New Delhi, Dec 15: Shortly after Congress president Sonia Gandhi when asked about her role
following Rahul Gandhi’s elevation as party president, said her job was to
retire, AICC media incharge Randeep Singh Surjewala on Friday clarified that Ms
Gandhi had only retired as Congress president and not from politics.
'Would sincerely request friends in the media to
not rely upon innuendos. Ms Gandhi has retired as President of Indian National Congress and not
from politics.
Her blessings, wisdom and innate commitment to Congress ideology shall always be our guiding light,' Mr Surjewala said in a statement.
The statement came soon after Ms Gandhi, asked about her role after the elevation of Mr Gandhi as party president, said her job was now to retire.
"My role now is to retire," Ms Gandhi told reporters here.
The statement comes a day ahead of Mr Gandhi’s formal elevation to the top post in the Congress party.
Mr Gandhi, who is the sixth member from the Nehru Gandhi family to assume the top post in the party, was on December 11 announced elected unopposed to the post of party president as he was the only candidate in the fray after the end of the deadline for withdrawal of nominations. UNI
