New Delhi, Jun 25 :  A BJP delegation, led by Lok Sabha member SS Ahluwalia, on Tuesday submitted its report to party chief and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on violence in trouble-torn Bhatpara area of West Bengal, and alleged that the local police was acting in a "partisan" manner.

The team, which also included MPs Satyapal Singh and BD Ram, both retired police officers, had visited Bhatpara on Saturday.

Two people were killed and 11 others injured in clashes in the town in North 24 Parganas district on Thursday.

The police fired gun shots at one group, while it only did lathicharge on the other, the former Union Minister alleged.

The delegation, which spoke to a cross-section of people in Bhatpara, claimed that people have lost trust in police.

"People are unable to do their work there as they have lost trust in police. Police either act as mute spectator or are partisan," Ahluwalia told reporters here.

He also said that police tried to prevent the delegation from going to the area and stopped them at the airport as Section 144 of CrPC was imposed.

Ahluwalia said that in the report they have suggested giving financial help to those affected by violence and ensuring education for the children.                       [Agencies]

New Delhi, Oct 3: Delhi Police removed barricades post-midnight to allow the farmers stopped during the Kisan Kranti Padyatra to enter Delhi and proceed towards Kisan Ghat, said a senior police officer.

The farmers entered the national capital riding their tractors and trolleys and proceeded towards Kisan Ghat where heavy police deployment has been made, he added.

Thousands of farmers on Tuesday marched towards Delhi over demands ranging from farm loan waiver to cut in fuel prices, blocking traffic movement on arterial roads leading to the national capital.

National highways leading to the capital were swamped with farmers who came in from places as far as Gonda, Basti and Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh as well as the sugarcane belt of western Uttar Pradesh.

Police picketed the border with Uttar Pradesh, imposing prohibitory orders banning assembly of five or more people and holding of any public meeting, usage of any amplifier, loudspeaker, and similar instruments.

The Kisan Kranti Yatra, which began from Tikait Ghat in Haridwar on September 23, was joined by farmers from various parts of Uttar Pradesh. They came on foot, in buses and tractor trolleys.

They carried banners of Bhartiya Kisan Union, which gave the call for the march to press for a series of demands.

Hyderabad, Aug 2 : Telangana police is now equipped with another 'powerful' tool - 'Facial Recognition System' (FRS) that would help them prevent crime and identify criminals/suspects at lightning speed, a top police official said today.

FRS is an integrated feature of TSCOP mobile app for assisting investigation officers for developing effective and efficient services to citizens and thereby improving responsiveness, State Director General of Police M Mahendar Reddy told reporters here.

The tool allows police to identify potential offenders by comparing a suspect's face with lakhs of digital photographs of people including offenders, wanted and those missing stored in the central database of Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), he said.

The whole process would only take a few seconds, he said adding in case of photographs matching, investigation officers can carry out manual comparison and proceed for further confirmation using other information.

The central database of photographs will be updated regularly through CCTNS implemented in all police stations across the state, Reddy said.

The photographs of people that do not match with the central database would automatically be discarded and shall not be stored anywhere in the system, the DGP said.

The main objective of the app (TSCOP) launched earlier this year is to ensure better collaboration and operational efficiency of the police at all levels in the districts and commissionerates across the state.   PTI

London, Jul 9: A woman exposed to the nerve agent Novichok in southwest England, near where a Russian spy was targeted by the same type of chemical in March, has died, police have said.

Prime Minister Theresa May said she was "appalled and shocked" by the death of Dawn Sturgess, one of two people who fell ill last weekend in Amesbury, near the town of Salisbury yesterday.

"Police and security officials are working urgently to establish the facts of this incident, which is now being investigated as a murder," she said.

She offered her condolences to the relatives and loved ones of Sturgess, 44, who had three children. She became ill alongside a man named locally as Charlie Rowley, 45.

They were believed to have become exposed to Novichok by handling a container, and a link to the Salisbury attack in March is a main line of investigation.

That incident left former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, who was visiting from Russia, in a critical condition although they later recovered.

Britain and its allies blamed Moscow for trying to kill the pair, prompting angry denials that led to an international diplomatic crisis.

Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the head of Britain's counter-terror police, said Sturgess' death was "shocking and tragic news".

"The 45-year-old man who fell ill with Dawn remains critically ill in hospital and our thoughts are with him and his family as well," he said in a statement.

"This terrible news has only served to strengthen our resolve to identify and bring to justice the person or persons responsible for what I can only describe as an outrageous, reckless and barbaric act.

"Detectives will continue with their painstaking and meticulous work to gather all the available evidence so that we can understand how two citizens came to be exposed with such a deadly substance that tragically cost Dawn her life."

Shillong, Jun 27 : Meghalaya is slowly emerging as the transit point for distribution of heroin in the country, a senior police officer has said.

"With Shillong as the transit point, many players, some with militant background or affiliations, are involved in the drug trafficking business to fund their anti-social activities," East Khasi HIlls Superintendent of Police Davis Marak said.

He was addressing an event to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking here yesterday.

The rise in petty crimes in some areas has also been attributed to the growing numbers of drug users, particularly among the youth, who commit such crimes to satiate their cravings, Marak said.

