Agartala/Kailashahar, Feb 16: The campaigning for what is being billed as the first direct electoral contest between the right wing BJP and the communists for the February 18 Tripura polls will come to an end on Friday afternoon.
On the last day of campaigning, Congress president Rahul Gandhi is likely to address an election rally at Kailashahar in Unakoti district.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had campaigned in this constituency during his visit on February 8.
The Tripura pradesh Congress chief Birajit Sinha is the sitting MLA from Kailashahar town which has a sizeable Muslim electorate. Seeking re-election, Mr Sinha is locked in a triangular contest against CPI (M) nominee Mohaswar Ali and BJP candidate Nitish Dey, also a former Marxist leader.
Birajit Sinha had won the key seat in 2013 by a slender margin of 485 votes against CPI (M) candidate Mohaswar Ali.
In many constituencies, political observers suggest the Congress candidates may not do too well for themselves but eat into anti-Left vote and would possibly help the CPI-M nominees.
The CPI-M is a strong force in this northeastern state and the incumbent Chief Minister Manik Sarkar is in office since 1998.
In his two election rallies - one at Agartala and the other at Santirbazar, Prime Minister Modi described both the CPI-M and the Congress as "same" and also alleged that both the parties are only indulging in mock fight to help the CPI-M candidates.
The BJP, which had a mere 1.57 per cent share of votes in 2013, has emerged as a key contender against CPI-M in several seats.
While the polling will be held on February 18, Sunday, the counting of the votes will be held on March 3.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar addressed several rallies in last few days. Among others senior CPI-M leader Brinda Karat also campaigned for the Left candidates.
The CPI-M leader have termed BJP's alliance with tribal based party IPFT as an 'unholy alliance' with Chief Minister alleging that the IPFT had earlier pitched hard for carving out a separate state for tribals. UNI
