Srinagar, Dec 25: Chill has intensified as the mercury further dipped and settled several degrees below sub-zero owing to clear skies in Kashmir, where the Sun came out this afternoon bringing some respite for the people during the day.
The summer capital, Srinagar, recorded the coldest night of the season so far after the mercury plunged over 2 degrees from Sunday and settled at minus 4.2 degree. 
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that the weather will mainly be dry during the next 24 hours in the state, which could result in further dip in the temperature.
Even though there was an improvement of over a degree from Sunday in the night temperature, Leh in Ladakh region was the coldest in the region at minus 8.1 degree.
The night temperature at border town of Kargil also witnessed an improvement of about 4 degrees and settled at minus 7.2 degree, second coldest place in the region.
He said skies will be partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Kashmir, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around a degree and minus 10 degree, respectively.
Due to clear sky during the night, the minimum temperature recorded more than two degree drop against Sunday and settled at minus 4.2 degree, two notches below normal in Srinagar, where the water bodies had partially frozen near banks early this morning. Surface transport was badly affected in the city due to dense fog since early this morning though flights operated as per schedule from Srinagar international airport.
However, as the day progressed the Sun came out bringing some respite from the day chill in Srinagar, where maximum temperature recorded on Sunday was 2 degree below normal.
The spokesperson told UNI that skies will be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 10 degree and minus 3 degree, respectively.
The night temperature at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where ski slopes are already under several feet of snow, surged and settled at minus 5.5 degree, against minus 5.6 degree recorded on Sunday. The night temperature at Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, was slightly below normal.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, dipped about 3 degree and settled at minus 6.5 degree, about 3 degree below normal.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag dipped and settled at minus 3.6 degree, 3.4 degree and minus 2.9 degree, respectively. UNI
