Hyderabad, Feb 16: The visiting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani offered prayers at the more than 400-year-old Mecca Masjid near the historic Charminar, here on Friday afternoon.
Mr Rouhani was the first Iranian President to offer prayers at Mecca Masjid, which has been a symbol of communal harmony for centuries. He also addressed the congregation after the Friday prayers.
The construction work on Mecca masjid was started during 1616-17 by a Shia ruler and the mosque was completed by a Sunni ruler. The contractor who supervised minute details of the construction was a Hindu.
Another interesting feature is all sects of Muslims offer prayers at the Mecca Masjid which is also a popular tourist attraction and most of the tourists are Hindus.
French traveler Tavernier ,who visited the mosque during the Qutub Shahi period, described the Mecca Masjid as a wonderful work of architecture and a marvellous edifice in the whole of Asia.
It may be mentioned that Hyderabad's history, heritage, culture, arts, crafts, cuisine, clothing and customs are influenced mostly by Iran. Hyderabad was planned on the model of Iranian city of Isfahan.
Police made tight security in areas adjacent to the mosque and imposed traffic curbs in view of the Iranian President's visit.
Dr Rouhani will also visit the world famous Salarjung museum and meet a select group of Iranian residents of the city before he leaves for Delhi this evening. UNI
