JAMMU,
MAY 23: JTGC has become quite a hot-spot for golfers
from across India and abroad. After Shubhankar Sharma, JTGC witnessed presence
of another golfing legend, Ali Sher and welcomed him to the beautiful lush
green 18-hole golf course located at Sidhra.
Ali
Sher’s journey to the top echelons of Indian golf is the proverbial
rags-to-riches story. Starting as a caddie at the Delhi Golf Club, Sher went on
to make it big in the sport. In 1991, Sher became the first Indian professional
ever to break the foreign stronghold by winning the much coveted Indian Open
title following which Sher was conferred with Arjuna award in the same year.
Sher’s Indian Open victory was indeed a seminal moment for golf in India and
the tonic Indian golfers were looking for. Ali Sher repeated the magic in 1993,
when he beat Feroz Ali by just one stroke. Sher’s stunning victory opened the
floodgates for a new breed of talented golfers and he was honoured with many
club memberships including honorary membership of the Delhi Golf Club.
While his visit at JTGC, Sher interacted with Manav Gupta,
Secretary, JTGC and other reputed golfers and his tips and guidance regarding
golfing were admired by budding golfers of J&K State. Sher was impressed
with the panoramic 18 hole golf course and praised the efforts of management in
its up-keep.
