Bengaluru, Apr 21: Even
as the campaigning for the May 12 Assembly elections in Karnataka is hotting
up, the ruling Congress is asserting that both its main opposition parties, the
BJP and the JD(S) have arrived at a tacit understanding to defeat Congress.
The secular coat of the Janata Dal (S) has been ripped apart
when it joined the BJP to form a government and judging by the manner in both
the parties have approached the current assembly elections, it is quite evident
that the two parties have a secret deal a senior Congress functionary told.
The JDS has been too soft on the BJP during the campaign so far and none of his meetings saw JD(S) State President and party Chief Ministerial candidate H D Kumaraswamy targeting more on the Congress without making any attempt to criticise the Narendra Modi government, let alone the misdeeds of the BJP when it ruled the State. On several issues its slant swung more against the Congress rather than the BJP and similar was the case with the BJP too which had never attempted to brush the BJP on the wrong side,Congress spokesperson and national convenor for communications of AICC Priyanka Chaturvedi said.
Another weapon the two parties are adopting is to name a soft candidate in some of the constituencies to avoid split in opposition votes and ensure the defeat of the Congress in such constituencies. Both the parties were overtime to find a suitable candidate and waited for the Congress to come out with its comprehensive list before the could come out with their full list.
The operation to defeat Chief Minister Siddaramaiah came out in the open when the BJP nominated a soft candidate Gopal Rao against Mr Siddaramaiah in Chamundeshwari. Though not a rank outsider, Mr Rao is fighting his first assembly election and is said to be a RSS functionary, according to a congress local leader in Mysuru.
Ms Chaturvedi said the hidden agenda of the BJP was to project Mr B S Yeddyurappa as the front of the party election strategy, but later on change him with another leader who was a core Hindutva leader. But the BJP has not realised that the people of Karnataka would not allow such tactics to work.
Even in the campaign style howsoever Prime Minister Narendra Modi attempted to raise applause from the audience through his remarks, he has not been able to build a personal touch with the people and this is more important. In this Congress President Rahul Gandhi had made an impact, she claimed.
She said BJP President Amit Shah had been repeatedly bringing to the fore old issues and misleading the people with lies. The Party has not been able to come out with a proof or documentary evidence on corruption charges, though for public consumption it had called the Siddaramaiah government a ten per cent government, she said.
She was confident that the party would come out with a clear majority and ruled out a hung assembly. UNI
