Vasco, Goa, Mar 19: Rear Admiral M A Hampiholi, Flag Officer Commanding, Western Fleet, along with Rear Admiral Didier Piaton, Joint Commander of the French Naval Forces deployed in the Indian Ocean and of the French Joint Forces stationed in the UAE, kick started Phase I of Varuna 18, Indo-French Naval Exercise, Onboard INS Mumbai at Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) here on Monday.
According to a statement from Navy here, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the strategic partnership between the India and France, the Indian Navy welcomed Rear Admiral Didier Piaton, Joint Commander of the French Naval Forces deployed in the Indian Ocean and of the French Joint Forces stationed in the UAE to Varuna 18 as well as the French Submarine, which have arrived in Goa for participation in Phase I of the exercise.
The phase I of Varuna 18, which was kick-started on Monday, would complete on March 24 while the next two phases would be spread over April and May 2018 and would be held off Chennai and La Reunion Island respectively. The Indian and French Navies have been conducting bilateral maritime exercises since May 1993, which were formally given the evocative title Varuna in 2001. Till date, exercise Varuna has been held 15 times and this series of exercise has evolved
from basic interoperability exercise to progressively more complex facets of naval operations. The theme for Varuna 15 was Naval Aviation and the exercise saw participation of the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and the Indian aircraft carrier Viraat, among others.
In 2017, Varuna was conducted in three sea areas in the European waters. This year too Varuna 18 would be conducted in three sea areas-- the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and South Western Indian Ocean. The first phase being conducted in the Arabian Sea would see participation of French Submarine and frigate Jean de Vienne from the French side. The Indian Naval participation would include the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Destroyer Mumbai, frigate Trikand with their internal helicopters.
