New Delhi, May 18: The BJP on Friday welcomed Congress party's immediate reactions to the
Supreme Court's orders on the Karnataka political imbroglio and hoped that in future too the grand old party should show similar respect to the highest court of the land.
"The Congress reactions to Supreme Court is based on selectivism .....this will not work in favour of democracy.....It is good that they have welcomed the Supreme Court orders today. We hope in future also the Congress party will show similar respect for the Supreme Court," BJP spokesman Sambit Patra told reporters.
He said it is the same Congress party which once on getting a non-favourble verdict on the death of Justice B H Loya had moved a petition for impeachment of Chief Justice of India Justice Dipak Misra.
He singled out that none other than Congress president Rahul Gandhi had time and again tried to belittle the Supreme Court and had made personal attack on the judges of the apex court.
"Mitha Mitha gab gab, karua karua thutu (You cannot have a situation wherein any thing favourable to you is welcomed and things otherwise will be slammed)," Mr Patra said trying to charge Congress party with maintaining a crystal clear "double standards" on its position vis-a-vis Supreme Court.
Earlier in the day Congress leaders were jubilant on the apex court's ruling that trial of strength in Karnataka should take place on Saturday at 1600 hrs while the state Governor Vajubhai Vala had given 15 days time to new Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to prove his numbers.
Citing media reports, the BJP spokesman claimed till the final results of Karnataka polls had come on May 15 even the Congress party had presumed that it will emerge single largest party and hence had even "drafted" a petition for the Supreme Court to allow 'single largest party' to form government.
"This petition prepared by Abhishekhmanu Singhvi had to be further altered as in quick turn of events BJP emerged single largest and JD(S) and Congress came together to offer an alternative arrangement," he claimed.
The BJP spokesman said this was like "constructing a constitution according to your own wish".
In Manipur, Meghalaya and Goa the Congress party though emerged single largest party, it was denied opportunity to form governments in those states as BJP cobbled together alliances along with
regional parties and Independents.
"This is the Constitution of India and thus it cannot be flexible according to whims and fancies of one leader or one political family," Mr Patra said in an obvious reference to Mr Gandhi.
He also said it was equally painful that Mr Gandhi had on Thursday - within hours Supreme Court gave a late night hearing on Congress petition on Karnataka political developments - had compared the situation in India with that in Pakistan.
He said the Congress president has developed a sense of 'entitlement' - that things should move according to his or his party's interests - but such a thing cannot work in India. UNI
