New Delhi, Mar 7: Strongly condemning the vandalisation of Periyar's statue in Vellore, Tamil
Nadu, the Congress on Wednesday said the damage to the statue of the leader,
who worked to secure social justice for the Dalits and the underprivileged, was
an insult not just for Tamil Nadu but the whole country.
Talking to reporters here, leader of the
Congress in the Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, said,'workers of the BJP are
indulging in goondaism across the country. Damage to statue of Periyar, who
worked to secure social justice for the Dalits and the underprivileged, is an
insult not just for Tamil Nadu but the whole country."
"We strongly condemn it. Such attacks on the symbols of social reformers like him will not be tolerated,' he added.
Terming incident as reflective of the BJP's intolerance to other ideologies, he said, 'Democracy means space for several ideologies to coexist. However, the BJP has been showing intolerance to views of others. Periyar started a movement in Tamil Nadu to secure social justice for the Dalits and underprivileged," he said.
"Based on this ideology, the DMK was formed. Later, MGR set up AIADMK based on the same ideology. If anyone has contributed to securing social justice to these sections through political power it is Periyar. In this sense, damaging his statue is insult of the poor as he fought for securing social justice for them all his life.'
Kharge alleged that such attacks were part of design by the BJP and RSS to impose their ideology on the country. UNI
