New Delhi, Mar 6: Amid stalemate in relations between BJP and its ally Telugu Desam Party (TDP),
Chittoor MP Naramali Sivaprasad has sought to caution the BJP central
leadership and Prime Minister Narendra Modi that it may not be advisable to
play with the emotions of the people of Andhra Pradesh.
Mr Sivaprasad, who posed as Lord Krishna and played flute in
Lok Sabha on Monday, told: "I posed as Lord Krishna not just for a
photo opportunity. Lord Krishna was the best messenger epic Mahabharata had
known. He had cautioned Kauravas against destruction and sought only five
villages for Pandavas, rest of the story is known to all".
He said, "I had cautioned the then Congress president Sonia Gandhi in 2011-12 itself that she should not allow her people to play with the emotion of people of Andhra Pradesh, and the Congress has paid a price".
"Similarly, this time, I am again being a messenger of peace and goodness. I want to tell Prime Minister Modi and BJP leadership that the genuine demands of Telugu people should be respected".
Mr Sivaprasad's remarks came after TDP MPs submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding among other things that there should be a "special assistance at 90:10 ratio" for externally aided projects as well as the centrally sponsored schemes as being given to the Special Category states.
This amount comes to Rs 20,010 crore as assistance from the Centre,
The demand for 'Special Category' state for Andhra Pradesh - as a consequence of creation of Telangana - has led TDP-BJP alliance to the brink of breakup even as BJP leaders try to make light of the episode. BJP leader and Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday insisted that the party's communication channels with the ally were on and they do not need media platform to share mutual views.
In fact, the deadlock over TDP's demand for special category status to Andhra Pradesh continued even as TDP delegation led by state Finance Minister Y Ramakrishnudu met Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
The TDP members clarified that their "protest" in both the Houses of Parliament would continue. No business could be transacted in both the Houses on the first day of second part of Budget session on Monday as TDP members - and also members from parties entered the well- raising anti-slogans and displaying placards - like 'Save Andhra Pradesh'.
The TDP also wants that the Centre should bridge Rs 16,000-crore revenue deficit, a demand the centre has assured to look into.
TDP Parliamentary Party leader Y S Chowdary clarified that TDP raising the developmental issues concerning the state of Andhra Pradesh has "nothing to do" with perceived perception that the state unit of BJP was trying to come together with Yuva Sharmik Ryuthu Congress Party (YRSCP) led by YS Jaganmohan Reddy.
"What you all are talking has nothing to do with TDP's political and parliamentary strategy....BJP can have one wife, two wives and even more. Even in the past, the Congress party maintained working relations with both Samajwadi Party and BSP. We are only concerned about our state," he said.
Mr Chowdary further said the issues of electoral politics, parliamentary strategies and the government to government relations should be considered "separately and distinctly" different from each other.
BJP chief Amit Shah has spoken to TDP chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and tried to reach out to the disgruntled ally.
However, reports say, there is a "mood" in a section of TDP to walk out of the alliance with BJP as otherwise the party will
have to deal with "double anti incumbency" in 2019 - one of sharing power in the centre and the other in the state.
A section of TDP MPs on Monday reached out to parties like Trinamool and Biju Janata Dal and sought their support for granting of Special Category status to Andhra Pradesh.
After the elevation of M Venkaiah Naidu as Vice-President, the BJP seems to have no good replacement to establish a good rapport with Chandrababu Naidu. The party leadership is likely to enlist the services of BJP general secretary Ram Madhav, who was otherwise quite busy during last two months for polls in northeast. UNI
