'corruption charges'. 
However, the local Congress workers protest the manner in the February 27 elections, Mukul Sangma has pushed his family members and relatives into the electoral contests.
In the Garo Hills, Mr Sangma's native region, even a few Church leaders disapprove the manner he has tried to promote his relatives and associates in six constituencies. 
"Actually Mukul is building up a mini camp of relatives and personal loyalists," says NPP leader Vinita Sangma.
The Chief Minister is himself contesting from two assembly segments Ampati and Songsak. His wife and sitting MLA Dikkanchi D Shira is seeking re-election from Mahendraganj. 
Chief Minister's brother and Excise Minister Zenith Sangma has been fielded from Rangsakona. Zenith's wife Sadhiarani Sangma is Congress nominee from Gambegre.
Limison D Sangma, a known Chief Minister loyalist, has been fielded from Raksamgre while another loyalist Jimmy D Sangma will be contesting on Congress ticket from Tikrikala.
Similarly, Mukul has allegedly ensured that his loyalist Clement Marak is also Congress candidate from Selsela. UNI
