The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day Wednesday following noisy protests by AIADMK and YSR Congress members demanding protection of Cauvery Delta farmers and special status for Andhra Pradesh.


New Delhi, Dec 12 (PTI) The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day Wednesday following noisy protests by AIADMK and YSR Congress members demanding protection of Cauvery Delta farmers and special status for Andhra Pradesh.

Amid the protests which continued after the House reconvened at 2 PM post two adjournments, the Upper House passed the National Trust for Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities (Amendment) Bill, 2018 after a brief discussion.

The proposed amendments entail fixing the term of the Chairperson of the National Trust for Welfare of Persons with Autism and other Disabilities.

Moving the bill for consideration and passage, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot said a Chairperson could not be appointed even after several attempts since 2012 as a suitable candidate meeting the stringent selection criteria could not be found.

Gehlot said the amendments will ease the procedure related to appointment of a Chairperson.

"The Chairperson will have a three-year term now and the selection process for his successor will be initiated six months before his tenure ends and completed before he retires," said the minister.

With the protests continuing, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said let there be an agreement that action will be taken against those who come to the Well.

"Anybody coming to the Well action will be taken instantly," Naidu said.

As the protests continued, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Goel said: "This Bill is for the disabled and there is a consensus among all parties. I am requesting all parties to pass it".

The Bill was passed in the Upper House shortly before the House adjourned for the day.

Jaunpur (UP), Sep 20: Rajya Sabha member Amar Singh targeted Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav and alleged that he had "deceived" all those who were close to him.

Talking to reporters here Wednesday evening, the Independent MP, who was once an SP leader, said, "There is no one who has not been deceived by Akhilesh...It is in his nature to hurt people."

Alleging that the Samajwadi Party was pursuing politics of appeasement, Singh also lashed out at party MP Ram Gopal Yadav, a confidant of Akhilesh Yadav.

Recalling his contribution in Akhilesh Yadav's life, Singh said that he had gone to Australia for his education, got him party ticket and made him president.

Reiterating his charges against senior SP leader Azam Khan, the Rajya Sabha MP said that party was patronising a person who had a "wrong mindset" and makes indecent comments.

"Azam Khan has made indecent comments against my wife and daughters and a CD recording his remarks has been handed over to Governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath...I am awaiting for action against him..if it is not done from here I will lodge an FIR in Delhi. I have confidence that the Narendra Modi-led government will do justice with me," Amar Singh added. (PTI)

New Delhi, Aug 8: The Shiv Sena, an estranged ally of the BJP, will back the NDA candidate for the election to the post of the Rajya Sabha's deputy chairman, the party said today.

The NDA has fielded Harivansh Narayan Singh of the JD(U) for the August 9 election.

"We will back the NDA candidate," said Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai.

The Shiv Sena had abstained from voting on the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha moved by the Opposition last month against the Modi government. (PTI)

New Delhi, Aug 8: Congress MP B K Hariprasad will be the opposition's candidate for the post of Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson, sources said today.

Several opposition parties, who have joined hands against the BJP, decided to field a joint candidate to take on the NDA nominee, Harivansh Narayan Singh of the JD(U), for the August 9 election.

Today is the last date for filing of nominations.

Sixty-four-year-old Hariprasad is a Congress member of Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

The Congress decided to field its nominee as the joint opposition candidate after the other parties in the opposition bloc chose not to nominate their members. (PTI)

New Delhi, Aug 7: Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu today chided members for the thin attendance in the House when a crucial legislation to provide constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes was passed last evening.

At the start of the day's proceedings, Naidu observed that 156 members were present when the Rajya Sabha passed the constitution amendment bill.

"We just scraped through," he lamented.

Rajya Sabha has a total strength of 245. Majority of the members, that is more than half, are required to be present when an amendment to the Constitution is passed. It can be passed only when two-thirds of the members are present and vote in favour.

"Yesterday, we passed a historic bill unanimously," he said and went on to make his point.

