New Delhi, Jun 17 :  The national capital Monday recorded the lowest temperature for June this year at 33.3 degrees Celsius, as a cloud cover and gusty winds offered a much-needed respite from the sweltering heat.

Light rainfall witnessed over the last two days ended a dry spell of around 20 days during which the mercury soared to as high as 48 degrees Celsius.

Gusty winds and a cloudy sky kept the mercury in check. The city recorded a high of 33.3 degrees Celsius, six notches below normal and the lowest for June this year, and a minimum of 28 degrees Celsius, a MeT official said.

Traces of rainfall were recorded at isolated places. Humidity levels oscillated between 50 and 54 per cent, it said.

Similar weather conditions will prevail in the city for another three-four days. The mercury will hover between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius.

According to private forecaster Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation persists over Haryana and adjoining areas. Also, humid winds from the Arabian Sea are increasing moisture over the northern plains including Delhi.

"This moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea is expected to continue for the next two to three days," it said.                                               [Agencies]

New Delhi: India has recorded the highest number of deaths of children under the age of five in 2015, according to a latest Lancet study which also said that the country performed poorly in terms of tuberculosis and maternal survival.
The Global Burden of Disease study 2015 published in the Lancet which assesses the state of world’s health, said over a million under-five children have died in 2015.
The study said that cardiovascular diseases account for a large and increasing proportion of deaths in India.
“Most countries in the region did better than expected at reducing health loss from strokes (like India, Pakistan) and lower respiratory infections (like Bangladesh, Nepal).
“India performed much worse than expected on tuberculosis, whilst Bangladesh did poorly on drowning. All countries in the region did much worse than expected at reducing deaths in children under-5, with India recording the largest number of under-5 deaths of any country in 2015, at 1.3 million,” it said.
The study said that while Bangladesh has improved maternal survival much faster than expected, India and Nepal have fared poorly.
“In this analysis we have estimated that there were more deaths due to chronic kidney disease than in previous analysis because of improved estimates within countries with large populations such as China, India, and Russia,” it said.
The study found that although life expectancy has risen but seven out of 10 deaths now occur due to non-communicable diseases while headaches, tooth cavities and hearing and vision loss each affect more than 1 in 10 people across the world.
It said that progress has been made on reducing unsafe water and sanitation, but diet, obesity, and drug use are an increasing threat. It also said that more than 2,75,000 women died during pregnancy or childbirth in 2015 across the world.
kejriwal, kejriwal ink attack, ink attack, ink attack kejriwal, arvind kejriwal, india news, bikaner,, aap, aap news, kejriwal newsSince its invention, ink has played a major role in social transformations, giving push to political revolutions, influencing public sentiment against oppressors and tyrants and giving voice to millions among other things. But now it has become a much too frequently used tool to smear individuals – whether crooked or not – as a means of shameless protest or retribution. An unusual turn of events again raised the legitimacy of ink attack protest done by people who advocate just causes but use deplorable means to act for their realisation.Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut were subjected to ink attacks on the same day. This has become a regular incident and one that raises serious questions over the depleting standards of protests and the levels to which people are willing to stoop down under the garb of those protests. On Tuesday night in Bikaner, two youths affiliated to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad threw ink at Kejriwal as a protest over the Delhi CM’s comments on the Indian Army. In Lucknow, a Shiv Sena worker threw ink at MP Sanjay Raut amid clashes between rival factions in the Sena. In fact, this was not the first time Kejriwal faced an ink attack. On 17 January this year, a woman threw ink at Kejriwal after a public address in Delhi over the odd-even scheme’s success.
These incidents closely follow the recent ink attack on Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia who was attacked on September 19 this year outside LG Najeeb Jung’s residence. He was attacked for ‘being unable to handle the Dengue and Chikungunya outbreak in the national Capital’.
In other incidents, independent MLA Engineer Rashid had his face smeared by attackers from the far right group Hindu Sena at the Delhi Press Club for holding a beef party a fortnight earlier. On October 12 last year, Sudheendra Kulkarni, chairman of the Observer Research Foundation Mumbai, was smeared as Shiv Sena activists threw ink at him for organising a book launch in Mumbai for former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri. Kulkarni was a close confidante of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and was also his speech writer. Some of the speeches written by him echoed in Vajpayee’s voice in the ramparts of the United Nations as well. This incident was widely seen as an attack on free speech and Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut, who faced the ink attack himself on Tuesday, had termed the attack as a “silent protest” adding that it was a “mild reaction from Sena. Similar attacks were carried out on Subrata Roy Sahara and NCP chief Sharad Pawar in the past.
