New Delhi, Mar 21: Proceedings in the Rajya Sabha remained deadlocked on Wednesday with the House
being adjourned for the day within minutes of the start of the day's session.
The trouble started as soon as papers were tabled in the
House when determined Andhra and Tamil Nadu MPs entered the Well raising their
demands of special category status for Andhra Pradesh and Cauvery Management
Board. They were joined by the Congress MPs holding banners and placards and
raising slogans.
'What is happening? Are we so helpless? Is this Parliament or something else?' the visibly displeased Chairperson asked the Opposition MPs who continued to shout slogans.
As Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu asked why the agitated members did not give notice for discussion on the issues they wanted to take up, Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said the Congress wanted to give notice on the anti-SC/ST Act and the statement made by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in the House yesterday which contradicted a statement given by her last year.
However, the ruckus continued despite Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel insisting that the House be allowed to function as several important legislation, including the Gratuity Amendment Bill needed to be taken up.
He assured that the Government was ready for a discussion. UNI