"What is the total presence in the House? 156. What is the strength of the House? On such a constitution amendment where there is unanimity, where there is consensus, and we just scrape through," he said citing the rule on passage of a constitution amendment bill.

The bill could have fallen if the numbers were a little less.

"We were exactly a little above the mark, that's all.

Otherwise, you can't get it approved also," he said.

He said on such matters, political parties should issue whips to their members to ensure their presence.

"On such matters, parties also through their whips (leaders) must see to it that members are cautioned, or guided or directed to be there on time and also vote in such things," he said.

Naidu said it would be a "sad commentary" on the functioning of the Rajya Sabha if someone was to take note of the attendance.

"Whenever there is an important legislation in Parliament, better be present in the House in large numbers, so that a message goes to the society," he said.

He also asked members to be punctual and assemble in the House before the start of the day's proceedings at 1100 hours.

"I have been seeing that members are coming after the Chairman comes and the House assembles," he said.

"The practice is that everybody should be there in the seat before the Chairman comes and then we must start. That will send a good message."

Observing that arriving five minutes early would not make much of a difference, he said when members come in late, they also disturb others to reach their allocated seat.

"All these things can be avoided. This will enhance the prestige and decorum of the House," he said.

Naidu also asked ministers to give advance notice of leave of absence when papers listed against their name are to be taken up.

"I will not allow any statement made by any minister on behalf of other ministers unless I get notice beforehand and then I permit it," he said.

While there has been some improvement, but still some people at the last moment approach the Table office and the Secretariat for allowing someone else to lay the papers on their behalf.

"This is not permissible. This is the last day. I am not going to allow it at all. Please take note of it," he added. (PTI)

Hyderabad, Aug 7: JD(U) president Nitish Kumar today reached out to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, requesting the support of TRS for his party lawmaker and NDA candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh in the election to the post of Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

The Bihar chief minister rang up the Telangana Rashtra Samithi president this morning and made the request, according to Rao's office.

Rao told him he would discuss the issue with his party colleagues and take a final decision, it said.

Kumar's call comes as the NDA and the Opposition appeared to be heading for a showdown in the election. The Opposition has given a clear indication that it will contest the August 9 election.

In the upper house, the BJP-led ruling alliance lacks a majority.

According to Opposition sources, Tiruchi Siva of DMK, Vandana Chavan of NCP and nominated member K T S Tulsi are front-runners for the post.

The support of regional parties such as the AIADMK, BJD, TRS and YSR Congress are crucial in the poll.

The post of the deputy chairman has been lying vacant since June this year, following the retirement of P J Kurien, who had been elected to the upper house of Parliament on a Congress ticket from Kerala.

The current strength of Rajya Sabha is 244 and support of 123 members would be needed for a win in the full house.

The BJP is the largest party in the house with 73 members. Its allies JD(U), Shiv Sena, Akali Dal have six, three and three members, respectively.

Besides the nominated and independent members affiliated to it, the BJP is banking on the support of 13, nine, six and two members of the AIADMK, BJD, TRS, YSR Congress respectively, its floor managers said.

If all four parties support the NDA candidate, then the numbers add up to 126.

However, if parties like BJD or TRS abstain from voting, then things will become more precarious for the ruling alliance.

Both these parties had abstained during a vote on the recent motion of no-confidence against the government in the Lok Sabha while the AIADMK had voted with the treasury benches.

The BJP is hoping to get support of four of the six independent members and three of the four nominated members.

Silchar (Assam), Aug 3: Six of the eight-member Trinamool Congress delegation left Assam this morning after overnight detention at Silchar airport, an official said.

Two others -- MPs Mamatabala Thakur and Arpita Ghosh -- would leave the state later in the day, Cachar district Deputy Commissioner S Lakshmanan said.

"We are going back. The police have not allowed us to go out. We requested them several times but they refused. We spent the night in three rooms at the airport," Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, who was among those detained, said.

Besides Roy, MPs Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Ratna De Nag and Nadimul Haque, West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim and MLA Mohua Maitra were in the delegation.

They were sent by there by TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to assess the situation in Assam post-NRC.