Expressing concern over the fact that most traffickers come from low income families or those with a history of broken homes, the police officer stressed on the need to pay more attention to the youth and urged all stakeholders to work hand in hand with the police to curb the menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The police, in its continued efforts to curb the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, is also organising a week-long awareness programme, beginning this week, in different localities, schools and colleges to create awareness, the SP said.

Earlier, Dr. Arvind Nongpiur, an Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at the NEIGRIHMS said, the use of illicit drugs begins at an early age.

"The inquisitiveness to experiment or succumb to peer pressure often leads adolescents to use drugs thereby preventing them from leading a healthy and productive life," he said.

Stressing that drug abuse is no longer considered just a social problem, Dr. Nongpiur said drug abuse is accepted as an illness and drug addiction can be treated with proper medical intervention.

A recovered drug addict also shared his long journey on the road to recovery.   PTI

Mahila Panthers lead protest against Police Deptt

Jammu, May 26:  Strongly condemning the District Udhampur Police for abusive and filthy language against NPP leaders, causing undue harassment and their victimized besides shielding the criminals involved in attack on Panthers Party leaders including female members, the Mahila Panthers today led a massive protest demonstration outside IGP Headquarters today. The protestors further alleged use of filthy and abusive language by SHO Basantgarh who hurled open threats to Panthers Party workers of arresting them alongwith entire family members. They raised slogans against SSP Udhampur for acting on the dictations of BJP for vested interests. They blocked the road outside IGP Headquarters leading to suspension of vehicular traffic for more than one hour.
Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Manju Singh General Secretary NPP said that some vandals and criminals owing allegiance to BJP had been assigned the charge of physically eliminating the Panthers leaders in which some police officers of District Udhampur had been conniving. She said that apart from attacks on her and her husband several video-graphed threats of physically eliminating Chairman JKNPP had been provided to police which however had refused to take any action against the offenders.
Making a mention of the recent episode of 14-05-2018, Mrs. Manju Singh said that a BJP worker named Mohan Singh addressed a gathering inside the premises of HSS Basantgarh during office hours in the presence of local BJP MLA and SHO Basantgarh where he not only used highly vituperative, offensive and provocative language but threatened that he would have spilled the blood of Panthers Party leaders with their dead bodies squatted on the ground in case the Panthers Chairman did not have PSOs. His video-graphed speech is being widely circulated in social media with police also having the requisite details of the same but the SHO too has colluded and no cognizance taken. The SHO Basantgarh has been arresting NPP workers on fake charges besides threatening them to stop speaking against BJP MLA. The said SHO even hurled threats upon Panthers Chairman saying that he was not an ordinary officer and had links with some top leaders and some ‘other people’. With police officer behaving like vandals and ruffians and using derogatory language with even most respected citizen, the Chief Minister surely owed an explanation for the conduct of the officers of her Home Deptt, said the NPP leaders.
Mrs. Manju Singh further pointed out that the delinquent SHO was shielding the MLA Ramnagar who had assaulted a school teacher inside classroom in HSS Basantgarh alongwith his armed gunmen in June 2017 with 42 students having given statements as eye witnesses accusing the said MLA of having assaulted their teacher infront of their eyes. The said SHO has given a clean chit to the delinquent MLA in return for MLA agreeing to shield him in certain corruption complaints against the Police officer, she divulged.
Mrs. Manju Singh that her husband had been receiving threats of physical elimination from several BJP workers in the past and several notorious characters belonging to BJP had issued threats of killing her husband in open public meetings which were video-graphed and relevant footage provided to police authorities which, however, had refused to take cognizance because of political patronage enjoyed by the offenders. She said that abusive language and filthy comments were also posted by these notorious characters against her and her husband on the social media with a view to cause provocation whose print outs were also provided to the Police authorities for appropriate action which was still awaited. She demanded withdrawal of the frivolous FIR registered against her and Mr. Singh and sought immediate arrest of the criminals and all others involved in the conspiracy. “How Mehbooba led govt could grant immunity to those who assaulted a woman in full public view? Being a woman your silence against the perpetrators challenging the dignity of the women only shows the impuissance of the dispensation you are running. Justice delayed is justice denied”, anguished Manju Singh said. She announced to hold regular protests in case the culprits involved in the dastardly attack on her and her husband were not brought to book and Police officers working under the tutelage of BJP were not removed.
Prominent among those who spoke on the occasion included Mrs. Kesar Parveen Advocate, Renu Singh, Anita Devi, Jyoti Devi, Neeraj Devi, Nisha Devi, Neelam Devi, Krishna Devi Anita Kumari, Rajni Devi, Vaishali Devi, Sunita Devi, Rajesh Padgotra, Sham Gorkha, Gagan Partap Singh, Shanker Singh Chib, Khajoor Singh, Nirmal Kishore, Karnail Singh, Sukhjit Singh, Parshotam Singh, Rashpaul Singh, Mohinder Singh, Arun Khajuria, Shankaar Singh Sanju,Udhayveer Singh, Rohit Sharma, Anil Rackwal, Sansar Chand, Rakesh Verma, Amandeep Singh, Pawandeep Singh, Ajay Sharma, Sunny Singh, Puran Singh, Shaitan Singh besides others.
