Srinagar, Apr 3: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Tuesday condemned the firing by
security forces in Sub District Hospital (SDH) Shopian in south Kashmir on
Sunday night.
“This act of unspeakable brutality is shocking and unacceptable,” DAK President
Dr Nisar ul Hassan said in a statement issue here on Tuesday.“On Sunday, forces resorted to unprovoked firing in Shopian hospital that worsened the condition of admitted patients and made the working of doctors difficult,” he said.
The DAK President said this happened when doctors and paramedical staff were attending patients, who were injured in Shopain clashes. “It is a wanton disregard to International Humanitarian Law under which medical facilities must be protected in times of war and civil unrest,” he said.
Dr Hassan said there can be no justification for targeting a medical facility at any time. “These are acts of utmost savagery,” he said.
Dr Hassan said these attacks disrupt medical services and endanger care providers at a time when their services are needed most. “Such attacks on crucial life-saving assets during emergencies put lives of sick and wounded at risk,” he added. UNI
