Bandipora, Dec 13: Enough stock of essential commodities was available in the border area of
Gurez, which remained cut off from the district headquarters following heavy
snowfall.
The border area, which is surrounded by Pakistan-occupied
Kashmir (PoK) from three sides, remained cut off from the Kashmir valley for
about six winter months due to snowfall.
The authorities have already stocked essentials in Gurez and other areas, which also remained cut off during winter months.
An official spokesman said on Wednesday that 20,706 quintals of rice, 5,325 quintals of atta, 1,033 quintals of sugar, 1.36 lakh liter kerosene oil and 6,500 LPG cylinders have already been dumped in Gurez sub-division which will cater to the requirements of the area till June next.
He said that 13 snow clearance machines, including six in Gurez sub-division are presently available in the district for snow clearance operations.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Bandipora, has issued weather advisory, in the aftermath of rains and snowfall in the district. He asked locals in border towns of Gurez and Tulail areas not to venture in avalanche prone areas till the weather conditions become favourable. However, he said, in case of any emergency, extra precautions should be taken to avoid any accident.
The DC also asked the Sub District Magistrate (SDM) Gurez to take all precautionary measures in coordination with the departments concerned for safeguard of the general public. UNI