After they landed at the airport yesterday afternoon, they were stopped and taken under preventive detention.

Banerjee had accused the BJP of imposing "super emergency" in the country. (PTI)

Chennai, Aug 2 : The ruling AIADMK today "relieved" its Rajya Sabha MP A Vijaykumar from a key party post in Kanyakumari and announced bifurcation of the local unit for administrative reasons.

Party Coordinator O Panneerselvam and Joint Coordinator K Palaniswami said Vijaykumar was being "relieved from the post of Kanyakumari (AIADMK) district secretary," but did not assign any reason for the change.

Considering administrative convenience, the party's Kanyakumari district unit was now being bifurcated as Kanyakumari East and West, each covering three Assembly segments.

S A Asokan was being appointed Secretary of Kanyakumari East while D Johnthangam will handle the West Unit, they said in a statement and urged the local functionaries to extend their cooperation to the new office-bearers.

A District Secretary plays a key role in the organisational setup of a Dravidian party in Tamil Nadu.

Incidentally, AIADMK has no representation in the current Assembly from all the six Assembly constituencies coming under Kanyakumari. All of them are either represented by Opposition DMK or Congress.

Further, the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha segment is also represented by the lone BJP MP in Tamil Nadu, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan.    PTI

New Delhi, Jul 30: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day following an uproar by the opposition, especially the Trinamool Congress and the Samajwadi Party over the publication of Assam's National Register of Citizens.

The Upper House witnessed three adjournmments earlier in the day due to the continued uproar over the issue before the Chair called it a day at 2:13 pm.

When the House reconvened at 2 pm after the last adjournment, TMC leader Derek O'Brien of Trinamool Congress stood up demanding a discussion on the notice given by him on the NRC.

However, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said he had taken the initiative earlier in the day and even called Home Minister Rajnath Singh to the House to respond on the issue, but the House was not in order.

"Home Minister came all the way to the House, neither the members were willing to say anything, nor did they allow the House to function," Naidu said, adjourning the Rajya Sabha for ten minutes.

When the House reconvened at 2:11 pm, O'Brien again demanded a discussion on the issue under Rule 267.

"It is not a political issue sir. It is a question of human rights, it is a humanitarian issue, it is a national issue, ... we need to look after Indian citizens. Please allow me to raise this issue sir," he said.

However, Naidu reiterated that he had called the Home Minister to the House earlier in the day for a discussion, but the House was not in order and hence the opportunity could not be utilised.

"I assure you I will give the first opportunity tomorrow morning in the beginning of session itself," Naidu said.

However, O'Brien was unrelenting and, with other TMC members joining him in raising the issue, forced Naidu to adjourn the House for the day.

Out of 3.29 crore applicants, 2.89 crore have been found eligible for inclusion in the complete draft of NRC, that was released in Guwahati this morning. This meant that the names of 40.07 lakh have been left out.

When the House had assembled for the day and listed papers were laid after mourning the death of former member N Thangaraj Pandian, TMC members led by their leader Derek O'Brien were up on their feet raising the issue.

SP members and some from the Congress too started raising the issue leading to a din.

Naidu first said he had not received any notice and later said that some members had met him and expressed their desire to raise the NRC issue. As the din continued, he adjourned the House till noon.

When it reconvened, the opposition members, especially Congress, TMC and Samajwadi Party, were on their feet to raise the issue again.

But Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu did not allow them and adjourned the proceedings for the second time till 2 pm.

Later, O'Brien told reporters that TMC has decided to circulate a note on NRC among other political parties.

"We think the NRC is inhumsn and violates human rights.

We would circulate a note on it among all political parties," he said.

Alleging that the government did not consult West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on the issue, the TMC leader said that a delegation of TMC MPs would soon visit Assam. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jul 26: The HRD Ministry had received 30 complaints from across the country regarding poor quality of mid-day meals during past three years and 887 students were reported ill after having those meals during the period, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

The information was shared by Union Minister of State for HRD, Upendra Kushwaha, in response to a written question in Rajya Sabha.

