Kakdwip (WB), Sep 24: An under-construction bridge collapsed in Kakdwip area of South 24 Parganas district on Monday, a senior official said.

There has been no report of any casualty, South 24 Parganas district magistrate Y. Ratnakara Rao said.

"The incident happened on Monday morning. We are waiting for further details," the district magistrate said.

A team has been rushed to the spot to look into the incident, he said.

This is the third incident of bridge collapse in the state in September.

Majerhat Bridge in south Kolkata had collapsed on September 4, killing three persons and injuring 24.

On September 7, an old bridge had collapsed near Siliguri in north Bengal leaving a truck driver injured.

Siliguri (WB), Sep 7: A bridge collapsed near Siliguri in Darjeeling district Friday morning, injuring a truck driver, West Bengal Minister Rabindranath Ghosh said.

The truck, which was crossing the bridge, is still hanging from the broken portion of the structure that connects Manganj area to Siliguri, a major city in north Bengal.

The truck driver has been rushed to hospital.

This is the second bridge collapse incident in West Bengal this week. A portion of the Majerhat Bridge on an arterial road in Kolkata collapsed on September 4.

Kolkata, Sep 6: Closure of a part of arterial Diamond Harbour Road owing to collapse of a section of Majerhat bridge caused huge traffic snarls since morning on Thursday, leading to delays and frayed nerves of commuters.

Police said apart from diversion of traffic owing to the collapse, a political programme at Esplanade in the heart of the city and another at Howrah bridge also affected traffic movement in the city during the day.

Long queues of vehicles were seen in many roads in the southern and western parts of the city, as also in the Kolkata-bound stretch of Kona Expressway connecting national highways to Mumbai and Delhi.

People going to work, schools and colleges were stuck in public and private vehicles, which took more than double the time taken usually to reach their destinations.

Traffic were at a standstill or moving at a snail's pace on roads through which these were diverted owing to the closure of DH Road at Majerhat area.

Sahapur Road, Hide Road, Alipore Road and many other avenues connecting the south-western parts of the city and vast areas of South 24 Parganas district took most of the diverted traffic load, police said.

The Kona Expressway connecting national highways 6 (Mumbai Road) and 2 (Delhi Road) with the city through Vidyasagar Setu over the river Hooghly was also crammed with heavy goods vehicles which were entering the city's port and trading hubs through the night.

With goods traffic entry to port and other places in the south having been restricted since Tuesday's bridge collapse, a huge number of heavy vehicles were entering the city last night leading to the jam, police said.

A political programme at Esplanade that was attended by hundreds of people coming from districts and a protest programme on high petrol and diesel prices by the Congress on Howrah bridge also affected traffic movement in the city, police said.

"It takes an hour for me to reach the IT hub at Salt Lake Sector V where I work from my residence at Behala, but now it is taking nearly double the time," said Subho Ganguly, a commuter.

A student who used to reach his school at Kidderpore in just over 15 minutes from Behala, the worst affected area in south-west Kolkata owing to the bridge collapse, Thursday reached in nearly an hour, his father Kallol Nag said.

"It is going to be a nightmare for people living in Behala with the Durga Puja approaching," said Ratri Banerjee, a school teacher who resides at Sakherbazar area of Behala.

Traffic restrictions are imposed to ensure smooth movement of vehicles during the Durga Puja when a large number of people came on the road for pandal hopping.

Kolkata, Sep 6: One more body was recovered Thursday from the debris of the collapsed Majerhat Bridge in southern part of the city, taking the toll in the incident to three, a police official said.

The body was identified as that of Goutam Mondal (45), a labourer hailing from Murshidabad district, who was missing along with another labourer Pranab Dey since the accident on Tuesday, he said.

Mondal was working as a cook in the extension of the Metro rail project going on adjacent to the Majerhat Bridge, he said.

The area near the site had been dug up for the project and construction material is strewn all over the place.

The other deceased, whose body was recovered Wednesday was identified as Soumen Bag.

Of the 24 injured, 11 were discharged Wednesday and 13 are currently under treatment in different hospitals, he said.

After Mondal's body was found, NDRF personnel left the spot, while State Disaster Management Department personnel continued their rescue work at the accident site with cranes, earth movers and drilling machines.

"We are closing our operations as it seems there is nobody stuck inside, an official of the NDRF said.

The state government has constituted a committee under Chief Secretary Malay De to investigate the cause of the collapse.

The bridge in Alipore area runs over the Majerhat Railway station and connects the city centre with the heavily populated Behala, vast areas of the south west suburbs and neighbouring South 24 Parganas district.

With the Diamond Harbour Road being closed and less number of buses plying, thousands of commuters were stuck in huge traffic jams since morning.

"We have diverted vehicles to and from the city through various other roads," an officer of Kolkata Police traffic department said.

The police lodged a suo motu case against unknown persons in connection with their involvement in the collapse.

This is the third bridge collapse in the city since 2013.

An under-construction flyover collapsed in the crowded Burrabazar area, the wholesale business hub of the city, on March 31, 2016, claiming 26 lives.

On March 4, 2013, a road bridge collapsed in Ultadanga area in the northern part of the city. There was no casualty.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who rushed back to the city from Darjeeling Hills Wednesday, will hold an emergency meeting with the PWD and other departments and the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) in connection with collapse of the bridge.

Lucknow, Jul 28: Eight people including seven engineers and a contractor have been arrested in connection with the Varanasi flyover collapse incident in May, which left 15 people dead, Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh said today.

He said action was taken against the eight after collecting "technical proofs" with the help of scientists of Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee (Uttarakhand).

"It was found that there were many shortcomings in the bridge on which the investigating officer quizzed the engineers before arresting them," Singh said.

A probe into the incident found that failure to cast cross beams for locking the girders led to the collapse of a portion of a railway overbridge (ROB) as the structure was left exposed to external forces.

The report of a technical committee, set up by the state government to ascertain the cause of incident and accessed by PTI, also said uninterrupted traffic flow on the busy road was the main reason for generating vibrations that may have led to the collapse.

An FIR was registered against the UP State Bridge Corporation officials, who were working on the site, under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the IPC on May 16, a day after the collapse, following a complaint by the Roadways police outpost in-charge.

The project manager and other officials were suspended and the government also shifted Managing Director of Bridge Corporation Rajan Mittal.

Mittal was removed from his post during the term of the Akhilesh Yadav government following complaints. But he was reinstated when the BJP government came to power last year.
