New Delhi/Agartala, Mar
7: Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strongly condemned the
reported incidents of vandalism in certain parts of Tripura, where the
communists lost power to BJP in recently held elections, state Governor
Tathagata Roy on Wednesday said "concerted and motivated campaign" is
on to suggest that "mayhem" has broken out in the state.
"From the telephone calls I receive, it appears that a
concerted and motivated campaign is afoot to spread a canard that murder and
mayhem have broken out in Tripura. Nonsense!," The Governor tweeted on
Wednesday morning.
He said: "Even the uprooting of the statue (of Vladimir Lenin) has not precipitated any breach of peace".
In another missive in the micro blogging site, the Governor wrote: "I am surprised so many people have no appreciation of the Law of the Land even after I have cited provisions of the Indian Penal Code to them! Ignorance of the Law is dangerous!"
He also tweeted saying: "I am advised that pulling down statues (Lenin's or anyone else's) unless done by lawfully empowered authorities, qualify as 'Mischief' under Indian Penal Code. They are bailable and non-cognizable offences. Trying to blow them up to something like rioting or murder is unwarranted".
Prime Minister Modi spoke to Home Minister Rajnath Singh also and expressed his strong disapproval of such incidents.
'Incidents of toppling of statues have been reported from certain parts of the country. The Prime Minister spoke to Home Minister Rajnath Singh in this regard and expressed his strong disapproval of such incidents,' an official release said.
According to government sources, the Ministry of Home Affairs has taken serious note of such incidents of vandalism and asked the states to take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents. UNI