"A total number of 30 complaints from 15 states and union territories including Delhi regarding poor quality of serving of mid day meal have been reported during the last three years. A total number of 887 children were reported ill after having the meals in the country during the period," Kushwaha said.

"To address the issue, the government has issued guidelines on quality, safety and hygiene in school level kitchen to all states and UTs. These guidelines provide for instructions to schools to procure Agmark quality and branded items for preparation of mid-day meals, tasting of meals by 2-3 adult members of school management committee before serving to children," he added.

The HRD Minister further said the government has also adopted an elaborate monitoring mechanism at central, state and district levels to ensure quality food is served to children under the scheme.

According to statistics, maximum number of children, (259), were reported to be ill after consuming mid-day meals in Jharkhand followed by Maharashtra (201) and Uttar Pradesh (154). (PTI)

New Delhi, July 26: The House of Elders today paid tributes to brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the country on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

The day marks the victory of Indian forces over Pakistan in the hills of Kargil and the success of India's Operation Vijay in 1999.

As the Rajya Sabha met for the day, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu paid tributes on the occasion of the 19th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

He recalled that on this day the brave soldiers with their valour, courage and sacrifice recaptured Kargil Heights resulting in a spectacular victory for the country.

"Today, on behalf of the whole House and on my own behalf, I pay glowing tributes to our brave soldiers who faced extreme conditions and difficult situation to defend our country to secure our lives.

"We pay our respect to memories of the brave soldiers who laid down lives in the defence of our country," the Chairman said. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jul 25: Opposition members today expressed anguish in the Rajya Sabha over the increasing cases of cases of sexual abuse against women in the country, blaming the law enforcement agencies of not doing their job properly.

"I am so embarassed to stand every second day and talk about (women) security," Jaya Bachchan of the Samajwadi Party said during the Zero Hour after Congress member Kumari Selja raised the issue.

The SP member stressed that she would continue to raise the issue of women's security regularly.

Raising the issue of crime against women, the Congress MP said the law enforcing agencies were not doing their work properly, despite strict laws.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu too said that "political will and administrative skill" were required to "go for the kill of the social evil".

He stressed everyone should work together to address the menace.

In his Zero Hour mention, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh narrated his experience after his 'Narmada Parikarma" and spoke about the worsening situation of the river.

He said the water flow and level in the river has declined due to deforestation and unauthorised sand mining in the catchment area, while making several suggestions for the restoration of the river.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar (BJP) stressed the need for a review of environmental regulators and said that lakes were dying in Bengaluru due to the apathy of the state government.

He said the only option recourse left with people was the National Green Tribunal and said the state environment regulators should be "functional".

Raising the issue of the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, Congress member Sanjay Sinh alleged that there has been discrimination against non- Assamese and people were being illegally detained.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju promptly denied the allegations.

TMC member Derek O'Brien said that under the 2013 Companies Act, firms could contribute two per cent of their profits (three-year average annual profit) towards the Prime Minister Relief Fund as part of corporate social responsibility, but cannot contribute to the Chief Minister's relief fund.

"Why not to 29 Chief Ministers' relief funds," he wondered and said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to the Prime Minister in this regard. (PTI)

New Delhi, July 24: The Reserve Bank has "wide-ranging and comprehensive" powers to address various situations in banks, the government said today against the backdrop of RBI Governor seeking greater say in dealing with bad loans of public sector banks (PSBs).

Listing out RBI's powers to deal with banks, Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla said the central bank can inspect the lenders, examine on oath any officer, direct special audit and give directions to banks.

Also, whole-time directors of nationalised banks and State Bank of India are appointed in consultation with the RBI, he said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

"...the powers of RBI are wide-ranging and comprehensive to deal with various situations that may emerge in all banks, including public sector banks," he said.

RBI Governor Urjit Patel in his presentation before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance had last week pitched for more powers saying that the central bank has "inadequate" control over state-owned lenders.

Replying to another question on whether less money was being put in ATMs after the demonetisation, Shukla replied in negative.

