New Delhi, Mar 7: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday sternly cautioned its workers in Tamil
Nadu and Tripura against violence or "destruction" of any statue.
Any person associated with such acts will face severe action
from the party, BJP national president Amit Shah tweeted.
"I have spoken to the party units in both Tamil Nadu and Tripura. Any person associated with the BJP found to be involved with destroying any statue will face severe action from the party," Mr Shah stated.
Amid reports of vandalism from Belonia area in South Tripura where a statue of Vladimir Lenin was brought down, BJP leader Ram Madhav in a tweet said: "Communists indulging in false propaganda about violence in Tripura. Not a single CPI-M leader is injured or in hospital. Contrary several BJP leaders in hospital with injuries".
According to reports, two men were held in Vellore for allegedly vandalising a Periyar statue on Tuesday. Police later said the arrested men were drunk. The defacement came hours after Tamil Nadu BJP leader H Raja said statues of Dravidian icon E V Ramasamy Periyar 'will be brought down.'
The Communist Party of India-Marxist on Tuesday alleged that BJP, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Governor of Tripura, Tathagata Roy, were inciting violence in the state. UNI
