New Delhi, Jan 19: The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday said the Election Commission has not given them a fair chance to hear their position before sending recommendations to President Ram Nath Kovind in the 'office of profit' case against its 20 MLAs.
Party spokesperson and Greater Kailash MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj told a press conference that the poll watchdog has not given any chance to their legislators. “There are many more inquiries in the world, in their rule it is written that those who are accused will also get the chance to keep their word. The EC has not given us any chance to present our legislators today.”
Mr Bhardwaj said when there is no gain in the post of profit, it is wrong to remove the elected representatives of the public on the charge of profit. “There are 1 crore people in the legislative assemblies of 20 MLAs. If any of these people come and say that these MLAs have taken a bungalow and a car, then it comes under moral responsibility.”
Alleging that Chief Election Commissioner A K Joti was behind the whole episode, he said when the Delhi High Court had said that these people were not Parliamentary Secretaries then how can the Commission check on them.
“The EC is paying the debt of Modi (Prime Minister) by placing a constitutional institution like EC.”
He added: "January 23 is CEC Jyoti Sahab's birthday. On that day he will be 65 years old, after 65 years he will not be the CEC. Three people had heard this case -- 2 people have separated themselves.”
The Greater Kailash MLA said news headlines were created only on the basis of sources. There was no official confirmation in the news till now.
Earlier in the day, sources said the Election Commission sent to the President its recommendations on the 'office of profit' case.
Though EC officials declined to reveal the recommendations, sources said at the marathon meeting held on Friday, the poll panel had recommended to the President the disqualification of the AAP MLAs.
On August 29, the EC had completed hearing in the case and reserved its decision on the matter. UNI