RBI has informed that the total amount of Notes in Circulation (NIC) as on July 18, 2018 was Rs 19.28 lakh crore as compared to Rs 17.74 lakh crore as on November 4, 2016, he said.

"RBI has ensured adequate supply of notes to meet the cash requirement of public and the currency supply is monitored continuously to ensure distribution of adequate currency to various parts of the country," he said.

The government, he added, has requested all banks to efficiently manage the cash to ensure that adequate cash is available for ATMs and people do not face any problems. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jul 24: Monkey menace has now struck the official residence of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.

Ram Kumar Kashyap of the Indian National Lok Dal raised the issue of monkey menace in the national capital through a zero hour mention in the Rajya Sabha.

He said monkeys uproot plants as well as carry away clothes left out for drying.

A Member of Parliament was delayed for a committee meeting as he was attacked by monkeys, he said asking the government to find a solution to the problem.

Naidu, who is the Chairman of the Upper House, said even the official residence of the Vice President of India is facing monkey menace.

"Hope Maneka Gandhi is not there," he remarked in a lighter vein referring to animal rights activists and Union Minister.

"Some solution has to be found about monkey menace in Delhi," he told Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jul 24: The lynching of a Muslim man on the suspicion of cow smuggling in Rajasthan's Alwar district was today raised in the Rajya Sabha, with the opposition TMC demanding an a law to prevent killings by vigilantes.

Raising the issue through a zero hour mention, Shanta Chhetri of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) cited media reports to say that "88 precious lives have been lost (in lynching incidents) since this government came to power."

Noting that the Supreme Court had last week asked for a law banning mob lynching, she asked what the government has done to check such incidents.

She wanted to know the steps initiated to check such attacks and the government action on framing the anti-lynching law.

She found support in several opposition parties, whose members rose their hands to 'associate' themselves with the issue raised.

A group of men on Saturday thrashed 28-year-old Akbar to death in Alwar district on suspicion of cow smuggling. In the same district in April last year, Pehlu Khan, a cattle farmer was lynched by a mob as he rode home from a market with two cows and two calves in the back of his truck.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu hoped the government will take note of the issue raised. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jul 23: The opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) today forced a pre-noon adjournment of proceedings in the Rajya Sabha after its members trooped into the well of the House over their demand for special category status for Andhra Pradesh.

TDP members led by their leaders Y S Chowdary and C M Ramesh were up on their feet as soon as listed papers were laid on the table of the House.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said their notice has been converted into a short duration discussion which would be taken up tomorrow.

He then got two zero hour mentions -- minimum support price (MSP) for paddy raised by Vijila Sathyanath of the AIADMK and alleged misuse of investigating agencies by the government to settle political vendetta by Anand Sharma of Congress -- made before TDP members rushed into the well of the House.

Naidu said he was willing for a discussion on the issue last week itself but TDP leaders wanted it to be slated for Monday and yesterday they sought its listing on July 24.

"I have admitted the notice under rule 176," he said.

Rule 176 allows a short duration discussion to be raised by a member on a matter of urgent public importance.

But the TDP members were unrelenting.

"Please don't do injustice to other members," Naidu said, adding he has admitted 15 zero hour notices which should be taken up. "I am ready for discussion."

He asked members to return to their places but TDP members were unrelenting.

There also was a minor verbal clash between opposition Congress and treasury benches on Anand Sharma's zero hour mention of parallel FIRs on the same alleged offence being registered by the CBI, the DRI and the ED in "targeted vendetta".

While treasury benches said Congress was trying to "demoralise" investigating agencies, opposition members saw them being "abused" by the government.

Naidu's repeated pleas to members to return to their seats went heeded, forcing him to adjourn the proceedings till 1200 hours.

But before doing so he remarked that it seems that members do not want the House to function. (PTI)

New Delhi, July 20: Indian Railways will have 100 per cent bio toilets by next year that will make tracks safe and eliminate defacation on the rail lines, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said today.

He said that bio toilets was one of the most successful stories of the Railways as 60 per cent of the coaches have already been fitted with it so far.

