Chennai, Mar 10: Tamil Nadu Deptuy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Saturday said the state
government was determined on its stand to constitute the Cauvery Water
Management Board (CMB) and the Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee (CWRC) within
six weeks as per the orders of the Supreme Court, even as the Opposition DMK
demanded convening of a special Assembly session before the budget to discuss
the issue.
Talking to newsmen at the airport here, Mr
Panneerselvam said during Friday's meeting convened by the Union Water Resources
Ministry at New Delhi, the state government has insisted the Centre on the
urgent need to constitute the CMB and CWRC.
He said the State government would conduct the local body poll soon after receipt of the court verdict on the matter.
Meanwhile, DMK Working President and Leader of the Opposition M K Stalin urged the State government to convene a special session of the State Assembly before the Budget session (scheduled to commence on March 15) to discuss the Cauvery issue.
Accusing the Centre of neglecting the state's rights on the issue with an eye on the ensuing Assembly poll in Karnataka, Mr Stalin, in a letter to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, termed as an 'eyewash', the Secretaries-level meeting held at New Delhi on Friday.
He alleged that the Centre was adopting a step-motherly attitude towards Tamil Nadu on the crucial issue concerning the livelihood of the farmers in delta districts in view of the ensuing poll in Karnataka.
Mr Stalin said the Centre has hurt the sentiments of Tamil Nadu and the Prime Minister allegedly refusing appointment to meet an all-party delegation as per the decision taken at all party meeting which went against the principles of federalism.
Pointing out that three weeks had passed since the Apex court delivered its verdict directing the Centre to set up the CMB and the CWRC, he said the failure to set up these bodies was violative of the Court order and would also tantamount to attract contempt of court.
He also sought to know whether the Chief Secretary, during yesterday's meeting, opposed the Union Water Resources Ministry Secretary's remarks that setting up of the CMB was not mentioned in the Supreme Court order, while questioning the Chief Minister's silence on the 'wrong' information provided by the Union Secretary.
Stating that there was an urgent need to set up the CMB and the CWRC as per the court order, Mr Stalin said with a view to exert pressure on the Centre and to protect the livelihood of the farmers a special session of the Assembly should be convened before the budget session to condemn the Centre for its delay on setting up the CMB and the CWRC.
