New Delhi, Mar 5: Amid efforts by BJP chief Amit Shah to broker peace and "solution" to
the grievances of the ally Telegu Desam Party (TDP), the members of Parliament
from the NDA constituent sought to mount pressure on the Centre on Monday
demanding favourable response to their demands.
TDP MPs submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra
Modi demanding among other things that there should be a "special
assistance at 90:10 ratio" for externally aided projects as well as the
centrally sponsored schemes as being given to the Special Category states.
This amount comes to Rs 20,010 crore as assistance from the Centre, a TDP source said adding the party also wants that the state government be also "permitted" to clear other outstanding loans towards small savings, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development and Employee Assistance Programmes.
Asked to comment on the political developments, TDP Parliamentary Party leader Y S Chowdary told: "We are still part of NDA and it is in the democratic spirit that we are making our demands....It is wrong to say since BJP-TDP came together Andhra Pradesh did not get any benefits. We got some, for the rest of the issues, we want things to be expedited.
"Some of the issues have complexity and need to be looked into urgently," he said referring to matters related to pending steel projects and debt relief.
"The hardships for the people of Andhra Pradesh came mainly due to the unscientific, irrational and arbitrary attitude of the then United Progressive Alliance government," another TDP MP said adding the state of Andhra Pradesh was left "without a capital on account of bifurcation.'
Mr Chowdary clarified that TDP raising the developmental issues concerning the state of Andhra Pradesh has nothing to do with perceived perception that the state unit of BJP was trying to come together with Yuva Sharmik Ryuthu Congress Party led by YS Jaganmohan Reddy.
"What you all are talking has nothing to do with TDP's political and parliamentary strategy....BJP can have one wife, two wives and even more. Even in the past the Congress party maintained working relations with both Samajwadi Party and BSP. We are only concerned about our state," he said.
Mr Chowdary further said the issues of electoral politics, parliamentary strategies and the government to government relations should be considered "separately and distinctly" different from each other.
Mr Amit Shah, meanwhile, has called TDP chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and tried to reach out to the disgruntled ally. Both the leaders held telephonic conversation and agreed to discuss on issues, BJP sources said.
According to the sources, a delegation of TDP leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister Y Ramakrishnudu and Mr Y S Chowdary will meet Mr Shah in the evening on Monday.
The development comes amid TDP members in both Houses of Parliament mounting pressure on the Central government to grant special status to Andhra Pradesh. UNI
