Srinagar, Dec 15: Only one-way traffic will continue to ply till further orders on the
300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road connecting Kashmir
valley with the rest of the country.
Today traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no vehicle,
including those of security forces, would be allowed from opposite direction, a
traffic police official told UNI on Friday.
However, the historic Mughal road and highway, linking Ladakh with Kashmir remained close.
Traffic on the Kashmir highway was suspended on Monday afternoon following snowfall on this side of the Jawahar tunnel and landslides, triggered by rain, between Ramban and Ramsu. One-way traffic was restored only yesterday and all vehicles stranded on other side of the Jawahar tunnel and other places were cleared yesterday.
Today vehicles, mostly empty trucks, oil tankers and carrying fruits, left for Jammu this morning. No vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction as the road is still very narrow and damaged at some places where only one-way vehicle could pass. This measure has been taken to avoid any traffic jam and accident besides allow repair and widening of the road.
Traffic on the 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained closed for the fifth day today as about three to four feet of snow had accumulated at several places. Officials said that sophisticated machines were pressed into service and snow was cleared on the road from Shopian to Heerpora on this side of the Pir-ki-Gali. UNI
