Gold Coast, Apr 12: The
2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Babita on Thursday could not defend her
title and was outclassed by Canada's Diana Weicker in the women’s 53 kg
freestyle wrestling and settled for a silver medal at 21st Commonwealth Games
here.
Babita lost to Diana in a hard-fought final.
Both the wrestlers started slow.
Babita tried to show some good bets, which would give both players a 2-2 equivalent point at a time. But the Canadians dominated Babita, continued to score consecutive points and got the match tied with a 5-2 lead.
Diana won the match with a 5-2 lead in the second round and won gold at the top of the group.
Notably, the 28-year-old Babita had won gold in the 55 kg category in 2014 Glasgow Games and a silver medal at home in the 51 kg category in Delhi Games. UNI
