Shillong, Feb 6: As Meghalaya is heading towards Assembly polls, people here said that it would
be very difficult for the ruling Congress government to retain its position.
They, however, believe that it won't be a
cakewalk for other parties including National Peoples Party (NPP) and BJP to
oust the Congress as it has a stronghold in Meghalaya.
"Looking at the present political scenario of Meghalaya, Congress might not come to power. NPP along with BJP have a chance," said Vinod Kumar Biswa, an advocate by profession.
He also said that Congress being one the oldest party ruling over longtime has a stronghold in Meghalaya which is an advantage for the party as compared to BJP.
However, an old age voter from North Shillong constituency said,"It is difficult to defeat Congress in Meghalaya".
According to him, Congress has its own vote bank, and a few per cent of people might cast votes to other parties.
A government security personnel on condition of anonymity said, "NPP's strenght is too much and there is a chance that it would emerge as the single largest party and form coalition Government. But it is not very easy to defeat Congress."
"BJP will gain as there is a infighting in Congress. This is an advantage for the party," he said.
A woman, who asked not to be named, said that there will be a change in Meghalaya this time as people are fed up of the Mukul Sangma Government.
"This time regional parties will form a coalition government," she asserted.
Babit, a boxing player, said, "we want a change as there is no development in the state."
Telling his woe's, Mr Babit said,"whenever I go out for tournament, I have to spent from my own. There should be a proper sports policy in the state to promote player like me."
"Congress has become weak. But NPP, BJP or other parties won't be able to oust Congress," a government employee said.
The polling for the ensuing Assembly polls is slated to be held on February 27. The results will be out on March 3. UNI
