Agartala, Feb 21: The CPI-M has asked election commission of India to match the VVPAT slips with
the vote counts on EVMs in the13 constituencies where voting process was
delayed due to repeated sangs in the machines on February 18 assembly polls.
Veteran CPI (M) leader and member of the Central Secretariat
of CPI (M) Nilotpal Basu met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Om Prakash
Rawat on Tuesday in New Delhi and said that the malfunctioning of EVM and VVPAT
was considerably high in Chief Minister’s constituency Dhanpur and in the most
prestigious Banamalipur where BJP president Biplab Kumar Deb contested the
elections.
Apart from that, similar problems were reported from Simna, Panisagar, Dharmanagar, Takarjala, Radhakishorpur, Matabari, Bagma, Asharambari, Mohonpur, Mandaibazar and Suryamaninagar constituencies, which left the voters wondering how the machines malfunctioned despite ECI'S claims of serious precautions.
The memorandum indicated the attempts of manipulation of election and alleged that there were failure of the entire apparatus of control unit, ballot unit and VVPAT in large number of booths. Out of 3174 polling booths of 59 constituencies, EVMs had developed technical snags in 519 booths which was really unusual.
The memorandum also alleged that some ECL engineers opened all the ballot units of Panisagar assembly constituency, 12 units of Dharmanagar and 3 units of Jubrajnagar constituencies in absence of any political party representatives on the previous night of election.
“This has created mystery because, after setting of candidates in the ballot unit in Returning officer’s office, no one has the authority to open the machines. It is still mystery what did the engineers do to the machines,” it mentioned adding that in spite of the direction of election commission, the outsiders mostly from Assam, West Bengal and from some Hindi-speaking states had remained in Tripura on the poll day.
Initially, CPI-M polling agents were prevented from entering booths, and afterwards, a good number of voters were prevented from going to cast their vote. The party symbol of CPi-M in EVM was kept covered in some booths for a considerable time and polling agents were forcibly driven out of the booths, the memorandum alleged seeking action from ECI. UNI