"The toilets on the entire rail netwok, whether passenger trains, express, Duronto, Rajdhani or unreserved ones, will be replaced with bio toilets. We have already completed alomost 60 per cent of the coaches.

"The work on the balance is going on expeditiously and by next year, it will be 100 per cent bio toilets in the railways," the Minister said.

He said this will completely eliminate defacation on the tracks, which is not only unhygenic but affects rail safety because the uric acid damages them, causing accidents.

"The Railways proposed to complete the work of installation of bio-toilets in balance coaches in 2019. An outlay of Rs 1,220 crore has been provided for completion of this work," Goyal said during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha.

He said work was on to retro-fit additional vaccum- assisted flushing units in these toilets, which have been developed with the help of the DRDO under the 'Make In India' drive instead of importing them. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jul 19: The effective strength of Lok Sabha has reduced to 533 with two more seats falling vacant, sources in Parliament said today, after Speaker Sumitra Mahajan accepted BJD MP Baijayant Jay Panda's resignation and Jose K Mani of Kerala Congress (M) was nominated to Rajya Sabha.

Mani quit the lower house after being nominated to Rajya Sabha.

The developments come as Parliament is set to take up tomorrow the Opposition sponsored no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government.

Ten seats are lying vacant and therefore the majority mark in the house now stands at 266.

Panda, who represented the Kendrapara constituency in Odisha, had resigned on June 12. He met Mahajan yesterday and requested her to accept his resignation.

Later he tweeted about his meeting with the Speaker.

In January this year, the parliamentarian was suspended from the Biju Janata Dal for alleged anti-party activities.

The Lok Sabha will tomorrow debate and vote on the no-confidence motion against the Modi government - the first since the BJP-led NDA came to power four years ago - after the Speaker admitted their notices.

The no-trust motion in Parliament that was moved and accepted by Speaker Mahajan for the first time in 15 years, however, does not pose a threat to the government as the NDA enjoys a comfortable majority. (PTI)

New Delhi, July 18: The government today said in the Rajya Sabha that it will come out with unemployment data from 2016 in the next two months and asserted that various schemes are being implemented with an aim to create more jobs.

Job opportunities have not come down in the country and even global data shows that unemployment rate in India is lower, Minister of Labour and Employment Santosh Kumar Gangwar said during the Question Hour.

"The data is not available for unemployed persons since November 2016. We are conducting a survey. We will come out with a report in the next two months," the minister said.

The Labour Bureau has been conducting quarterly employment surveys in selected labour-intensive and export oriented sectors, he said.

The coverage of the quarterly employment survey has since been enhanced during 2016 with more industries/sectors, he added.

Maintaining that employment generation and improving employability is the priority concern of the government, the minister said various steps have been taken to generate jobs.

The government is encouraging private sector to generate jobs, fast-tracking various projects involving substantial investment and increasing public expenditure on schemes like Pradhan Mantri Emloyment Generation Programme (PMEG) and MGREGS among others, he said.

Also, the skill certification scheme is being launched to enable a large number of Indian youth to take up industry- relevant skill training that will help them in securing a better livelihood, he added. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jul 3: BJP Rajya Sabha member from Uttarakhand Anil Baluni has said he would spend his MPLAD fund on the construction of two to three intensive care units (ICUs) in the hilly districts of his state every year.

The MP's statement came yesterday after 48 people were killed in a bus accident in Uttarakhand's Pauri district on Sunday.

Baluni, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, said he had spoken to the state's chief minister, Trivendra Singh Rawat, and its health department's director general, and he would release the money for this year after estimates are prepared.

Every MP receives Rs 5 crore per year for undertaking development works in his area.

Expressing his deep anguish over the accident, Baluni said in a statement that many critically injured people in the hilly and remote regions of the state often die due to the lack of proper treatment in time as it takes time to transport them to more advanced health facilities.

The Pauri accident had forced him to think over this grim issue, Baluni, who is also his party's media head, said.

"I have decided that I will make money available from my MP fund for constructing two to three ICUs in the hilly districts every year," he said. (PTI)
